Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Arizona's 'Bull' Connor

By Peter Morales, Guardian UK

19 July 12

heriff Joe Arpaio faces legal action, yet again, on charges that he has violated the rights of Latino citizens in Maricopa County, Arizona. Already, the county has paid out something like $50m in damages over the years. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) are bringing suit in federal court on behalf of several plaintiffs.

Poor Joe has become something of a caricature of late. He is a symbol of mean-spiritedness, cruelty and racism. He proudly promotes his actions designed simply to humiliate prisoners. The US department of justice has accumulated a mountain of evidence against him, yet drags its legal feet while the racial profiling and arrests continue.

Less than a month ago, I, along with several other religious leaders, were treated to a tour of Arpaio's infamous "Tent City" jail. There, prisoners are kept in tents that reach 130F heat in the Arizona summer. The other religious leaders, including the Rev Geoffrey Black, president of the United Church of Christ and the Rev Dr William Schulz, president of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (and former president of Amnesty International), and I were appalled. The Maricopa sheriff's department has become a collection of thugs with badges.

Several thousand of us – Unitarian Universalists from across the country working mano en mano with local activists and religious leaders – held a vigil outside Tent City last month. It was profoundly moving to see a sea of thousands of people wearing their "Standing on the Side of Love" T-shirts, waving candles and singing in protest. They are taking that determination to work for justice and compassion across the country.

What is happening in Maricopa County must be seen to be believed. I am ashamed that this is happening in my country, that the people of Maricopa County continue to re-elect this tyrant, and that the legal system of my country does little more than scold like an inept parent.

Two years ago, I was arrested along with more than 20 fellow ministers from across the country and a number of local activists. We were protesting Arpaio's "sweeps" in defiance of the ruling of a federal judge. A year ago, I stood trial for that act of civil disobedience. During that trial, I saw deputies of the Arpaio's perjure themselves so blatantly (and artlessly) that the judge disregarded their testimony.

While I applaud the courage of MALDEF and the ACLU, and wish them every success, I am more convinced than ever that the fundamental issues before us are not legal. Arpaio continues to break the law with impunity not because there is a lack of conclusive evidence. Arpaio continues unchecked because some people are afraid and because decent people who know better are timid. This is what always occurs when tyrants rule.

What is truly frightening is that the fear and racism that feeds Arpaio is not limited to Maricopa County, or to Arizona. Arpaio is a hero to the extreme right. Arizona's law is being copied elsewhere.

No American my age can watch what is happening in Arizona and not have flashbacks to Alabama and Mississippi of the 1960s and law enforcement officials like the infamous "Bull" Connor. I would think no European can see sweeps and racial profiling and not recall images of the 1930s.

No one should be treated the way Arpaio treats people. No one.

I hope this lawsuit is successful. More importantly, I pray that people will turn away from fear and demagogues. I pray that we will see our common humanity and embrace our common future.

Is it racial profiling or adherance to the law of the land?

+37 # Merschrod 2012-07-20 07:32
Perhaps the law of the land, applied with bias, but the treatment reveals the intent and the psychosis of the the men hiding behind the law.

If all people (regardless of citizen status)are not treated with dignity and humanity, then we are not keeping up with the mystique of American, nor universal human rights.

+28 # Hey There 2012-07-20 09:09
it's racial profiling.

0 # Livemike 2012-08-02 21:49
Sherif Joe adhering to the law of the land? The man is the least honest law enforcement official in the continental United States. Look up what happens when his friends get arrested and tell me about "adherence to the law". Not to mention that many of his practices VIOLATE the law (and it's not just me saying that, it's the Justice Department).

Arpaio fancies himself as some sort of modern day Wild West "new sheriff in town", righting wrongs, keeping the peace, and saving the honor of the citizenry. And he certainly has a lot in common with the bought and paid for local sheriff Wyatt Earp and his associates put out of business. The Earps had their own handlers, but they had far less in common with "Sheriff Joe" than he does with the Clanton family and other criminal elements that were running Tombstone, Arizona before the Earps rode into town.

May you and those with you find the way to bring courage to those people. You are doing good work.

Arpaio and his gang of Nazis need their own stretch in one of Maricopa county's prisons. Suing the county is bullshit, going after these domestic terrorists is the only remedy.
We're Number One in putting our citizens behind bars, Number One in jailing children, and now we're Number One in letting Fascists represent the law? Shame on us all for allowing that.

