Fukushima's Apocalyptic Threat

By Harvey Wasserman, Reader Supported News

RSN Special Coverage: Disaster in Japan

ukushima may be in an apocalyptic downward spiral.

Forget the corporate-induced media coma that says otherwise ... or nothing at all.

Lethal radiation is spewing unabated. Emission levels could seriously escalate. There is no end in sight. The potential is many times worse than Chernobyl.

Containing this disaster may be beyond the abilities of Tokyo Electric or the Japanese government.

There is no reason to incur further unnecessary risk. With all needed resources, it's time for the world's best scientists and engineers to take charge.

Even then the outcome is unclear.

For a brief but terrifying overview, consult Dr. Chris Busby as interviewed by RT/TV.

Fukushima Units One, Two and Three are all in various stages of melting down.

Molten fuel at Unit One may have burned through its reactor pressure vessel, with water poured in to cool it merely pouring out the bottom.

A growing pond of highly radioactive liquid is softening the ground and draining into the ocean.

There is no way to predict where these molten masses of fuel will yet go.

Especially in the event of an aftershock, steam and hydrogen explosions could blow out what's left of the containments.

The extra plutonium in the MOX fuel at Unit Three is an added liability.

At least one spent fuel pool has been on fire.

The site has already suffered at least two hydrogen explosions. Some believe a fission explosion may also have occurred.

All have weakened the structures and support systems on site.

These shocks and the soft ground may be why Unit Four has partially sunk and is tipping, possibly on the brink of collapse. Even a relatively minor aftershock could mean catastrophe.

More explosions are possible. More leaks are virtually certain.

Escalated radiation levels from any one of the reactors could force all workers to evacuate, leaving the entire site to chance.

The New York Times has now reported that critical valve failures that contributed to the Fukushima disaster are likely at numerous US reactors.

Significant radioactive debris has been found thousands of yards from the plant. Radiation levels in Tokyo, nearly 200 miles away, have risen. Fallout has been detected in North America and throughout Europe.

Radiation pouring into the sea has begun to spread worldwide.

There is much more, none of it good.

Japan and Germany have had the good survival sense to abandon future reactor construction, and to shut some existing sites.

But here, the corporate media blackout is virtually complete. Out of sight, out of mind seems the strategy for an industry desperate for federal loan guarantees and continued operation of a rickety fleet of decaying old reactors.

The Obama Administration has ended radiation monitoring of seafood in the Pacific. It does not provide reliable, systematic radiological or medical data on fallout coming to the United States.

But we may all be in unprecedented danger.

A national movement is underway to end atomic give-aways and turn to a green-powered Earth.

Now we must also move ALL the world's governments beyond denial to focus on somehow bringing Fukushima under control.

After two months of all-out effort, four reactors and at least that many spent fuel pools remain at risk.

Our survival depends on stopping Fukushima from further irradiating us all.

The world community has come together to put a new sarcophagus around Chernobyl.

A parallel, more urgent effort now needs to focus on Fukushima.

Whatever technical, scientific and material resources are available to our species, that's what needs to go there.

NOW!!!

Damn right! At the present time much too little is being done, too late! We are experiencing an unmitigated disaster of otherwise untold proportions; and, if something drastic isn't done to truly contain this situation, not only can it get worse, but as it stands now within the next couple of years we will start seeing Americans and Europeans dying from cancer(s) in even more pandemic proportions than we already do! So, God help us if we don't entomb the entire Fukushima site.

NOW!!!

Personally, I think the reason(s) they haven't already begun to do so is that they fully expect more explosions like the one that just happened a week or two ago; and they thus know that, if they built a sarcophagus over the entire site, it would very likely be blown right off of it or blown apart. Therefore, that appears why they are only taking "bandaid" measures right now such as seeking to put tents over the stricken reactors which, though undoubtedly extremely expensive to get done in and of itself, is much less expensive, monetarily at least, if more explosions take place and blow the tents to kingdom come, and much less expensive than if a more "permanent" entombing cover were built over the site and it was blown to kingdom come... (Continued from above.)

