Mother of Slain Navy Seal Rebukes Romney

By BBC

11 October 12

The mother of an American killed in last month's Libya consulate attack has said his death has been used by the Romney campaign for political purposes.

he Republican presidential nominee has been citing his meeting some years ago with former US Navy Seal Glen Doherty.

His campaign said the candidate would respect Barbara Doherty's wishes and stop mentioning her son.

The attack on the consulate in Benghazi on 11 September has become a political issue ahead of the election.

Doherty was killed in the attack in Benghazi along with Ambassador Christopher Stevens and two other officials.

'Inspired'

"I don't trust Romney," Mrs Doherty told Boston news station WHDH.

"He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama," she said.

Campaigning on Tuesday in the state of Iowa, Mr Romney said that instead of running away from danger during the Benghazi consulate attack, Doherty had run towards it.

He reportedly used the anecdote as a metaphor for what Republicans must do to regain the White House in November's poll.

"They didn't hunker down where they were in safety," the former Massachusetts governor was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

"They rushed there to go help. This is the American way. We go where there's trouble."

"We go where we're needed. And right now we're needed. Right now the American people need us."

Mr Romney is reported to have mentioned Doherty at other events on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Romney campaign said in a statement on Wednesday: "Governor Romney was inspired by the memory of meeting Glen Doherty and shared his story and that memory, but we respect the wishes of Mrs Doherty."

A campaign official confirmed Mr Romney would not re-tell the anecdote.

Friends of Doherty have spoken publicly about his encounter with Mr Romney at a Christmas party.

His friend, Elf Ellefsen, told a Seattle radio station: "He said it was very comical. Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image.

"He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale," Mr Ellefsen added, according to ABC News.

Yes Romney will use any means to further his quest for president.
Using a military person to get votes.
Do you know where Romney was during the Vietnam war. Getting a pass by going to France on missionary work with the Mormon Church. Oh yes, he supported the Vietnam War but couldn't serve there. How convenient.

Right, and he criticized his room mates who were doing Sit-Ins against the Vietnam War. When his college deferment ran out, he got another one for being a Mormon. There were pictures of him on the French Riviera(sp?) basking on the sandy beaches saying he loves Ann.

Yeah, another chicken hawk, like Chaney (who had more important things to do than RVN). One of the downsides to an all volunteer force is that the wealthy can easily sit it out and become even farther removed from a middle class reality, while they set it up so that their wealth, power & low risks are passed on to their kids. Romney is like W on steroids, only colder, greedier and even more out of touch. This man would not have survived NAM - he would have been fragged in short order.

Damn shame he did not go and get fragged.

It's not just during a volunteer force. Remember there was a draft during the VN war and the likes of bush and cheney got out of serving.

Romneyhood is a shameless opportunist who will use anybody and do anything to further his own self-agrandizat ion. He lied about knowing this wonderful young man. He didn't see him after the Christmas party where he didn't even recognize him after introducing himself to him 4 times in an hour. It was so disrespectful of him to use him as he did. What a featherhead he is. Not Presidential material at all, he's all playacting, and not a very good job of that. Romneyhood is one mean SOB, who will sneer at your face while robbing your pocket.

This shows the delicacy of political posturing and name dropping. One may mean to cite a relationship or contact with or without motive, but always risk that it may be perceived as exploitation. Amazing how neither candidate apparently has adequate coaching.

For two weeks the President LIED about the TERRORISM on 9/11!!!

He lied about the deaths of 4 Americans due to the State Departments incompetence!!

IT WAS F'ING 9/11 for crying out loud!!

This President has to cope with repugs who refused to pay for the security necessary.

The previous President was the reason why 9/11 is a big deal in the first place!!

How dare you lecture us about Presidents and 9/11 when george II actually knew an attack was imminent but intentionally did NOTHING to stop it?

Coincidentally, his own vice-president was a charter member of an organization (PNAC) that previously stated another Pearl Harbor would be necessary to enact it's agenda. It's agenda: War with Iraq, War with Afghanistan, and War with IRAN.

NO. Don't lecture us about 9/11. YOUR President stood by while nearly 4 THOUSAND Americans died.

Was it "incompetence" or just TREASON?

It is really ironic that Mitt Romney mentioned running towards the danger when he himself ran from it when he had the opportunity. Just think about the Vietnam War and how he ran to France to convince Parisians not to drink, smoke or to have sex with only your wife.
The man makes George W. Bush look like a war hero

It's hard to outdo the previous comments; I feel the same if not more so. Romney is a political whore (how's that).

BTW, what does the Book of Mormon say about lying? Are other Mormons embarrassed that this is the public face of their faith. If they aren't embarrassed, I can write off Mormons as the only faith that condones dishonesty. All other religions of know of at least espouse all the common virtues.

+29 # Muzzi 2012-10-11 17:22
I wondered about that, too. It is breaking one of the 10 Commandments to tell lies, yet, he does it again and again and calls himself a "man of faith"?

Actually, the Book of Mormon condones lying to promote the Mormon cause and it's been reported that he believes it's his job to put a Mormon in the White house.

He was also a crappy and hatewful bishop.