America and the world needs to see youtubes of this man and his armed thugs. Let it go viral. There are so many crimes taking place in the world, we need to see the tent prisons and people livIng in these torture chambers, to believe it. Sometimes, shaming people into taking action is the most effective action. 130 degrees, that's insanity! Tom

Got a link? I'd be glad to put it on my facebook page and publicise any video you have. This man (and I use the word loosely) is a disgrace to cops everywhere, Arizona, America and the human race.

Has Arpaio been elected and reelected, or are the elections rigged? How many votes are "lost" each time in machines that conveniently malfunction? How many citizens are unable to vote, out of fear, or deliberate inconvenience, or misconstrued identity? Do non-threatened Arizonans really like thug rule?

+6 # oakjoan 2012-07-20 11:43
Unfortunately, I think that Arpaio and his band of thugs are totally backed by a majority of the people in his county. A majority of lame-brained racists vote him in over and over.

More than an overthrow of this maniac needs to happen before things change. It's hard to change the minds of racist sadists, but maybe Arpaio could be gotten rid of if there was a giant mobilization effort to get those people who are not racist maniacs to vote in somebody who'll obey the law humanely.

+6 # X Dane 2012-07-20 12:57
Regina.

No doubt some Arizonans would like to see him gone. But I am afraid that there are TOO many, who share his feelings and like his methods.

The people of Arizona revere the man. It's idol worship to the worst degree. For every single person who protests, there are scores who sing his praises. Lots of racists and bigots here.

+23 # X Dane 2012-07-19 23:34
What is so frightening and demoralizing, is that Arpaio is scum, and far too many people in our country are so full of anger and hatred. The times are difficult, so there has to be scapegoats, somebody has to pay. They are completely loosing their humanity....if they ever did have it.

Arpaio gets re elected time after time and so does a total idiots like Louis Gomert of Texas. It is painful to realize HOW many imbeciles there are, since he is STILL in congress, the same goes for that creep Adam West in Florida and Michelle Bachmann.

We really are in trouble, when they.... and several other hateful people are STILL running, I should say RUINING the "house". We want to kick out the incompetent people in Congress. But that does not seem possible, when the VOTERS are at the ROOT of the evil!!.

I feel so sad for this big beautiful country, for it is in the grip of too many mean spirited and incompetent people. I can't see how we can overcome their negativity and racism.

It's good to see some common decency being displayed in our country by these religious leaders. We've seen so much corruption in society, including within the religious hierarchy, that it is refreshing to see some decency show its face.

+18 # Barbara K 2012-07-20 04:25
It is time for this tyrant to pay for his own crimes and be taken off the streets and spend some time in prison himself. He clearly is guilty of Abuse of Power, as well as many civil liberty crimes perpetrated by him and his also sadistic deputies. If animals were treated as badly, there would be protests, and there should be protests for treating these humans as less than humans. Prowling the streets in search of people to arrest for some made up crime is deplorable. This person is a sadistic SOB, elected by other sadistic people. His reign of disgusting tyranny must end and decency needs to be restored in that county and the entire state, for that matter, starting at the top.

+4 # Regina 2012-07-20 15:38
Yes, Barbara -- at the top, Governor Brewer seems to be of the same ilk as Arpaio. What's more, all too many in this set of postings tell us that the citizens of AZ share Arpaio's opinions and cheer him on, and obviously keep reelecting him. For shame!

+21 # genierae 2012-07-20 05:07
If Arpaio is found guilty and jailed, it would be fitting justice for him to spend his time in his own tent jail, wearing pink and feeling the heat, literally. What a hoot that would be!

Mussolini would be a far better comparison, The man is a political climber, a bully who attracts other authoritarians among the celebrity inanities. When cornered he hides behind his barking crazy mask. He is a man who provides a profile for psychologist biographies.

+13 # Brewsir 2012-07-20 06:58
Arpaio is the iceberg's tip. He is racist and all the things that go with that label. He replicates that 97 year old man whom is now facing justice in another part of the world for gross atrocities committed against thousands of Jews in Europe. We have Arpaio where he needs to be and we now must do what he deserves. Bull Connor had much more electoral support as he administered his racist brutality through batons, water hoses, dogs and bullets. It is nice to see his political deodorizers become silent and hide as he blusters to the end of his rope. Hopefully he is allowed to enjoy a replica of the environment he has advertised well with the help of mass media.

