Rage Against Paul Ryan

By Tom Morello, Rolling Stone

17 August 12

Rage Against the Machine's guitarist blasts Romney's VP pick and unlikely Rage fan.

ast week, Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan, the Republican architect of Congress's radical right-wing budget plan, as his running mate. Ryan has previously cited Rage Against the Machine as one of his favorite bands. Rage guitarist Tom Morello responds in this exclusive op-ed.

Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn't understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn't understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine.

Ryan claims that he likes Rage's sound, but not the lyrics. Well, I don't care for Paul Ryan's sound or his lyrics. He can like whatever bands he wants, but his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage.

I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings!

Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta "rage" in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions.

You see, the super rich must rationalize having more than they could ever spend while millions of children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night. So, when they look themselves in the mirror, they convince themselves that "Those people are undeserving. They're . . . lesser." Some of these guys on the extreme right are more cynical than Paul Ryan, but he seems to really believe in this stuff. This unbridled rage against those who have the least is a cornerstone of the Romney-Ryan ticket.

But Rage's music affects people in different ways. Some tune out what the band stands for and concentrate on the moshing and throwing elbows in the pit. For others, Rage has changed their minds and their lives. Many activists around the world, including organizers of the global occupy movement, were radicalized by Rage Against the Machine and work tirelessly for a more humane and just planet. Perhaps Paul Ryan was moshing when he should have been listening.

My hope is that maybe Paul Ryan is a mole. Maybe Rage did plant some sensible ideas in this extreme fringe right wing nut job. Maybe if elected, he'll pardon Leonard Peltier. Maybe he'll throw U.S. military support behind the Zapatistas. Maybe he'll fill Guantanamo Bay with the corporate criminals that are funding his campaign - and then torture them with Rage music 24/7. That's one possibility. But I'm not betting on it.

He likes songs he doesn't listen to.

He signs letters he doesn't read (asking for stimulus funds).

He promulgates a "philosophy" (having read a couple of Ayn Rand novels in high school, for God's sake) that he doesn't understand deeply enough to know it's atheistic.

Gadz, and they think he is VP material? How scary is that?

Don't vote Republican at any level, we have several states that need cleaning up too.

DO VOTE as if your livelihood is at stake, as it certainly is.

The Republicants seem to have a penchant for picking crappy candidates. They're against those that seem "too educated", and they like someone with a snotty, arrogant, edge that can snap out with insulting, biting, quips that lack documentation. I don't know what's with people with an apparent world view that would make them lean to the ultra right; especially minority and un-rich people.
They, the tea party dipshits, and the Palin-type republicants make Jon Stewarts job easy and he's laughing all the way to the bank. Go, dumb asses.

About as scary as Sarah Palin, and she was just stupid.

+5 # bmiluski 2012-08-20 08:32
Everyone keeps calling Palin stupid. I don't think so. Just look what she accomplished with her stupidity. She got herself elected governor then managed to get herself nominated as VP of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. She has managed to undermine the republican party thus losing an election for them. Left her job as governor half way through her term to go on a book tour that netted her a million + dollars and is now commanding and getting hundreds of thousands of dollars for speaking engagement. Please, where can I get that kind of stupid.
Believe me, I have nothing but contempt for her but I cannot bring myself to call her stupid.

+3 # Observer 47 2012-08-21 13:26
Perhaps it's just that those who pay her and cater to her are MORE stupid! Actually, I would call her ignorant and totally lacking in intellectual curiosity. Which is even worse because, although you can't fix stupid, you CAN fix ignorance, but Palin has no desire to fix it.

+5 # pamitty 2012-08-20 15:44
You are right about that! There have been several studies about how the brains of GOPers and Democrats work differently. One group like fast judgements and quick quips, the think each should look out for themselves, "I'm alright Jack, kkeep your hands off my stack" mentalities, and are not muchconcerned about "Others" and "those people".

Dems take longer to make up their minds, the do more thinking about stuff and tend to be kinder and actually think people should take care of the poor. Not to make them rich, just help them past their suffering. Rightwing tends to love to jump on the bandwagon without much thought either before or after.
The rightwing are a bit happier because they don't feel obliged to help anyone but themselves , they don't worry much about how other people feel.
Must be nice, but I wish they would think things thru, like more of the working poor would be able to pay more tax if they got raises and decent wages. Sort of every boat rises is good.

Please don't declare that, just because Ayn Rand called herself an atheist, that atheism and objectivism are related in any way. All the atheists I know are not half as selfish and hypocritical.

+30 # davidr 2012-08-17 16:25
I agree. Atheism just happens to be the massively salient aspect of Rand to which Ryan has been perpetually oblivious.

No doubt he remains delighted with objectivism, as it tends toward objectifying everything (including people) for one's private use and delectation.

Ironically, though Ryan would never grock this, Jesus was more understanding of atheism ("Why do you abandon me?") than objectivism ("Love thy neighbor as thyself").

These right wing candidates never seem to change — or learn. Reagan thought "Born in the USA" was about American exceptionalism — a word that wasn't invented at the time, but applicable just the same.

...and they think he's "intelligent!" They call him a policy wonk like Bill Clinton. Maybe he likes to talk policy as does Clinton, but I think wonk means smart, doesn't it? And if he doesn't understand then he's not smart. What passes for smart in the Republican Party is this?????

