Of the Rich, By the Rich, For the Rich

By Bernie Sanders, Reader Supported News

26 June 12

he Supreme Court on Monday reaffirmed its disastrous 2010 ruling that lifted limits on corporate spending to influence elections. Justices reversed the Montana Supreme Court and struck down a state law. "The U.S. Supreme Court's absurd 5-4 ruling two years ago in Citizens United was a major blow to American democratic traditions. Sadly, despite all of the evidence that Americans see every day, the court continues to believe that its decision makes sense," Sanders said.

"In recent weeks, multi-billionaires such as the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson have made it clear that, as a result of the Citizens United decision, they intend to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to buy this election for candidates who support the super-wealthy. This is not democracy. This is plutocracy. And that is why we must overturn Citizens United if we are serious about maintaining the foundations of American democracy.

"I intend to work as hard as I can for a constitutional amendment to overturn this disastrous Supreme Court decision.

"In his famous speech at Gettysburg during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln talked about America as a country ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.' Today, as a result of the Supreme Court's refusal to reconsider its decision in Citizens United, we are rapidly moving toward a nation of the super-rich, by the super-rich and for the super-rich. That is not what America is supposed to be about. This Supreme Court decision must be overturned."

I agree with Bernie Sanders. The tide has shifted in favor of fat cats one per cent. We need to take back the action of the Supreme Court in Citizens United and do it quick. The system is slanted to the rich and greedy.

The ability to keep the donors secret is the biggest crime to me.

Perhaps more people outraged by where the money comes from would persuade/force the SCOTUS to reconsider allowing unlimited spending. Not that they would do anything about it, I think a constitutional amendment is the surest way to make sure no branch can act confused as to the will of the majority. Congress should provide at least temporary legislation to give us first, no secret sources, second, spending limits if they can be done to withstand any SCOTUS changes.

The US is headed for disaster thanks to all the Millions and Millions of IDIOTS that have not got a Clue what is really going on with our government and there are a whole lot of IDIOTS out there. The following is a quote I received and that Marine nailed it.
"The danger to America is not (solely) Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency... Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of Idiots such as those who made him their president." - A U.S. Marine

Prior to Obama being elected, Larry King asked Jon Stewart of the Daily Show if America was ready for a woman or a black president.

Stweart looked at him quizzically and said, "This is such a non-question.Di d anyone ask us in 2000 if Americans were ready for a moron?"

Apparently we are getting the best government money can buy, so what does that make the majority of Americans?

cycleman, this is nothing less than a coup d'etat, and the Extreme Court may look at this in a couple years - after the GOP has completely engulfed the government, which has been their plan since Reagan. That's why the cheating tactics; democracy is not the goal. They have openly said that not everyone should vote, and that the new voter ID laws should enable Romney to get elected.

Since only about 50% of elegible voters show up at the polls, it's time to do our part to make sure EVERYONE votes.

We need to eliminate the need for so much money. Most of it is spent on TV ads. This must be limited. I propose c
Congress pass a law that states that All TV channels must GIVE an established amount of time to all candidates for national office. If any candidate BUYS more time, then the selling channel must GIVE n equal amount of time to all the other candidates. Only by equalizing the time that each candidate can we take the need for so much money needed to run for office.

+31 # engelbach 2012-06-26 07:34
Fat chance of the Congress that profits from spending to pass a law against it.

-88 # chirostv 2012-06-26 08:13
Abagail, do you actually believe that it is ok to steal from a private enterprise like a television network and then give what they invested money in to someone else in the name of "fairness"? It takes money to run for any political affice and that will not and should not change. Your idea of theft is interesting however. Since I don't have a lot may I come to your home and see what you have that I need or want and then just take it? Sorry that would make me a criminal which is pretty much what you are suggeting.

+66 # AndreM5 2012-06-26 08:28
Utter nonsense. The broadcast spectrum is part of the commons and WE THE PEOPLE own it, not the "private enterprise." Broadcasters do not have an inherent "right" to profit from our elections, nor do they have a "right" to profit by spreading obvious lies and distortions to influence elections. We DO have a right to ensure fairness, openness and truth in our elections.

The problem is not entirely the do-nothing corrupt Congress. The problem now is the corrupt Supremes who in their activist moves to legislate from the judiciary will never interfere in the purchase of elections.

+31 # Merschrod 2012-06-26 10:53
Chiro, the broadcast spectrum is supposed to be for the public good, and it is allocated toward that end (or it used to be) and the goal of free flow of competing ideas. The spectrum is not a private good, it is a public good. Hence the public, i.e., congress, can decide how that good should be used for the common good. Abigal's household is not a common good, nor is your property for that matter. Maintaining democracy is not like running a business, it is a contextual or environmental effort to keep ideas flowing. Once ideas and thought is stifled - end of democracy.

