After considerable thought as to format, I have come to the conclusion that this decade-long instigation is best reported by myself in the first person. Simply by virtue of sheer volume, it must be reported in separate chapters. I will attempt to separate the different chapters in chronological order, however a certain amount of digressing may be necessary so that the reader may fully understand what has transpired and continues to this date.

Chapters will be opened with an e-mail excerpt from a virologist who contacted this investigator in 2009, in response to a comment I had made on a now-defunct website dedicated to H5N1. They will be annotated in RED, grammar, misspellings and formatting have been left in the original. This young Indonesian "scientist" through the years of our contact revealed to me the inner-workings of her lab at Kobe University and a new BSL-4 in Tokyo that was working on H5N1 and H1N1 viruses, among others. Kobe University does NOT have a BSL-4 lab, and yet this microbiologist was assigned by her professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka to work on recombinant H5N1 and H1N1 in a "secret" (her words) lab at their facility. How and why was this allowed to transpire? I have kept our association secret for years, however now that this individual has gone over to the "dark side," and I have decided to reveal everything we discussed.

To many journalists, this would be the equivalent of "burning a source." What I would say to them in response is that I had many a sleepless night wondering which was more important: The identity of this individual against the ramifications of what could happen were I to remain silent. In the end, I decided to opt for telling this story in full and hopefully it will make some small difference between life and death for innocent people.... it really was not a choice, and is in the best interests of the people of Indonesia, especially as Indonesian H5N1 remains a threat and the questions still remain: How did it get here? Was it "released" in Indonesia?

To think that any group of Japanese "scientists" were attempting to steal Indonesian H5N1 strains for profit is monstrous. Even more insidious: that Indonesia could be made the global "whipping-boy" for the next H5N1 pandemic, orchestrated by foreign intelligence operatives and opening the door for invasion "in the interests of mankind," the United States already having tried everything else to concoct an excuse to invade Indonesia for it's resources.

I have never been able to shake the feeling that I was a "Father confessor" to this very young, confused, used and misguided microbiologist. During our final conversation a few weeks ago, I asked this individual if she had problems sleeping at night.

My question went unanswered.

Shinya - Kyoko Shinya, my associate professor also my boss in this project. She's always using me and telling lot of lies.
Makino - Akiko Makino, new assistant professor from Tokyo Univ. She carried the illegal samples from Indonesia.
Yamaoka - Masaoki Yamaoka, a Japanese researcher assigned in Indonesia.
Dr Hatta - Shinya got the human samples from dr Hatta, but claimed it as dr Nidom's samples at Surabaya airport.

This whole story made me think about what I am right now.


Brevig Mission, Alaska, 1997

In 1997, I received a phone call from former Alaska Native Federation President Julie Kitka. I didn't know her personally, however she was well known for her unstinting work in the service of Alaska Natives.

After a brief introduction, Kitka asked me to take a trip to Brevig Mission Alaska to observe a supposedly "civilian" team of scientists who were dead-set on violating the graves of natives that died during the 1918 H5N1 pandemic supposedly in order to obtain viral DNA from the victims. Naturally, the residents of Brevig Mission were up in arms, and yet the (only) "mainstream media" - The Anchorage Daily News - was refusing to report on it. Kitka was concerned about the violation of tribal sovereignty and the desecration of Native American graves, and she had seen my published work regarding the Native American community in Alaska. Would I go?

In 1997, freelance investigative reporter Robert S. Finnegan, then living and based in Alaska was present when Dr. John Hultin managed to con the Natives of Brevig Mission Alaska into allowing him to exhume the bodies of several Native Alaskans against the almost violent protests of the Natives. Plying the Natives with lies and money, Hultin managed to find two corpses that appeared still viable for extraction of the H5N1 DNA buried in the permafrost. One corpse retained the viral DNA in its desiccated lungs. He then returned to the lower 48 with enough DNA to resurrect this killer virus that had been eradicated in the early 1900’s.

Hultin turned virus samples over to the CDC and the U.S. Army (Jeffery Taubenberger) who then proceeded to weaponize the virus H5N1, baptizing his new doomsday creation with the name “Bird Flu.” This virus that had long been eradicated has now been released once more to kill again, this time possibly billions of human beings across the planet, by combining with the brand new killer H1N1 that has the capability to cross barriers in pigs, birds and humans becoming a “novel” virus.

Getting to Brevig Mission was a bitch, and my pilot was not keen on transporting a journalist who told him he was going to study cultural music and customs of the Brevig Natives. He knew it was bullshit...

Hultin and company were already there, he found out soon enough who I was and what I was doing but seemed to be blissfully unconcerned, as if his work had been sanctioned by the Gods themselves. Other civilians with him looked to be "Company" (CIA) however I was never able to ascertain their identities.

The Natives were freaked out. Hultin never knew how close he came to getting killed during his operation, at one point there was fighting among that natives. Cooler heads prevailed, however I wondered later if it would not have been better if they had made this madman disappear and reburied the remains where they would never be disturbed again.

Also dug up was the body of a U.S. Navy Seaman. They took his entire remains, supposedly this was a fallback excuse if needed. It was not. There were also two individuals who said they were from National Geographic, although later Geographic when contacted for comment claimed to never have heard of Brevig Mission or sending a team there.

I returned to Anchorage with an incomplete report for Kitka, as I didn't know at the time Hultin had been successful in removing a sample of viral DNA from a Native woman killed in the 1918 epidemic, and would later very much regret not being more aggressive.

Nothing was heard for awhile about Hultin's operation.

And then one day in 1998, the world was introduced to the "Bird flu."
