Republican Arrested for Voter Fraud in Virginia

By Aviva Shen, ThinkProgress

20 October 12

ennsylvania resident Colin Small was arrested Thursday after he was caught illegally destroying voter registration forms in Virginia. Smalls worked for a firm hired by the Republican Party of Virginia to register voters, but was spotted throwing away 8 voter registration forms in a dumpster on Monday, the deadline for registering to vote in Virginia.

The 31-year-old man was charged with four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of failing to disclose voter registration applications and one count of obstruction of justice. Small was spotted by the owner of a store in Harrisonburg, Virginia, who became suspicious when he saw Small's Pennsylvania license plate.

The Los Angeles Times has the details of the discarded forms:

Three of the voters turned out to be already registered, according to Donald Palmer, secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections. The other five were not registered, and have since been added to the voter roll. Registration closed on Monday.

In Virginia, and other states, it's a crime to accept a voter registration form and not turn it in. Small is charged with destroying voter registration applications and obstruction of justice.

"There is no indication this activity was widespread in our jurisdiction," said a statement from the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. The investigation is continuing, the sheriff's office said.

Small worked for Strategic Allied Consulting, a registration firm now being investigated for submitting fraudulent registration forms in Florida. The Republican National Committee paid more than $3 million to SAC but quickly cut ties once the fraud came to light. As for Small, Virginia Republican Chairman Pat Mullins said he was fired as soon as the allegations surfaced. RNC spokesman Sean Spicer said Small had "made a mistake" and that the RNC "fully supports" the charges against him.

Though this is now the second criminal investigation against voter registration employees hired by the Republican Party, it hasn't halted the shady registration practices still operating in at least ten states.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, it's going on all over the country. The Republican Party has been corrupted so thoroughly that they have no shame at all. They know that the only way they can get elected is by cheating, lying and stealing, and they are prepared to do as much of this as is necessary to win. Barack Obama is by far the better man, but in this immoral, dishonest society he may not get a second term. I shudder at the thought of these soulless, heartless people occupying the White House. If it happens it will be very hard to bear.

Im betting they have hundreds if not thousands of people doing this. You know they are the party so worried about voter fraud...Ooops hypocrisy of the Greedy One Percent knows no boundaries. Having the right wing monitor things like this, is like having the fox guard the hen house. I hope many more instances such as this turn up, and the GOP is revealed to be the lying frauds they truly are.

+22 # Linda 2012-10-21 09:02
pernsey They have already revealed themselves to be the lying frauds they are but what have we done about it ?
They are so brazen they lie to our faces on our TV sets in debates 27 lies by Romney 24 by Ryan .
They know we know their liars but they could care less because they know they are greasing the palms of Rove and his lot to ensure they have done everything to steal this election through fraud and corruption .
We sure don't matter to them ,we never have and anyone who would delude themselves to believe otherwise is a fool! Republican's are and always will be the party of the corporations.
They are only using these dim witted right wing ,"so called," christian's for their own gain and will discard them like the garbage they have proven themselves to be ,"willing to throw the poor and elderly under the bus ,".As the saying goes when you lie down with dogs you get flea's !

Bush stole the 2000/2004 elections ,people should have been screaming fraud in the streets ,our elected officials should have been screaming fraud when the SC handed the election to Bush even after proof of fraud in Fl and Ohio.
Instead of screaming from the hill tops all was quiet in the media and in Washington and Bush took the throne .
Will we let that happen yet again ? Sadly I think we might .
President Obama needs to get on top of this before its too late to change the course these corrupt Republican's are on !
We need watchdogs everywhere there can be corruption !

Agreed, the GOP(Greedy Old Party) are an unscrupulous, unprincipled, and unpatriotic legion of losers. Knowing that the last 2 republican victories were stolen, one in Florida on in Ohio they realize their ideas are unsaleable to real Americans. Only through the use of voter suppression, employer intimidation, dirty tricks, fraud and felonies can they hope to steal another.
These are cowards of the first order willing to lie cheat and steal (and thats just the guys at the top of the ticket) to win.
Think about what the last two stolen Bush elections got us, the 9/11 attacks, a country bankrupted by a keystone cops administration of two idiotic invasions and occupations, and a country left on what would have been the nations worst depression if not for Obama's steady hand.