The way both Romney and Ryan bully their 'conversations' - it is a really scary view into what their 'diplomatic' conversations would be with foreign dignitaries. I met Romney ten years ago under similar circumstances at a small gathering...and he displayed the exact same behavior...disr especting and ignoring individuals who were there to be honored. He treated the situation as an occasion to promote himself and treated everyone else like trash. He has no respect for people who are not of his ilk...he is self centered, arrogant, and does not care about anyone that he feels is beneath him...and this includes all the young men and women who serve in the military. You can be certain that his sons will never put their precious lives on the line. I am filled with disgust.

Romney is the first candidate that is a pathogical liar and a Presidential candidate. Nixon was merely lacking character but this guy is truly pathological. It is not that he believes his own lies, his mind allows him to believe that he can just say whatever and it is just fine. A dangerous characterisitic when confronted with the powerful forces that are always seeking the ultimate power. It is time to send him and all of his ilk packing and then begin to tell those who lead us to get down to business---the business of America is the business of every family here---not the elite, not the moneyed interests but our interests.

To your question, Citizen Vox,Mormons also read the Bible so they also know that they shouldn't lie -- which makes
Romney's non stop lying a puzzle especially since as a Mormon male he is a priest and was also a bishop and a Stake President( the highest church authority in say, NY/NJ). Why the Mormon President has not reined him in is also puzzling. Mormons do get impressed with success, like wealth, equating it with virtue deserving God's blessing. It doesn't hurt that he tithes in $millions. Also, as President, he would be a great tool in the conversion of "gentiles" to the LDS church. I'm sure intellectuals in the church are mortified over Romney's lies. I can't say the same for the rest. Like all fundamentalists , they are inward-turning and self-righteous. I'm sure they shall have justified Romney's lies with passages in the Bible.

He is more than willing to kiss anyones posterior if he thinks he will be elected.

I am undone that so many people actually agree with the "lies" that come out of Romney. Our citizens are all suffering from Alzheimers disease.

Considering there are a few who do not appear to have the condition, from the comments made earlier.

Women who vote for Romney might consider being checked, while they have the freedom to do so, since Romney will be delegating the state of Women back to the 18th century.

I detest Romney with every fiber of my being, but no politician asks permission to tell a story he thinks would help him and there's nothing wrong with that. Of course we all know he's still be telling that story if he didn't know that after she protested, the story would hurt him.

OTOH, using a band's songs without permission is copyright infringement and does require permission. That's why you're always hearing bands demanding the end of the use of their songs.

As I understand it, the guards at the Embassy were not allowed to carry loaded weapons. How can members of the Armed Forces perform their duties if they are not allowed to be armed? Perhaps Mr. Romney ought to address that question, instead of hijacking the name of a man who died in the service of his country for his own far less noble purposes.

Mind, articles on the attack describe Mr. Doherty as a "former Navy SEAL". Was he actually serving as an embassy guard when the place was attacked? Did he indeed "run toward danger"? I have no doubt he would have given the chance, but did he have that chance?

A minor quibble: why a photo of a Marine Corps honor guard attached to an article about a Navy veteran?

A minor quibble:

So all of you, be sure to vote and take one of the 47% with you to the polls.

Thanks for the responses to my Mormon question. Yes, it must be Romney's donations to the church that prevents criticism. I forgot wealth is admired in the Mormon church; it shows God favors them. This is a throwback to the social Darwinism of the late 18th century. We're headed back to the days of Dickens and vast social inequalities with a Pres Romney.

I recall from Sunday School days a Bible passage about a camel finding it easier to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man. That shouldn't bother the Mormons; they wrote their own book.

I want to go on record that if Mitt Romney is elected, God please help me, that the United States will go to war with Iran. The reason is that two countries with nuclear weapons do not believe that another country should develop the same weapons that they have and in the United States' case has used it by dropping bombs on two cities.
I will go on further and say with the war which will be a ground war with a country which is five times larger than Iraq we will not be able to hang a sign saying mission accomplished for a long time. Further, with a major disruption in oil to Europe we will have a major recession. The cost will exceed over $ 2 trillion dollars and will set a new record for deficits. Mitt Romney would make the worse kind of leader a bully who is also a coward.

+7 # cof818 2012-10-12 08:09
Aside from being thoughtless about Mrs. Doherty's wishes, Romney's comment is both valid AND a source for concern. He is proposing that we CONTINUE to rush in - because "that's what we do"? Like we did in Iraq. Like we did in Afghanistan. Like we did in Viet Nam. It remains to be seen how Libya and Egypt will turn out. Should we do the same in Syria? Yemen? It's one thing to come to the aid of someone in front of your eyes, and to instinctively do your duty. It's another thing to adopt that as a central tenet for what the nation should do. It's short-sighted, dangerous, and stupid. It's been proven time & time again to have unintended, long-term, tragic consequences. Besides respecting Mrs. Doherty, the more troubling aspect of this comment is the underlying message itself.

Dropped on your head in your youth were ya RMDC? First of all there is no parental sign off when your child decides to try to become a SEAL (unless they enlist before their 18th bday). This brave young man (to us moms they always remain our babies) went on to serve this country in active duty and then onto serve at the embassy. Mercenaries carry guns - sadly our Embassy personnel are not locked & loaded, nor are they mercs. Perhaps that should be rethought, although I'm sure countries with embassies in USA would want reciprocal rights to be locked, loaded and ready to fire also.

SSDD - blame the victim (kinda like the old meme about rape 'a woman can run faster with her skirt up than a man can with his pants down').