I, with disclaimer of not being an expert, that people "don't only take my advice, and that they obtain advice concerning this matter from professionals such as radiation experts, doctors, other medical professionals, etc.", recommend that ALL Americans and Europeans, etc., go outside as little as possible, wear face masks when they do go outside, keep the windows and vents on their homes, offices and their motor vehicles closed tightly, and move themselves back and forth from their vehicles to enclosed buildings, their place(s) of business, and/or their homes as quickly as possible.

[All of this advice is due to the irradiated dust particles, aka now radioactive dust, that is encircling the entire northern hemisphere, and particularly effecting the entirety of North America, right now; and the fact(s) that one of the primary ways that this irradiated dust effects us deleteriously is through its entering our lungs and very likely causing cancer(s) thereafter. So, please, for everyone's sake, take this recommendation seriously and take the necessary precautions accordingly. Please do NOT ignore or put off taking such precautions IMMEDIATELY. This is VERY important... (Continued below.)

+4 # S. Wolf Britain 2011-05-21 10:49
(Continued from above.)

Take all of the above-reference d precautions, no matter how long it takes, until Fukushima is completely covered in a sarcophagus like Chernobyl, if ever; and, if totally proper steps are not taken to properly and fully contain the situation, please continue to take said precautions indefinitely, for the sake of your health and the health of all of your loved ones. This is ABSOLUTELY NO exaggeration WHATSOEVER. Thank you for all of your serious consideration.]

Exactly, "out of sight, out of mind." I've seen not one report in the MSM about further developments at Fukushima. It's as if all is now hunky dory and we should forget that nuclear power plants are dangerous and UNNECESSARY. Is there any doubt in anyone's minds that our politicians and those whom we pay to take care of things aren't doing their jobs? I'm writing just a few hours before it is predicted that the world will come to an end, The Rapture and all. For my time zone, one more minute and I will know. (OOps, I'm still here past my Rapture minute) Could it be that all of our representatives believe in Armageddon, and don't give a good fig as to what is good for us? I THINK SO!

I was four and a half months pregnant and on a trip to Helsinki, Finland when Chernobyl blew in 1986. On my return I was offered an abortion or free medical care in return for becoming a guinea pig. I did not accept either offer.

I do what I can to minimize my lifetime radiation risk. It never goes away, it builds in your body. I have not eaten dairy since the Fukushima disaster and try to track what is happening. The RSN special coverage is the best single source I have found. Beyond Nuclear is also a good source. But in general the news and information have disappeared. The US stopped (publicly) monitoring radiation levels about a month ago, I can no longer get local readings for Northern California. "They" seem to want the general public to believe there is no risk.

When I speak of my concern and my dietary restriction, I receive blank stares in return.

Why do we have a 15 minute attention span? This is important in so many ways. Worldwide health outcomes are just shrugged at.

We need media coverage, over and over. Without knowledge, how can the people act intelligently?

Here are two excellent links, as follows; and there are no doubt MANY helpful sites about what is really transpiring with Fukushima all over the net. On the following links, watch the close correlation between the jet stream and the rise in radiation in the areas where the jet stream is going right over at that same time. I keep track of this on a daily basis and try to time my leaving my apartment to run errands (now only twice a month) when the jet stream is not going right over the area where I live; and especially not to go out when it is snowing or raining, which brings the radioactive particles in the cloud-level atmosphere down right on top of us. Granted, the radiation levels are not at alert levels, but they have doubled or tripled since this disaster started spreading the radioactive dust across North America about a week to ten days after the earthquake(s) and tsunami.

Actually, instead of two links, here's three:

http://www.radiationnetwork.com/index.htm

http://squall.sfsu.edu/gif/jetstream_norhem_00.gif

http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weather/news/fukushima?LANG=en&VAR=euradsfc

They keep updating these sites, so they are very reliable.