They have been doing this for decades. Now I believe it is time for the Elections to be investigated. Starting Now

I don't know what counts as an 'indication.' When my daughter was in college in Arcata, a group was on campus registering students. When it came time to vote she along with her other democratic friends discovered they were not registered. One student who registered republican was registered. I bet this goes on everywhere.

Mr. Small is guilty of undermining the American government, sedition, and real attempt in ending democracy. A slap on the wrist encourages this behavior. I want to see many, many years behind bars for this 'terrorist.' Enough.

It is up to you to make sure you are registered to vote. Go to the County Office of Elections and get your voter registration.
It is unthinkable that parents do not help the kids do this. Then the School Administration should advise students of what to do while they are in school. If you can vote at home, get absentee ballot or go home and vote if close by.

We cannot afford to give our Votes to the Nazis

What we are witness to is the culmination of a long process to turn America into the religious theocracy the right wing wants. Voter fraud has been happening for years and now punks like the one caught have become more brazen. He does not look like a person I would want in my home or as a neighbor and I can guarantee you he will not serve one day in jail. He looks like the poster child for Hitler's SS and probably goes to sleep each night with the Horst Wessel playing quietly in the background. Damned scary.

Quoting erogers:
Voter fraud has been happening for years...

That was NOT voter fraud!! That was more like "election fraud". There's a BIG difference!

The voters who registered did nothing remotely questionable, but were about to be defrauded of their rightful voting privilege.

Vote early in case you find *yourself* suddenly unregistered. There's still time to get reinstated to the rolls!

Does not say too much of the Phony Religion teaching others to steal information, to destroy information, to lie.
I doubt there is a God in their Church, Satan not even. He has morals of his own and GOP/TP have none nor do their Religions.
I use that term very loosely since their seems to be no Religion anymore just Greed, Murder.

And I understand that there is some "anonymous" group that has posted signs all over black neighborhoods in Ohio with a huge gavel and words to the effect "Voter Fraud is Against the Law" and then show the fine. Trying to scare people from the polls even though the law they are talking about won't take effect this election.
Who is guilty of voter fraud?

The reason they are going nuts over vote fraud is because they are doing it so much. The republican party has become filled with lying crooks that are trying every trick in the book to cheat.

Republicans claim to take the high moral ground, yet they think taking away our right to vote is just fine! What screwed up morals and ethics! They are despicable!

+8 # BeaDeeBunker 2012-10-20 23:51
And the right-wing pundits continue to claim that the fix IS NOT in! G.M.A.F.B.!!!

+20 # X Dane 2012-10-21 00:21
That is far from all.... Rachel Maddow showed some sort of flyer distributed in many Latino neighborhoods. In ENGLISH it says to vote on the 6th November....... .. In SPANISH it says to vote on 8th of November. Who knows how many thousands were distributed??

It is sickening to see what our country is becoming because of the right wing and T bag republicans.
IF Romney wins I AM CONVINCED THE ELECTION IS STOLEN. there are way too many frauds being committed by republicans.

+2 # Independentgal 2012-10-21 14:27
Has anyone corrected these flyers, or made it known in the neighborhoods that this despicable activity occurred?

+2 # KittatinyHawk 2012-10-21 18:12
No most people don't do anything but come on sights and bitch.
It would be simple to talk with teachers of HS students, to go to areas and hand out information to store owners, barbershops, Let the Democratic Headquarters know so they can fix the matter, talk with Clergy, Schools, and get flyers out or Ad in Papers Show Republicans for what they are....Anti American, Anti God

I wonder about that too. but I have not heard that it happened. And it is only ONE of many, many, many ways they are working at stealing the election.....

Registering voters, and then shredding or throwing out the democratic ballots is another. The outfit doing it was hired by the republicans and operated in several states.
Swing states, of course ALL of them.