+6 # Mrcead 2012-06-26 15:35
There was an article yesterday on bad metaphors and why conservatives shouldn't use them. You should skim that article.

Besides, the networks pay us (you included) to be allowed to function. Who exactly are they broadcasting for?

What next only the rich can vote? or may be vote buying? or may be a auction with the highest bidder winning office why bother with election then? For the people by the people! Not by the Corperations for the Corperations! OCCUPY!

+5 # Regina 2012-06-27 13:10
Channels for broadcasting are federal property, overseen by the FCC. Corporations get licenses for their use, and these licenses are subject to renewal. Those corporations owe the country some reciprocity for the national interest, which could include sane rates for election campaigns. But that sounds too civilized for the dog-eat-dog politics of recent and current times.

+45 # Barbara K 2012-06-26 07:24
Abigail: I agree with you, but would take it a step further. All ads are free, with a limit on the number of ads, like one per day per candidate, no longer than 2 mins each. That would be fair and equal and no cost. Eliminates need for lots of money and saves us from having to listen to the lying ads too.

The primary problem with Sander's amendment language is that it is partisan, protecting union rights while taking them from for-profit corporations. This, simply, will not fly in red states; and we'll need red states to ratify an amendment.

Check our the Move to Amend website and sign their petition to get on the database for future advocacy at the local, state and national level.

Look, as long as Congress and the Judiciary make the kind of money and benefits they do, we are asking the well-off (who have lost touch with the average and poor) to deal with the rich. Their salaries are out of line in this economy and they should not be able to make stock investments while in office or on the bench. Read their disclosure statements - it will make you wrench.

Judges and politicians have access to inside information and should divest their holdings before they enter office. If they want to invest In stocks then let it be government bonds that will perform as long as the government does well.

Term limits might also improve the government structure. These lifers in politics have lost touch with reality.

Why is Ron Paul the only Congressperson speaking out against the Obama/Clinton/U S war against the Syrian people?!

+40 # AndreM5 2012-06-26 09:02
Unions ARE NOT CORPORATIONS! What a distortion. Unions are democracies with every member entitled to a vote, even on how they spend their political support.

Corporations are kingdoms run by self-serving CEOs and Boards. Workers have no vote, they are "human resources" (I hate that term) just like buildings and machinery are resources.

Cannot overturn Citizen United without getting rid of the selected corrupt members of the Supreme Court. Since no one has to the guts or the power to impeach any of the right wing justices, and it is very unlikely we are going to get a Constitutional amendment saying that Corporations are not people and money is not speech, we seem stuck until and unless the public really makes a huge unambiguous demand for this to be overturned. If that can happen it is probably going to take a long time, like 20 years. By then we will all be brainwashed or intimidated. This is very very sad and really intolerable abuse of our system and people.

The unfortunate part about american society is that in general many people want simple solutions to their problems. And the person that can offer the simplest solution to living comfortably, will always win. How many times have you become frustrated when someone tells you, you have to jump through 10 steps to complete something? Wouldn't you prefer to just fix the problem? Don't you wish it were that easy?

The next problem with American Society is the level of education most of us have. The average IQ is 98. The average educational level is High School. While only 8.9% has masters degrees where the focus is on the study of factors involved in understanding issues.

With the majority either incapable or unwilling to look at the complex issue we call Society, and always willing to accept anyone's quick fix, we as a minority - the educational elite - should be very concerned about what messages they are receiving and how they are interpreted.

+3 # Regina 2012-06-27 13:20
There are a lot of countries whose high school grads outscore ours by dozens of ranks. And in those countries the people respect education far more than our over-entertaine d, undereducated public. Teachers in those countries are far better educated in subject matter than ours, whose education is heavy on "methods" and light on content. And their textbooks are substantial, not filled with every fad and political demand that legislatures ram through as requirements.

Subject: Trickle up or Trickle down

Hi,

The GOP agenda is to give big tax cuts, loopholes, deregulation, & Corporate welfare to Millionairs and Billionairs and that will inspire job growth with a better economy.

I say instead of trickle down, how about this:

Give 300 million American citizens each one million dollars. It is fair because it gives everyone rich and poor the same amount.
The rich can pocket their million and everyone else will use theirs to 1. Create Jobs in the USA. 2. End the housing crises. 3. End poverty in the United States of America.
If you believe trickle up will stimulate the economy please sign my petition.

