John Oliver Wants to Make You Finally Care About Gerrymandering

By Ed Mazza, Reader Supported News

10 April 17

“Every one of us should get an equal chance to make a bad decision.”

errymandering might not be the most exciting topic in politics, but John Oliver pointed out during Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight” that it’s one of the most important.

“Gerrymandering has become a very precise science,” Oliver said about the practice of redrawing district boundaries so one party has a better chance of winning. “Interestingly, it is one of the few remaining types of science in which the Republican Party currently believes.”

While the GOP has certainly benefitted most in recent years, Oliver noted that the Democrats have been pretty good at gerrymandering at times.

Oliver said neither party should be allowed to “dilute our votes” by redrawing district maps.

“Everyone, every one of us, should get an equal chance to make a bad decision which fucks things up for everybody else,” he said.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Gerrymandering, re-districting, and the Electoral College itself are rigging devices. A direct one person - one vote tabulation resulted in a Democratic sweep this last election. If we got rid of such rigging mechanisms, our federal government would look a lot more progressive, much less corporate conservative. It would look the way America really is, with We the People striving for a more Perfect Union-- and we'd be in charge.

America is NOT a democracy. It never was and never should be. Why do liberals not understand that fact? Do they consider that fact an "alternate" fact? Gerrymandering in the past drew lines for NY, MA, CA and IL. Now Dems complain when their power is reduced and R's can draw lines? How hypocritical is that?

Yes, by all means let John Oliver, cartel media whore, keep us distracted with his gerrymandering drivel while the hacking of electronic voting machines and fake exit polling make this a moot point. http://coloradopublicbanking.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-view-from-top-of-power-pyramid.html

Thank you John Oliver for making this situation a public issue. If we want our democracy back, this is one of the important things we have to change. Too bad no one took this issue seriously enough before the right wing succeeded in effectively stealing all three branches of our government.

One of the most absurd examples of gerrymandering is the state of Utah. Are they kidding me? They are so chicken to run on their own merits they virtually guarantee a win in all districts.