There are many more, intimidation of minority voters another, etc. etc. etc.

This fraudulent activity should be labeled as "Terrorism" -- a denial of a citizen's constitutional rights. The DoJ must prosecute and jail people like Colin Small to a lengthy term to discourage others from either contemplating or taking up this illegal activity.

If this happened during another country's election, the US government would be using a klaxon to inform the world of the fraud. However, it seems to be a low-key event in the US.

Romnesia's fraudulent e-voting machines must be carefully scrutinized and monitored to avert a repeat of the Bush-Gore debacle.

I agree, but they should give this cretin a chance with a lighter sentence if he spills his guts as to who put him up to this . We need to get those at the top who are instructing these whacko's to commit these crimes .
I am pretty sure he didn't just come up with this idea on his own if not directly instructed then he was urged in another way .

It's amazing how thugs like this grow up, wear suits and get fancy haircuts.

This is such a frigging outrage, all over the country Republicans are both trying to keep people they think are Democrats from voting AND doing crap like this.

They should have to forfeit every race, then maybe we might get something done.

Is anyone surprised that these sleazy Repukes threw the guy under the bus as soon as he got caught? Others need to be prosecuted NOW before more of this fraud takes place. Why would anyone but fools trust anything these anti-democracy thieves say or do? Don't let us be dragged into the abyss with them! Make sure you vote and don't use a machine! If you are denied a paper ballot, get a witness and a lawyer! You are legally entitled to choose your method of voting in most if not all states. Watch out especially in Wisconsin, Florida, and Ohio.

I said from the start of this campaign that if Romney win's this election its because they stole it for him.
I knew straight away when they hired the weasel Rove that the fix was in . Rove fixed it for Bush and he is being paid big bucks to fix it for Romney !
Romney would never win this election fairly on his own merit. He lied about the great job he said he did as Governor of Ma. he cost our state billions in law suits from the Big Dig project because the contractor he gave a no bid contract to used shoddy material and the wrong cement and the tunnel collapsed killing one woman an injuring others .BTW Palin wasn't the only governor whose a quitter . Romney quit mid term when the heat was coming down on him over the collapse of the Big Dig project and the billions of dollars it was going to cost the state to settle law suits !
This man is so sleazy half of his own party hates him never mind the rest of us who now know Romney to be a bald faced liar or maybe I should have said pathological liar .
If Romney wins this election we have to know it was fixed and we shouldn't accept it and neither should President Obama ! We should take to the streets and expose Romney and his Republican backers publicly for the cheats and liar's they are !
When they start taking away your right to a fair voting system its high time we fight back ! It was high time when Bush corrupted the system but we sat back in silence and look what that got us !

It's a good thing the dems don't have any shady vote reg / fraud activity in their past. As for the reps, can someone explain to me why we have a two-party system anyway ? Seems like they are always at loggerheads and nothing ever gets done, except the Oil Criminals and the crooked bi-partisan pols they own make massive amounts of money at our expense. Apparently all the voting fraud accusations made by you repugs were true all along. You were the first to know, because it was YOU who were engaged in it.

Still waiting for the repugs to prove the mass conspiracy among Democrats to vote even though we're not allowed to...

Still got nothin', huh?

Well, apparently YOUR team has been cheating a lot. I should say, "apparently your team is AT IT AGAIN!"

WHY IS THAT?

Why is it that repugs want to prevent Democrats from voting? Could it be that you know your ideas are SO OVERWHELMINGLY unpopular that the only way to continue getting your way almost all the time is to prevent the democratic process from even happening?

Everyone is afraid to call this what it is, a systematic, organized voter fraud initiative aimed at stealing the vote in the swing states. Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia ... all linked to the same GOP "consultant".

-1 # KittatinyHawk 2012-10-21 18:24

These reported actions are an outrage! The Murdoch owned news services all screamed about the "Acorn" practices, which were ultimately proven false, then, all but ignore these barbaric actions! Fines or even jail time will NOT provide justice in this case ... justice can only be served if the registrants are reinstated and the party who sponsored these actions is voted out of every office in that state!
