Revolving Door Syndrome: Another Public Servant Trades for Corner Office

This morning I signed a petition urging Congressman Issa, Chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, to launch an investigation into the latest revolving door outrage, that of Meredith Atwell Baker. Ms Baker will be leaving her position as Commissioner for the FCC for a corner office at Comcast-NBC as Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, just months after voting in favor of their controversial multi-billion dollar mega-merger.

Free Press President and CEO Craig Aaron in a recent press release spoke of this as an example of "a public servant cashing in at a company she is supposed to be regulating".

He also noted, “No wonder the public is so nauseated by business as usual in Washington — where the complete capture of government by industry barely raises any eyebrows. The continuously revolving door at the FCC continues to erode any prospects for good public policy. We hope — but won’t hold our breath — that her replacement will be someone who is not just greasing the way for their next industry job.”

Nauseated is exactly how we should feel at yet another example of how unregulated power is diminishing our democracy and a government designed to be ‘of, by and for the people’.

I agree with Geiiga on the Daily Kos, who writes, "Meredith Attwell Baker, you have done a disservice to your country and shown yourself to be beneath contempt. If there were any justice for the rich and the powerful, you would be in a jail cell right now."

But she isn’t. And neither is Michael Powell, the former FCC Chairman who “now earns millions as the top lobbyist for the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, a trade group that lobbies for the industry he was tasked to regulate.” as reported by Tim Karr on SavetheInternet.com.

And now AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile is waiting for approval and viewed as inevitable. There is substantial public outcry at the thought of even less competition in a market where we are surpassed by nations in euroland who enjoy more choice, better services and more competitive pricing. As with health care, when it comes to cellphone service, you can get a lot more ‘bang for your buck’ across the pond!