I wish we could strap Ryan down, clamp his eyes open like the guy in "A Clockwork Orange" and force him to watch the awesome video for Rage's "Sleep Now in the Fire" over and over, he might learn something (and folks, if you haven't seen the video, youtube and watch it).

@Tom: You have my utmost respect man. Keep on rocking and keep on raging. It is going to be up to you and others in the industry of like mind to put into music the struggles of today. The 60's had its soundtrack. The corporate and Plutocratic greed and the mass impoverishment it has spawned today needs its soundtrack too. I keep hoping that there will be a huge mass concert for this income/wealth disparity issue that Occupy tried to fight in Washington on the scale of the Million Man March, and aware musicians like yourself and Rage, and The Boss, would all play it. I would be there in a heartbeat, just as I was in the Occupy marches here in Los Angeles before they were crushed.

Morello's rant (or "rage") against Ryan and the corporatists he represents is wonderful.
My gurss is that Ryan and other righties of his age bracket enjoy heavy metal rifts based only on pure machismo. A "let's go kick some ass" frat house philosophy.
"Rage" may exemplify some ass kicking-but the ass they want to kick is everything Ryan represents. And it would not even surprise me if he (and many of his ilk)have ever taken the time to listen to lyrics of the rock music they enjoy. That would actually take some thought and actual critical thinking skills-somethin g they so dramatically lack.
Thank you,Tom.

Ryan is a complete pschopath. He is a political whore of the worst kind. He is the essence of our broken govt and a person whose dream is to crush our constitution, protections, regulations and Bill of Rights at any cost to the majority of the people of the nation. He bet against the nation succeeding and had a stake in the loss. He is a ruthless, heartless, greedy mentally ill person who is a threat to the health, safety and welfare of the nation along with Romney. A possible Ryan/Romney win will be a nightmare for all of us except a few at the top. And he talks about small govt while he has a govt paid pension for life and wants a voucher system for our safety nets while our govt pays for his triple A healthcare that the tax payers also pays for. He is dirt!!!

To paraphrase from the Beatles, the man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest. Ryan got a BA in both Economics and Poly Sci from Miami of Ohio. Not a bad school if you are interested in partying as much as going to class, but not recognized as one of the better schools even in Ohio. He is a follower of Milton Friedman; however, when asked (several years ago) what he thought of Friedman's "homo-economico us" construct, Ryan seemed quite unfamiliar with the term or its purpose. Anyone who has actually read Friedman knows exactly what this term means and how Friedman used it. Ryan as an economics guru is simply not credible.

Ryan "liking" of RAM in such a selective way is characteristic of his and the Repubs' propaganda: Just noise and no content.

Righties can't seem to be original. Why don't they express their "creativity" and start their own "band"? They could call it Rage for the Reactionies.

There are no more "two peas in a pod" than Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. They both pretend to have some "common folks" culture but really prefer to keep in step with the wealthy. They pretend they are going to improve Medicare but actually have it on the slab in the political morgue. And two years of tax returns to the American people but whatever is required from a fellow Republican...su ch as John McCain. And they both know damn little about foreign policy or diplomacy but they can pretend.

What Republicans fear most is what the republicans deny exists the most, namely the VULNERABILITY of the poor! The republicans, and especially the conservatives, fear that because they have a difficult time IMAGINING how they, i.e., conservatives, would manage to even survive without money, fame, and (especially corrupt)power, and especially without ego and drama! The poor, on the other hand, have been and will continue to be able to survive, regardless of any and all oppression, repression etc., because they have that almost MAGICAL "something": that essence of INSTINCTUAL NECESSITY! The poor can survive by using their ingenuity and innovation and creativity by creating work in the grey, black, shadow market, namely counter economics. The 1%, etc., FEARS the ENERGY of the poor and so gets religions and governments to burden the poor with ILLUSIONS, namely "morality" and "shame" for needing to do whatever the poor must do TO survive!

0 # Joeadventure 2012-08-21 03:21
I am a lifelong Republican and I don't "fear the VULNERABLITY of the poor," If fact, unlike all of you here,I want the poor to move up to middle-class, then to also become "rich", (whatever that means). The question is how do the poor do that Barbara. Is it throught continued handouts, or to stop the handouts and make the poor make correct choices; ie: working, staying away from drugs/drinking, not having children out of wedlock. My favorite band is also Rage and I get it. But if Tom really wants to put his money where his mouth is then he can give away everything he makes over 30K a year to the poor. Will he do it? I bet not! You all need to go to youtube and start watching Milton Friedman. Capitalism is THE ONLY SYSTEM THAT WORKS. Ask the members of RAGE as they live in really nice houses, drive great cars and live the same life as Mitt/Ryan. They are Posers as was Lennon, The boss...The people here are sheep waiting for their next handout. Let's see how that works out as we are 16+Trillion in debt. The can is at the end of the road.

+2 # suzyskier 2012-08-22 14:01
The poor could learn a trade as a way up the ladder with government programs, but wait, all those jobs have been sent to China by people like the Mitt. So what are the poor suppossed to do? You can't just suddenly end all the programs they depend on. Of course there are lots and lots of infer structure jobs they could do if congress would ever pass a jobs bill. Of congress doesn't want a jobs bill from Obama, no that might make him look good. Maybe they will wait and see if the twins R @ R win but all those jobs would of course be given to the private sector.

It is sickening to see how far down we have come since the 1990's and before. Never would have dreamed things would get this bad. R and R are just EVIL. The possibility of them being elected sends shivers down my spine. What century are these GOPers from?