+14 # Trish42 2012-07-20 07:08
I was a teenager when Bull Connor turned the dogs and the fire hoses on black men, women, and children. I won't forget it until my dying day, and I left the South shortly after seeing it. What a shock it is to realize that just about this entire country now seems to approve this kind of thinking and governing. BTW, as a Unitarian Universalist I am so proud that our religion is truly standing on the side of love!

+14 # Muffy787 2012-07-20 08:07
I have a winter home in a very nice, gated community in a Phoenix suburb. My neighbors, many retired military officers, invited the sheriff from Hell to our clubhouse to speak this Spring. You would have thought this cretin was the greatest in the world, the room was packed. He has been much WORSE since that Idiot Brewer became governor. They are both birds of a feather, trailer trash, with no education. A little power in this type of individual is very dangerous. I bet he will be re-elected unless he is in JAIL where he should be.

0 # bigkahuna671 2012-07-21 14:18
Muffy787, I'm a retired Marine in Tucson and I can tell you, most Tucsonans have nothing but contempt for Joe Arpaio. I am also Hispanic but I am what is called a Guero in Spanish. It refers to being light-skinned. My brother, a San Diego County detective, is darker than I and laughingly says he always carries his papers when he comes to Arizona just in case Arpaio's goons try and pull him over for DWB (driving while brown). It would be so fitting if, after this trial, Arpaio found himself wearing a pink jumpsuit and eating PB&Js in a canvas tent.

+11 # linkedout 2012-07-20 08:23
It's racism under color of law, like it always is when old white men run the show, as they do in Arizona.

Arpaio plays to the racist fears of the anglo community in Arizona. Make no mistake about it - this is blatant racism, pure and simple.

+11 # JSRaleigh 2012-07-20 08:45
When Connor turned the fire hoses and attack dogs on the civil rights protesters in Birmingham, it shocked the conscience of the nation.

What does it say about us as a country that Arpaio's actions have not?

+7 # Jules 2012-07-20 09:05
We must remember that he is a County Sheriff. That means that his tent city jail does not hold felons only those of minor offenses. So those who commit major offenses are sent to state or federal prisons and are treated better. Sheriff Arapaio is just a sadist.

-16 # randyjet 2012-07-20 09:09
If Arpaio were another Bull Connor, the UU folks would have been beaten and jailed. Sorry but this is over the top. I never knew that jailed inmates had a constitutional right to air conditioning. I guess that back before A/C became common they simply did NOT jail anybody.

I too was concerned about Arpaio's methods until I found out the facts. I went to his web site, and found that he did not put those who were waiting for trial on work details. The reason for pink underwear was to stup the theft of such items. Then he came up with a catchy way of using that.

What Arpaio has done is to becomce a media hog to get re-elected. His measures are no worse than most law enforcement agencies. He used to have his most wanted posters on his web site and I went to it. The overwhelming numbers of those were for back child support payments. I had expected to see armed robbery suspects and the like. He later took it down since it is not too heroic to be fighting and jailing mommys and daddys for back child support.

Most of the inmates of the county jail are those who cannot make bail, or are misdemeanor or contempt of court violators. Not exactly your hardened crooks. Then the rest are those who are here illegally, who are waiting for pick up by ICE. They most certainly do NOT have even the right to be here, much less comfy jails.

Of course you got all your information from Joe's website!! Try going to the newspapers in Maricopa County and reading the real facts. Check into the arrests of his close deputies.
So you think it is okay for humans to live in 130 degree weather and eat moldy bologna for meals? Glad to know what kind of human you are.

I looked Arpaio up online and most responses said the name was Italian, one said it was Greek. Aygen, there are millions of Americans who don't deserve what's happening in this country. We do our best to bring change, but the forces ranged against us are very powerful. I believe that change will have to come the hard way, but it will come. Once the American people mobilize en masse, nothing will be able to stop us, and in the end we will have a true democracy, where the common good always comes first. E pluribus unum!

This is the same Joe Arpaio who, facing challenges to the legality of his actions, has challenged the legality of Barack Obama's presidency, joining "birthers" in claiming Obama's birth certificate is fake.

I don't think even he really believes that; I suspect he just wants to stay in the limelight while diverting people from the issue of his own thuggery.

America libertaed most people from the concentration camps of Hitler (except the members of the GLBT community!) where is Amerika today as to 'liberate' from Arizona's concentration camps?