P.S.---You can keep the foregoing website pages open in separate tabs or windows [if you don't shut down you computer(s) everyday], and refresh them every few hours, or once a day, as I do. That's how often at least the first two are updated. In fact, at least the first site updates every few minutes; so that's all you have to do is refresh the pages to see the updated information.

I am disgusted that we allow the Organizations that are supposed to help to look the other way. Different Story when they want our money. Where is reports from World Organization, Red Cross? Where is information from Sierra Clug, Concerned Scientists, too busy with own Agendas? Where are the Media too busy getting paid off by GE and the like?

Thanks RSN but want more information; Heard GreenPeace was going to area to get Facts...where are they? That was 3 weeks ago. Greenpieace never caved in to Blackout before.

This article would be much more powerful if all of the data within was supported by source information. Citations for the "facts" reported.
There is no MSM coverage of this event, and much hunger for real data. But we need credible sources, not just fact stated as unsubstantiated opinion.

WOW. the sheer amount of misinformation & non-scientific commentary here is incredible. There is no difference between your crazy anti-nuke ranting & the "Birther", anti climate-change, and young earth creationist nut-jobs that don't accept peer-reviewed scientific conclusions. The simple FACT is that Renewables are joke; they are nothing more than an expensive feel-good veneer covering the vast ammount of fossil fuel plants that will be built to provide REAL power that solar & windmills can't. We need to stop Renewable & Fossil Fuel plants & embrace Nuclear Power in order to save our environment & fuel our economy. GO NUCLEAR!!!

WOW is right. A few recent articles come to mind:

or perhaps

I really hunger for intelligent debate about the serious issues which affect us all. Analysis that can last more than a 7 word billboard and doesn't sneer at facts and intellectualism . There are intelligent differences of opinion which can be discussed with respect, depth and clarity instead of talking points and bombast.

How are so many people in this country duped about their own current and future well-being not to mention the earth's?
(yes, there are many links about that too)

Radioactive exposure doesn't kill people. People kill people.

No, people don't kill people!
Corporatized inhumanity - in search of unregulated, indifferent, non-accountable profits kill people ... and, obviously, cannot care.

Perhaps we need to aim our weapons of self-defense in more appropriate directions.

Compare the hysterical reporting of the Deep Horizon Oil spill and the Fukushima radiation spill.

This today from Kyodo News (note this is a May event, not the original event)::

Highly contaminated radioactive water that leaked into the sea in earlier May from a pit near a seawater intake of the No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant totaled 250 tons and contained an estimated 20 terabecquerels of radioactive substances, Tokyo Electric Power Co said Saturday.

The estimated amount of radioactive substances from the plant, crippled by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, is about 100 times the annual allowable limit for release outside the plant, said TEPCO.

The enemy of the response now essential to contain this nightmare is human nature, the decrepit wait-and-see process that has led to so many past disasters. It is as if we have reached a learning peak and now slide downhill along a spillway of ignorance. In Florida we are just learning that the fertilizer-indu ced algal blooms may contribute to Alzheimer's, ALS, and other neuro conditions. But so many still demand green yards, and damned the consequences.

Let's help save Japan, and the world.

+2 # Snafubar 2011-05-21 20:19
All this is good comments.
Maybe missing is the details of what would happen if the molten core of reactor one sinks in the moten concrete, earth and stone and reaches the watertables.
Then there would likely be a huge explosion simply due to high pressure steam, and considering the temperatures we are talking about and the consecutive hydrolysis, hydrogen explosions.
This in turn could imperil watever remains safe of reactors 4, 5 and 6, nott o mentioned already damaged and most likely leaking reactors 2 and 3.

