Hillary Clinton Made More in 12 Speeches to Big Banks Than Most of Us Earn in a Lifetime

By Zaid Jilani, The Intercept

09 January 16

emocratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders this week assailed rival Hillary Clinton for taking large speaking fees from the financial industry since leaving the State Department.

According to public disclosures, by giving just 12 speeches to Wall Street banks, private equity firms, and other financial corporations, Clinton made $2,935,000 from 2013 to 2015:

Clinton’s most lucrative year was 2013, right after stepping down as secretary of state. That year, she made $2.3 million for three speeches to Goldman Sachs and individual speeches to Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Fidelity Investments, Apollo Management Holdings, UBS, Bank of America, and Golden Tree Asset Managers.

The following year, she picked up $485,000 for a speech to Deutsche Bank and an address to Ameriprise. Last year, she made $150,000 from a lecture before the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

To put these numbers into perspective, compare them to lifetime earnings of the median American worker. In 2011, the Census Bureau estimated that, across all majors, a “bachelor’s degree holder can expect to earn about $2.4 million over his or her work life.” A Pew Research analysis published the same year estimated that a “typical high school graduate” can expect to make just $770,000 over the course of his or her lifetime.

This means that in one year —  2013 — Hillary Clinton earned almost as much from 10 lectures to financial firms as most bachelor’s degree-holding Americans earn in their lifetimes — and nearly four times what someone who holds only a high school diploma could expect to make.

Hillary Clinton’s haul from Wall Street speeches pales in comparison to her husband’s, which also had to be disclosed because the two share a bank account.

“I never made any money until I left the White House,” said Bill Clinton during a 2009 address to a student group. “I had the lowest net worth, adjusted for inflation, of any president elected in the last 100 years, including President Obama. I was one poor rascal when I took office. But after I got out, I made a lot of money.”

The Associated Press notes that during Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state, Bill Clinton earned $17 million in talks to banks, insurance companies, hedge funds, real estate businesses, and other financial firms. Altogether, the couple are estimated to have made over $139 million from paid speeches.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Is this why she has supported the banks in the past? Because they pay so well? Bill admits that since leaving the WH they've never lived so well. ANOTHER reason to support Bernie who apparently has successfully lived a middle-class lifestyle with no regrets. OK, so the Clintons aren't billionaires, but most of us in this country would love to have their bank account. Even today $139 mil isn't peanuts.

And bc you and others are jealous, this is somehow more egregious than e.g., Cheney/Hallibur ton's ripping off the American taxpayer and dissing vets and never really serving in an armed forces they took for granted and used for their corporate welfare?
How much have the CEOs of the pharmaceutical companies made this year on the backs of the elderly? or daddy's little boy, Trump? or the shrub-minds of the Bush/Prescott family or the coal-mining corporations' shill McConnell et al? All this envy and all this blindness to the pervasiveness of the unimpeded and unbridled greed in the folds of the Teapugnican sheep...?

Dear Readers of RSN,
MoveOn is asking members to vote on the candidate that MoveOn should endorse. Please, if you have ever signed a MoveOn petition, go to moveon.org and vote for Bernie. Gaining the support of MoveOn will be a tremendous boost to his campaign.
Thanks, Wally
PS Voting ends tomorrow, Sunday.

MovrOn is a Clinton organization, founded to support clinton in the depts of the Monica Lewinsky affair. "Move On" was meant to suggest that people should move on from this affair and forget it. I don't support Move On at all.

Yes, that is why MoveOn was started, but since then they have supported many progressive causes and apparently are willing to support Bernie if their members choose. They had a similar member vote when Obama was running against H. Clinton in '08. Obama won and MoveOn endorsed and supported his campaign. Come on, RMDC, no one says we have to like MoveOn to give Bernie a boost.

Yes, they have gradually "moved on" from their original purpose. Watching them over the years you could see them moving leftward.

Hillary - turn off your meter.. And see, how good it feels, when you are no longer a high paid thug.

Thank you, Bernie. Thank you, Jill.

The irony is that these speeches are so clearly bribes. Clinton and most other politicians who do this just read the same old boiler plate to an audience that is barely listening. But the money is transferred and all appears legal and above board. Really this is a form of money laundering. These are bribes that are washed clean by a 45 minute speech.

And how the hell can the Clintons
have private property for more than 50 million dollars when they have worked
their whole life in public positions?

+1 # RMDC 2016-01-09 18:30
Yes, they are life-long public servants. Bill Clinton never stops taking aobut his and Hillary's "service to humanity." What crap.

How can anyone in federal office leave Congress wealthier than when they entered? Apparently it's all too easy to do.

rump troll alert! so full of themselves! - isn’t it sad how pledgers to write-in bernie CAN'T STAND WHAT BERNIE SAYS! we on the left have brownshirts of our own! itching for a fascist strong man! - to beat down opposition they pick bernie! - # diamondmarge7 2016-01-08 09:56 "... Take the pledge! ..."

- pledgers are bernie's 2nd worst nightmare! after zomblicans! - # jsluka 2015-08-30 17:22 "Don't care what you say, I will not vote for Hillary Clinton. Simple as that. It would be better for a Rethuglican to get elected, and bring on the revolution!”

- bernie caucuses with dems, votes with dems and runs for prez as a dem, for good cause - for example in 2010 obamacare raised taxes on 1%; in 2013, with needed dem support in congress, obama ended bush 2's 2001 tax cuts for the rich; in 2014 OBAMA AND THE DEMS cut the capital gains loophole, that allows billionaires to pay much lower tax rates than their secretaries - a sure sign that dems are not in full lockstep with our billionaire masters or our masters' zomblican puppets!

bernie founded his own grassroots group and does not endorse any campaign to pledge to write him in, and so, throw away our progressive vote and elect a zomblican!

about hill bernie says - "Yes, we do agree on a number of issues, and by the way, on her worst day, Hillary Clinton will be an infinitely better candidate and President than the Republican candidate on his best day."

listen to bernie! DON'T pledge to, or write him in! - go bernie!

Some people make money off of war, lots of money. (See Prescott Bush, George H.W. Bush, George w. Bush for example) and can continue to buy politicians who will push for war ( See Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama for instance). The media is pushing Hillary to go against THE DONALD and ignoring Bernie Sanders in order to make Neocon Hillary “our” next President

SAYS 'IT ALL'. Hillary is a WHORE for The Big MONEY.

By any standard this is open bribery. It is a bribery that may be tax deductible. Hillary will surely put the banks ahead of you.

Let's see, Republican of Hillary. Which will it be? Never mind, they are just different varieties of the same species.

says - # hwmcadoo 2016-01-10 09:43 "... Let's see, Republican of Hillary. Which will it be? Never mind, they are just different varieties of the same species."-

- not to say there are no huge, very real, differences between every dem and every zomblican!

judgment is the acknowledgment of real differences! when you believe in things you don't understand you're gonna suffer! - stevie wonder
