Newt Gingrich Wants New House Un-American Activities Committee

By Gregory Krieg, CNN

11 November 16

ormer House Speaker Newt Gingrich is calling for the creation of a new House Committee on Un-American Activities, invoking the infamous "Red Scare"-era congressional body as a blueprint for weeding out American ISIS adherents and sympathizers.

"We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis," he said during an appearance on "Fox and Friends" this week. "We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis. We're going to presently have to go take the similar steps here."

Gingrich, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, has been touted as a potential running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee.

His comments on Monday echoed Trump's, as the billionaire businessman suggested "Muslim communities" should be held to greater account for the actions of their neighbors.

"They know what is going on," Trump said during a speech Monday in New Hampshire. "They know that (the Orlando killer) was bad. They knew the people in San Bernardino were bad. But you know what, they didn't turn them in, and we had death and destruction."

The House Un-American Activities Committee was founded on the eve of World War II but gained greater notoriety a decade later as it launched a series of investigations into alleged communist elements inside the U.S. government and other aspects of U.S. society.

Gingrich framed the idea of its revival in some form as part of an inevitable escalation of the conflict with the Syria and Iraq-based militant group.

"We're going to ultimately declare a war on Islamic supremacists and we're going to say, if you pledge allegiance to ISIS, you are a traitor and you have lost your citizenship," he said. "We're going to take much tougher positions."

During an appearance on "Fox and Friends" this week, Newt said: "We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis... We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis." -- He then added under his breath: "Now we are the Nazis." ?

Gosh, that didn't take long at all, huh? Surrounding himself with the likes of Gingrich, who wants a new House Un-American Activities Committee, and with others from the far-right universe like Jeff Sessions and Rudy Gulianni who wants to be Attorney General. The President-Elect may tone down his rhetoric, but surrounding himself with these characters really shows his true colors.

What's next...a new Cabinet position like Secretary of Race Relations? For David Duke, of course.

I remember reading about people hired under the Bush Administration for high level jobs because they answered correctly when asked about abortion.

This is Bush Jr Part II unfolding.

Exercise: Find a copy of 'Red Channels' - or ANY other 1950's anti-communist propaganda - and substitute the word 'terrorist' for 'communist'.

It'll sound VERY familiar...

First agenda item of the new House Un-American Activities Committee: investigate the Trump Administration.

No. As the Rump has made very clear (despite his make-nice post-election comments), its first task will be to investigate Hillary Clinton and her husband, and keep on investigating until Republicans find something, or can fabricate something, for which the Clintons can be indicted, jailed and tried, in that order.

You wonder about the self awareness of these people. If there were ever an unAmerican running loose, it is the majority of the right wingers. This country was founded on the idea of pluralism (E Pluribus Unum), but they are trying to go the opposite way. You don't get much more unAmerican than David Duke and Donald Drumpf.

The House Un-American Committee never went after Nazis, they went after Communists. Like his boss, Donald, Newt sounds ignorant of American history. I suspect that the original committee would not be pleased with a president who loves Russia. It is amazing how quickly Donald and his team are transforming our country into a fascist state.

Actually, HUAC did originally focus on fascists (chiefly the home-grown variety, of whom there were plenty during the Depression) as well as Communists, but it wasn't long before its attention shifted exclusively on the left.

Extreme old age has some advantages, one being a good long time to observe one's fellow human beings. One thing I've learned is that people like Newt almost always accuse others of the exact thing they're doing. So it should be easy to counterthreaten these yahoos.

Nader is suggesting groups of 100-200 people to watch and pressure each of our 535 representatives . I say we could extend that tactic to people like Newt and organizations like this. I'd happily be part of the loyal opposition to THIS group of a-hole$.

Secondly, there were a LOT of connections to Russia in both campaigns, which suggests that the complicated money games of the rich are a two-edged sword. They obscure fiscal relationships but they also have a six degrees complexity that can connect anyone playing those games to anyone else including terrorists, arms dealers, drug cartels, human trafficking etc.

It's true that any one of us could be detained and jailed at the whim of the state -- but that goes for them too. If the government is hostile to justice than we work from outside the government. We tie up their policies. We challenge them constantly.

Another thing I notice is that these pompous blowhards absolutely HATE being laughed at. IF the committee work begins we get in the streets and we sue and we laugh at them.

Maybe we take Jon Stewart hostage and MAKE him go back to The Daily Show.
