Fang reports: "Just before Browning was selected in 2011 by Scott as Secretary of State, Browning led a group called 'Protect Your Vote Inc,' which was set up to oppose fair redistricting. One of the biggest checks to Browning's organization came from the Center to Protect Patients' Rights, which gave $100,000 in 2010."

Florida Voter Purge Official Linked to Koch-Funded Efforts to Defeat Obama

By Lee Fang, Republic Report

08 June 12

n Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice asked officials in Florida to suspend the controversial voter purge conducted by Gov. Rick Scott's (R) administration, citing possible violations of voting rights law. Florida officials had been purging a list of suspected non-citizen voters, estimated at one point to include at least 180,000 people, despite evidence that the list is riddled with errors. Hundreds of targeted voters are in fact American citizens. As ThinkProgress and the Miami Herald have reported, a great deal of the individuals also happen to be Hispanics and Democratic-leaning voters, suggesting the effort is deeply partisan.

The plan for the purge, according to a story from the Associated Press, was initiated last year by then-Secretary of State Kurt Browning after a meeting with the governor. Browning said he was motivated by a "Spidey sense tingling" to undergo a massive project to develop the list now being used to send letters to registered Florida voters informing them that they have been flagged as non-citizens. Although both Gov. Scott and Browning have downplayed accusations that the purge is political, a donation from a secret money group may fuel growing suspicions that the effort is partisan.

Just before Browning was selected in 2011 by Scott as Secretary of State, Browning led a group called "Protect Your Vote Inc," which was set up to oppose fair redistricting. One of the biggest checks to Browning's organization came from the Center to Protect Patients' Rights, which gave $100,000 in 2010. At the time of the donation, the source of the money was shrouded in secrecy. View a screen shot of the disclosure:

But as Republic Report exclusively reported last month, the Center to Protect Patients' Rights is part of a universe of front groups financed by David and Charles Koch, the petrochemical billionaires, as well as several other billionaires, as part of an election-influencing effort. New reports this week about the brothers' strategy indicate that they will now use this constellation of front groups to finance $400 million of a $1 billion campaign in outside money to defeat President Obama and congressional Democrats. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Mitt Romney's Super PAC, and several nonprofits controlled by Karl Rove, will furnish the other $600 million.

Browning, who resigned as Secretary of State late last year, also relied heavily on funds from the Republican Party of Florida and the Florida Chamber of Commerce, a big business lobbying group, to support his Protect Your Vote organization, which ultimately failed in blocking redistricting reform. Browning is currently pursuing a bid for local office.

Update: The Florida Independent and the Brennan Center note that Browning orchestrated a controversial voter purge only weeks before the general election in 2008.

How much longer are we going let this type of criminal behavior continue? What has happened to the moral backbone of the American public that they aren't out in the streets fighting against this thievery of our American system? I am outraged that these Koch brothers and their ilk can buy our government and play with it like a football. Where do I sign up to fight against this kidnapping of our system. Do we want to end up like Nazi Germany? And they said it could never happen here! Some of us knew better, I wish more people would pay attention.

Every minute the government has to borrow more money to finance our debt, and every minute the 99% become more under the control of the debt owners in the 1%. The banks control us when we need to borrow for a car or a mortgage; the 1% controls us through Congress when we rack up large deficits in government spending.

suzyskier -- I'd say we will allow it to go on forever. There's no power left in people. The AAIE has been working tirelessly for a century to gain control of the US. We happen to be living through the moment of their triumph. AAIE refers to a book by Carroll Quigley (Clinton's mentor) called the Anglo-American Elite. He tells the story of the early 20th century control of the US by the AAE. I've added in the "I" because the US is now also controlled dby the Israeli elite -- AAIE.

The US is moving rapidly back to a new form of the middle ages with all of its control by religious authorities, anti-feminism, monarchy, militarism, superstitions, and so on. Feudalism is the term for the political economy of the middle ages. The term is based on the old French word for "debt" or "feo." We pretty much have debt peonage now in the US and that is the substance of our political economy.

There is no hope for the US. It is all downhill into the future. We won't end up exactly like NAZI Germany because Germany had a history and the US does not. We will be every bit as vicious and murderous as the Nazis.

Gotta love that koch kartel. When it comes to politics, they never met a republican they couldn't buy, or a democrat voter they couldn't purge.

What a great American message it would send if Eric Holder & US Marshals arrived in Florida, cuffed Scott, read him his rights & forced him onto a jet to a federal holding facility awaiting trial for his illegal voter purging scheme. Never happen in reality though, but how many hundreds will be arrested in Florida today for marijuana or crack possession, the red meat arrests designed to show how tough Scott is on real crime. After flagrantly stealing the presidential election for Bush in 2000, Florida is ready, willing, & in line to steal it again in November. Even if the horrendous Anti-American purge is stopped, the activist right wing Supreme Court has already rigged the election with their Citizens United decision. The right is stopping at nothing legal, illegal, unmoral, in their quest to remove the Black Man from the White House. Vote Democratic come November, make sure everyone you know does. Our future is at stake big time.
