Indigenous Journalist Faces Prosecution for Covering DAPL Resistance

Dewey insists he is part of a “nonviolent drone direct action” for environmental justice.

n Indigenous journalist, widely known for reporting on resistance at the Standing Rock camp against the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL), is due to face trial for his work, the independent press organization Shadowproof reported.

Myron Dewey, Newe-Numah/Paiute-Shoshone from the Walker River Paiute Tribe, Agui Diccutta Band (Trout Eaters) and Temoke Shoshone, is accused of “stalking”, for his use of a drone while reporting.

The accusation was made by Shannon Eagon, the wife of Doug Eagon, a member of the National Guard.

If Dewey is hit with the class A misdemeanor, he faces up to one year in prison and a possible US$3,000 fine.

The complaint, which has been approved by Assistant State’s Attorney Gabrielle Goter, alleges that on October 8, 2016, Dewey “harassed, frightened, and/or intimidated security workers on a job site.”

It also states that he targeted “their vehicles, license plates, and/or where they were working, which made them fear for their lives and their families’ lives.”

Dewey insists he is part of a “nonviolent drone direct action” for environmental justice.

“Not only was our drone up in the air. There (were) four other drones in the air, several other drones. We put the call out for drones,” he stated, reported Shadowproof.

Dewey is due to go on trial next Wednesday.

While the Standing Rock camp was dismantled months ago, and with U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval for the completion of the pipeline, Dewey is just one of a number of journalists who face prosecution for their reporting on the issue.

He has launched a fundraiser to ensure he is able to defend himself from prosecution and to also document other court cases against Indigenous people involved in both covering and resisting the pipeline.