Now when it comes to radioactive leaks, before advising people to remain indoors, would it be possible to have some figures comparing the amount of radioactity released at Fukushima with 8 or 10 years of shooting depleted uranium in places like Irak or Afghanistan?
Such figures would help grasping what we are talking about.
Please don't forget also that radiations are nott he only issue with these materials - they are extremely toxic and carcinogenic apart from their radioactivity, as most heavy metals are.
Oh, boy!

+3 # Mardi Gras 2011-05-22 11:29
Good question about comparing radioactivity released by Fukushima with that released by years and years of firing uranium munitions. Both stories reliably buried by the MSM. Those of us who are informed are fighting almost straight uphill, we need to keep inventing ways to raise concern.
I appreciate input from everyone who has made a comment here, including especially the links to more info and even the satire (?) furnished by Ian.

I truly appreciate your comment, "Mardi Gras"; but, if you read Ian's comment carefully, it is obvious that it is NOT satire; otherwise, I would have given his comment a "thumbs up" instead of a "thumbs down".

Japan made a deal with the devil. The country of the Great Wave of Kanagawa , inheritors of Hiroshima & Nagasaki....wer e too, ironically, too polite. Never should they have had any Nuclear whatsoever on their soil.
It's too late - this event , eerily predicted by Akira Kurosawa in "Dreams" - Mt Fuji in Red - is too far gone..........t he damage is done.
The World Press...CNN, BBC, MSNBC, FOX etc etc are guilty of crimes against Humanity & the Earth - more concerned with cretinous weddings, the rape of Libya & the evils of this World's decadent & jaded civilization is aptly represented by the diarrhea emitting from these "NEWS" agencies - more like agent provocateurs for the monied pundits that wallow in the filth of their iniquities. The leaders of this World - UN, USA, UK Japan, China, Russia, Israel, France etc etc etc are possessed by demonic delusions.
Sayonara Japan - a sublime culture - vicious & kitchy at times but nonetheless an avatar of beauty & subtlety ....the absolute deliciousness of your cuisine, the refinement of your literature & poetry, the wonder of the samurai, the miraculous arts of the Kabuki & Cinema to say the least, your ethereal Geishas ....fashion & modernity, inventiveness & courtesy....... Sayonara Mi Amor ...in another realm, in another time. Bon Courage! we will all follow you soon......peace .

Humboldt Bay power plant has 4 sister reactors to those in Japan. Sitting within sight of the ocean in Eureka Calif. and on the great Calif Fault system this mess has full storage ponds and above ground storage also. This too will need to be buried in concrete someday. In the meantime it threatens all of the pacific Northwest.

Follow the money trail, it works every time. Ask yourselves this why would corporate giants, who holds the monopoly on fossil fuels, then "HELP" a country like JAPAN, limited in resources and requiring massive imports of fossil fuels to design, build and lend money to build 55 NUCLEAR PLANTS that happen to sit right on top of KNOWN ACTIVE FAULT LINES? These corporate giants would have to be CRIMINALLY INSANE, PATHOLOGICAL LIARS or part of the EUGENICS PROGRAM IN PLACE or ALL OF THE ABOVE. Sometimes things are not so obvious when time plays a part, so I'll let you work it out, but as I see it, this is the master plan:
We(NWO)design, build, supply 55 Nuclear Reactors to Japan, then we sit back and wait. Eventually the fault line is going to move and hopefully we'll have another CHERNOBYL. With 55 reactors spread along the fault line and with a huge population close by, we're sure to have one "ACCIDENT", but with a bit of LUCK we might get TWO OR THREE. That will cause a huge scare and HOPEFULLY, put an END to the nuclear power plant business. OUR STOCKS GO UP, WE COULD TIGHTEN UP ON PRODUCTION AND PUMP UP THE PRICES, We'll have an even tighter grip on the masses, one of great FEAR. See what happens when you follow the money trail, you find the DIRTY RATS.... they are called GENERAL ELECTRIC AND WESTINGHOUSE... .. Their GRAND PLAN SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED, and MILLIONS WILL DIE
