Make Polluters Pay Us

By Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog

10 June 15

nstead of investing in dirty fuels, let’s start charging polluters for poisoning our skies – and then invest the revenue so that it benefits everyone.

Each ton of carbon that’s released into the atmosphere costs our nation between $40 and $100, and we release millions tons of it every year.

Businesses don’t pay that cost. They pass it along to the rest of us—in the form of more extreme weather and all the costs to our economy and health resulting from it.

We’ve actually invested more than $6 trillion in fossil fuels since 2007. The money has been laundered through our savings and tax dollars.

This has got to be reversed.

We can clean our environment and strengthen the economy if we (1) divest from carbon polluters, (2) make the polluters pay a price to pollute, and (3) then collect the money.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Someone tell Robert Global Warming has died. It was suicide. Too much money.

GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLEBy Thomas SowellMarch 15, 2007 "Global warming is just the latest in a long line of hysterical crusades to which we seem to be increasingly susceptible" Britain's Channel 4 has produced a devastating documentary titled "The Great Global Warming Swindle." It has apparently not been broadcast by any of the networks in the United States. But, fortunately, it is available on the Internet. Distinguished scientists specializing in climate and climate-related fields talk in plain English and present readily understood graphs showing what a crock the current global warming hysteria is. These include scientists from MIT and top-tier universities

yes, Ifeuille, GW is BS. It is a grand fraud. Soon it will probably be a global cooling crisis. The crisis money to be made will be fantastic. You are likely to demand it.

The good news: Sowell was long ago discredited as a charlatan.
The bad news: The Owners will never allow the professor's idea.

Bob is a nice guy, very smart. But he appears to still believe in the S.Clause
& the Smog Fairy. He is a fine public speaker. He should be running for Prez to DEBATE Hillary. Sowell is a very smart guy also; but his mama didn't raise him right, and he turned out awful. Maybe wasn't her fault.

I did not realize that Reich was associated with Goldman Sacks before this article. Goldman Sacks has already set up a group to handle carbon trading, from which they will make more Billions. They are funding carbon trading promotions.

According to Wikipedia both Canada and Australia have dropped carbon trading schemes as too destructive to the economies. We do not want it here, we produce 1/3 as much CO2 as China right now and they are increasing CO2 production. Carbon trading is simply another way for Wall Street to suck more money from the rest of the country.

Despite Mr. Reich's credentials, he is in practice, a buffoon. Much like Rush Limbaugh. W/ Rush it's his delivery, not the content of his message. W/ Reich - it's the content.

This man was Sec. of Treasury. The REAL POLLUTION was set up in 1913 when Congress W. Wilson set up the Fed. Res. Bank - a private non-tax-paying agency from which the US government must borrow in order to operate.

THAT IS FINANCIAL POLLUTION AND REICH KNOWS IT !!

I beg your pardon Mr. WaaDoo, Sir; but you changed the subject. Please follow accepted etiquette here.

WaaDo - besides talking totally off-point your facts are wrong - Reich was Secretary of Labor - not Treasury.

Actually jon, WaaDo was on point.

Many are in poverty today because of the 1913 Central [Fed] bank creation. Coffee used to be 5 cents. Take home salaries are down 20% in purchasing power in 30 years; The nation's profit (needed for job creation), is almost half taken by the 1913 "Fleet Street" created central bank, (It was 17% for years). The monster continues to grow, aka "trade treaties".

Whether or not you think Climate Change is a legitimate problem,(I basically don't) you can still support a carbon tax on the basis of the strongest of Reich's arguments: the air belongs to all of us, and we the people should collect our "rent" of this common resource. Just from the point of view of driving around our cities and breathing filthy exhaust fumes, the asthma and other respiratory problems people suffer, it makes sense. My only caveat is watch out they don't tax the "little guy" (us individual drivers) and go lightly on big trucks and corporate smokestacks!! The devil is in the details, but I think Reich is right on re: the carbon tax.

Reich was not Sec. of Treas. But he is over committed to the status quo, as seen thru his rose colored glasses that he got from Clintons.

If the conversation was limited to those of us with a scientific degree, there indeed would be a lot less idiots and charlatans denying the science. But it still wouldn't matter in terms of policy, our government as well as most every other government across the globe is bought-and-paid -for by those who would sell their own grandmother to the Chinese for organ harvesting to make a buck, they don't give a damn about sustainability or the state of the Earth's climate we are bequeathing future generations...

yes Buddha, obviously so. And more so as time passes. The solution is hardly more of the same big government. It is less.

It is the power of government that is the tool of corruption. And Global warming is a sham. Follow the money.

You have exceedingly wonderful dreams. Unfortunately, the wealthy investors in fossil fuel have different dreams and a lot of money to make their dreams a reality. I'm just wondering if these wealthy investors have discovered a secret planet where they are planning to send their grandchildren.

Sorry SweetPea, we are investing in solar-it is looking good. We are going to use money we make off global warming.

It´s an accepted fact from all geologists that the planet goes through cycles of hot and ice age.

The big debate right now is if Mother Earth is having a temporary hot hiccup before returning to the current ice age we are in -or not- because we still don´t know enough about it.

We do, however, already know enough to realize that the planet doesn´t need our 10% of CO2 thrown in on top as well.

Depends if you feel we´re in for the long haul or not.
