Susan Manning, who lives in Wales and has not seen her son since 2011, makes rare statement as the sentencing phase of his trial is enters second week

he mother of Bradley Manning, the US army private who is this week expected to be handed a long jail sentence for his role in the WikiLeaks dump of US state secrets, has said she believes she may never see him again.

Speaking after the 25-year-old was found guilty of espionage, theft and computer fraud, Susan Manning urged her son to "never give up hope".

Susan Manning, who lives in Pembrokeshire in Wales, has health problems and has not seen her son since 2011. In a rare statement in the Mail on Sunday, she said: "I know I may never see you again but I know you will be free one day. I pray it is soon. I love you Bradley and I always will."

The sentencing phase of Manning's trial began last Wednesday, a day after he was convicted for passing to WikiLeaks more than 250,000 US diplomatic cables and several hundred thousand battlefield logs from the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, many of which were published by the Guardian.

Susan Manning reportedly could not bring herself to watch TV or listen to the radio to hear last week's verdict but waited for her sister, Sharon Staples, to tell her by phone.

Staples told the paper the family is now "praying for leniency" and described her sister's shock at seeing Manning on her last visit to see him locked up in the US marine base in Quantico in February 2011.

"He was sitting on the other side of a glass partition and when I walked in I heard the sound of the chains round his hands and feet before I saw him," Staples said. "Most of the time they sat in silence but held each others' gaze. She didn't get to hug him but was able to tell him she loved him."

Afterwards, according to Staples, she said: "You wouldn't treat a bloody animal like they're treating Bradley."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

I assume this is meant to be sarcastic? If I hear one more politician in one more speech use these words one more time I will throw up.

Quoting ER444:

Yes, sarcasm was intended -- that's why I used quotes.

"You wouldn't treat a bloody animal like they're treating Bradley." (quote).
Well now, who are the feral and rabidly savage animals who have tortured and abused this true global (not just US) patriot?
My heart goes out his mother and all who see him as a victim of the National-Insecu rity state. But at least she can be proud of him as never being anything but conscience driven and not becoming a fink for the spy-vs-spy international moles burrowing under our everyday existence to consolidate it's grip on power.
Would that it were Dick Cheney et all -but they'd be shitting themselves and crying like the cowards they are, not showing Manning's remrkable calm not just in the glare of a show-trial but after all that has been visited on him.
BTW, from the BBC, Dimwits Bush has just had "successful" heart surgery; he whom they too-kindly describe as having "retired from public life" since leaving the presidency (that he usurped, disgraced and polluted -my words). As if he had anything to contribute, like Jimmy Carter has done since his untimely demise at the hands of Reagan. It's news to me that Dimwits had a heart at all, after such "compassionate conservatism" as mocking a woman about to be executed, as governor of Texas.
The current administration seems to carrying on the legacy of fear mongering, divide and conquer and homeland insecurity that Manning, Asssange and Snowden tried to shine a light on, by pursuing and prosecuting them.

And don't forget the martyred Michael Hasting who also warned us, apparently too often,

"If it was not for character whereby man would make every known sacrifice, even to giving up life itself for the sake of principle, human beings would be no better than the beasts of the field." - Alfred W. Lawson

My hat is off to this young man for his character and integrity in standing up for what is right.

This young man Manning, whose youthful courage I never had, will, I hope, someday be remembered for someone who tried to save the once great United States of America.

When did our undoing truly manifest? For me it was the coup d'etat that took place in our 2000 selection of the president. Bush was too stupid and probably did not have the wherewithals to be that cunning but he had many evil helpers, starting with DICK. Let us not forget, let us never forget. I hope that there really is a hell for some of the Bush Administration' s evil gangsters.

Very sad, my heart goes out to his family.
Bradley has proven himself to be tough as hell. I admire him. We all owe him a huge debt.