That's why I created a petition to The Nevada State House, The Nevada State Senate, Governor Brian Sandoval, The United States House of Representatives , The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:

"Let us try trickle up economics"

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

If we only had a couple hundred Bernie Sanders' this country would be what it could be. As a lone wolf in the wilderness, it will be difficult for him to have the impact he deserves. Citizen's United could never be construed as "democratic" . Our corrupt Supreme Court justices are bent on bringing down our democracy and allowing it to truly be a plutocracy - which it is for all practical purposes. Speaking Truth to Power is only the beginning. We need to get rid of the power brokers who keep bringing worse and worse legislation into law.

Yes, I agree....Bernie Sanders is about as independent as thye come, but he did acquiesce and vote for the Affordable Care Act, as did all the members of the Progressive Caucus. Now two years later, we are still fighting for REAL health care reform.

I think the answer is outside the Beltway. Whatever action we take, they all have to feel marginalized and insignificant.

It's really time we go on the O-ffense for a change, no more waiting to see what they throw at us!

We really need an across the generations full-throttle resurgence of the Occupy movement asap.

Dear Mr. Sanders,

The crux of the problem is the definition of Person in the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment removed a key word needed to describe persons as those created by GOD, and corporations as those created by PEOPLE (or ficticious).

The proposed amendment will not correct the 14th amendment, and while corporations may be restricted from making donations directly to campaigns, it will not stop the redirection of money from private individuals or corporations to non-profit agencies, who then contribute to campaigns.

Let's not forget that the Catholic Church presently campaigns from the pulpit.

Please fix the 14th amendment directly. It only needs one word put in.

Definition of PLUTOCRACY
1
: government by the wealthy
2
: a controlling class of the wealthy
Exactly on point;look at the 400 million projected to be spent purchasing radical right pols by the Koch brothers. 400 million, that is insane for a supposed democracy.
Egyptian citizens stood up for their rights & said hell no we are not going to take it anymore. They stand as a shining example of the power of regular folks to commit to & bring about necessary change. The five members of the Supreme Court who constantly make rulings like Citizens United know exactly what they are doing. The Roberts Court is an activist court committed to the Far Right agenda. Until - and it won't happen or a long time, these are relatively young men - another more liberal justice arrives, we're going to see this country march away from democracy and fairness for average Americans as fast as it can.

Instead of a constitutional amendment that takes too long and requires too much support, inundate Congress with the following petition:

Dear ...:

If you are interested in saving democracy in this nation, please take some action soon.

You should have by now realized that Supreme Court decisions opening up political campaigns to saturation by corporations threaten the very existence of democratic principles.

Use your power to regulate interstate and international commerce and to make tax law to put an end to this anti-democracy movement. Congress has the power to do the following:

* State in law that all money held by a corporation is the legal property of the employees, who earned it, or the shareholders, who own the company.

* Make it a punishable crime for any executive or director to use that money for any purpose not directly related to the core function of the business without the express approval of those who own the money.

* Money spent on political campaigning and lobbying must be approved by popular vote by those (employees or shareholders) who own the money designated to be spent.

(to be continued)

+2 # tabonsell 2012-06-26 14:15
(part 2)

* Executives must specify how much money is to be spent, where it is to be spent and on what specific issues. Those who vote “no” on spending corporate money for political purposes get their fair portion of the specified amount in salary or stock dividend.

* Money spent on political campaigns or lobbying does not qualify as a business expense and therefore cannot be a tax deduction.

No one should be forced to contribute to a political cause in which he/she may not approve, which is exactly what happened at Enron where employees and shareholders saw money they rightfully owned used to destroy both groups. Under this proposal, corporations can continue to participate, as per the SCOTUS decisions, but such participation would be by only those who agree with the corporate objective. Corporate executives and directors can use their personal money to support political causes, not shareholder/emp loyee money they do not own.

And, there’s no need to mess with the Constitution with more amendments.

A similar proposal was made to Congress after the disastrous Citizen United decision only to see a Democratic Congress do nothing, then suffer a serious defeat in the 2010 elections. Now we have another anti-democracy decision extending Citizen United to state campaigns.

This time do something before our democracy is completely eradicated.

That would be so great.. Bring them down to the voters' level. Unfortunately, the country is now so vast that we can't do some things that might have worked in the original 13 colonies where politics had to be local because of the long time getting from place to place.

Unfortunately, the influence of the TV indu$try is $o great that it would be a $tretch for the whores in Congress to pass laws regulating the amount of TV advertising candidate$ can buy.

So, Bernie Sanders, good luck getting these millionaires to go along with you to enact legislation reversing what the Mad Dog faction in the Supreme Court hath wrought.

BTW, you notice most of these Members of Congress were NOT millionaires when they got to Washington. But with payoffs from Our Corporate Nasters, and with illegal money made via insider trading on the stock market, they leave, if they ever do, pretty well fixed for their next incarnation --through the revolving door, working for the same corporations they were supposed to regulate via legislation.
