71 Percent of Chileans Approve of Legislation to Decriminalize Abortion

Almost three-quarters of Chileans approve legislation meant to decriminalize abortion in some cases.

poll by Plaza Publica Cadem found that over 79 percent of Chileans approved the women's right to abort – including 60 percent under specific circumstances, and 19 percent absolutely.

The legislation Chilean legislators are considering only allows abortion in specific circumstances like rape, risk to the mother’s life or deadly birth defects. The right-wing and Catholic sectors of the country fiercely reject the bill, including Christian Democracy, a party belonging to the ruling New Majority government coalition.

Moreover, 62 percent of the people surveyed disagree with the official policy of the Catholic University to refuse to carry out abortions in its health centers, even if they are legal.

Yet the majority of Catholics surveyed still support abortion under specific circumstances (65 percent), while 48 percent of Evangelical people back the procedure, but with limits.
