Of the Rich, By the Rich, For the Rich

By Bernie Sanders, Reader Supported News

26 June 12

he Supreme Court on Monday reaffirmed its disastrous 2010 ruling that lifted limits on corporate spending to influence elections. Justices reversed the Montana Supreme Court and struck down a state law. "The U.S. Supreme Court's absurd 5-4 ruling two years ago in Citizens United was a major blow to American democratic traditions. Sadly, despite all of the evidence that Americans see every day, the court continues to believe that its decision makes sense," Sanders said.

"In recent weeks, multi-billionaires such as the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson have made it clear that, as a result of the Citizens United decision, they intend to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to buy this election for candidates who support the super-wealthy. This is not democracy. This is plutocracy. And that is why we must overturn Citizens United if we are serious about maintaining the foundations of American democracy.

"I intend to work as hard as I can for a constitutional amendment to overturn this disastrous Supreme Court decision.

"In his famous speech at Gettysburg during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln talked about America as a country of the people, by the people and for the people.' Today, as a result of the Supreme Court's refusal to reconsider its decision in Citizens United, we are rapidly moving toward a nation of the super-rich, by the super-rich and for the super-rich. That is not what America is supposed to be about. This Supreme Court decision must be overturned."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

This article has been up for two days, and not a single comment?

The continent of Africa has mineral reserves and other natural resources that have made many European regimes wealthy for centuries while impoverishing the humans who live there. Now, Western transnational corporations are also exploiting the labor in new ways.

And all the military operations that are highlighted in this article are examples of the "divide and rule" strategy that Power has used against the people since the dawn of civilization. A dawn that first rose on this, the home continent for us all concurrently with that other seminal land, what we now call Iraq.

The arrogance of Power sickens me.

'Tis a bifurcation principle in the history of evolution, a cusp of time where an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure is subsumed by damage control, instead. Nevertheless, for the learning, or learning to learn as Gregory Bateson puts it, missed, there is a wonderful history of humanity over time in western education, also subsumed by the status quo, or totalitarianism . An appreciation for life and it origins (Lynn Margulis), or the Universe (GUTCP) and much more contrasts the desolate terrains in this wake of history, only that it, too, is up for auction with such ripples in human activity. Really, there is not much I can say. I appreciate your comment.

Paul Craig Roberts, Arthur Silber, Tarzie, Chris Floyd, all are reporters needed as much as Nick Turse (and Chris Hedges).
