Diamond reports: "Since anti-abortion activists and their Republican allies ratcheted up their crusade against Planned Parenthood last year, they've targeted any and all allies of the organization to try to make inroads, including the cancer charity. Planned Parenthood provides birth control, STD testing, and cancer screenings to low-income women."

Nation's Largest Cancer Charity Caves to Right-Wing Pressure

By Marie Diamond, ThinkProgress

01 February 12

usan G. Komen for the Cure is the country's best-known and best-funded breast cancer organization. Known for it's iconic pink ribbon and annual Race for the Cure event, the organization has invested nearly $2 billion in cancer education and research since its founding in 1982.

But today, bowing to political pressure, Komen for the Cure announced that it is severing its partnership with Planned Parenthood and will stop providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants that allow their centers to perform breast exams on women who could not otherwise get them.

Since anti-abortion activists and their Republican allies ratcheted up their crusade against Planned Parenthood last year, they've targeted any and all allies of the organization to try to make inroads, including the cancer charity. Planned Parenthood provides birth control, STD testing, and cancer screenings to low-income women.

In a press release Planned Parenthood said it was deeply saddened and disappointed by the decision:

Planned Parenthood Federation of America today expressed deep disappointment in response to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation's decision to stop funding breast cancer prevention, screenings and education at Planned Parenthood health centers. Anti-choice groups in America have repeatedly threatened the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for partnering with Planned Parenthood to provide these lifesaving cancer screenings and news articles suggest that the Komen Foundation ultimately succumbed to these pressures.

“We are alarmed and saddened that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation appears to have succumbed to political pressure. Our greatest desire is for Komen to reconsider this policy and recommit to the partnership on which so many women count,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

In the last few weeks, the Komen Foundation has begun notifying local Planned Parenthood programs that their breast cancer initiatives will not be eligible for new grants (beyond existing agreements or plans).

Komen's pretext for ending the alliance is the spurious congressional investigation into Planned Parenthood led by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL). Democrats say the far-reaching investigation is a political witch hunt and abuse of government resources.

Komen's new Senior Vice President of Public Policy, Karen Handel, not only has a long anti-choice history, but pledged to eliminate grants for Planned Parenthood to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings when she ran for governor of Georgia in 2010.

According to Planned Parenthood, in the past five years support from Susan G. Komen allowed their health centers to provide nearly 170,000 breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals. The charity's decision has succeeded only in depriving low-income women of cancer screenings that could save their lives - a move that flies in the face of Komen's mission.

A nurse I worked with says the government is meddling in your life before your born and then again at the end when the decision to remove 'life support' is being made - everything in between, you are on your own!! Too true.

Karen Handel is a politician, not a human services administrator. She grinds the extreme Republican ax and serves her political agenda, not the organization's cause. The phony decision to eliminate assistance to any organization being investigated is a transparent ploy to serve the Republican dirty-pool campaign against Planned Parenthood. The people truly dedicated to the Komen Foundation should blow the whistle and pull the plug on Handel -- she doesn't belong there, she's just an extremist politician serving the Republican/Tea party, not women who need cancer screening.

That will never happen. Susan Komen herself was a big Reagan supporter, and the woman now in charge was a big Bush family supporter and a die-hard Republican. This is the reason I was never a strong supporter of the foundation, but always a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood.

Reminds me of a cuckoo's nest. It is hard to stay within the realm of reality and logic having to accept that the loonies are in charge of the house.

Avoid the pink ribbon!!! We need to start being more public about boycotting things like the casinos of the guy supporting Gingrich and all of the businesses owned by the Koch heads.

The whole political anti abortion issue has nothing to do with life but about controlling women. Take away a woman's right to her own reproduction and you take away her right to freedom of any kind...educatio n, career, particip ation in her community, politics, even health as this disgusting Komen action demonstrates.

This is how abortion rights are dismantled. Drain the funding of Planned Parenthood, enact sonogram and waiting period laws and intimidate clients and workers entering clinics. Anyone who believes that women should have authority over their own bodies should be horrified by Komen's actions. If they're going to be involved in politics, they need a different tax status. Please, instead of contributing to Komen, send your donations to Planned Parenthood. Let Komen feel the pain of their disastrous decision.

There are lots of good organizations that work with Planned Parenthood, help them all.

I thought what a great Foundation until it was found out to be Hypocrites. They should be sued and made to give donations back. They have committed Fraud.

this is a Great Time since OWS has started some Waking Up to the World. Let us keep the Wake Up Calls coming in.

Thanks Mayor Bloomberg too. My check is going in to help that other $250,000 get its mark. By this weekend this Planned Parenthood might see a million dollars but we must remember to give yearly if not more often. The life you save could be someone in your family or friend.

Planned Parenthood and other organizations who help get screenings for life taking disease do not just help Women but Men also.
Men can get Breast Cancer as well as Women.
Children can get breast Cancer, Elderly.

No one is a Christian who does not respect others, respect life. These hypocrites only care about a baby when it gets them votes. Then if the mother is on welfare, she is a whore. These are Evil People and we warned you all in the 1960's about these Whacko's. They are the Reincarnation of the Puritans and the Spanish Inquistion. In fact they make Hitler and Manson look like Angels.
They go stealing babies during disasters. Now their Judges are stealing babies, children from illegals brought here to do slave labor. Sad thing is they do not want them after they are out of diapers. These people should not be allowed a goldfish no less a child.

I Believe in Spay and Neutering, its not just for Animals....but in this case for the Heathens our Race is becoming.

Republicans are the Heathens of Today.

SGK has no money to give. This is the story.

Where did the money go & who has it? Are they doing a typical Wall Street deal, stealing the funds? Is the upper management group sucking the company dry & now they have nothing to give? Has Bain Capitol moved in?

You now need to give more to SGK to support the thieves @ the top. They don't care about Planned Parenthood or the mission. They only care about themselves.
