Japan: Fukushima Radioactive Leak Continues in Ocean
18 February 15
he Fukushima power plant in Japan is pouring growing amounts of radioactive water into the ocean, warned international nuclear authorities.
"The situation ... remains very complex, with the increasing amount of contaminated water posing a short-term challenge that must be resolved in a sustainable manner," stated the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its report Tuesday.
The Japanese plant has suffered from leaks since three reactors were damaged in March 2011 during a massive tsunami – which also killed over 20,000 people and devastated the coast. The Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), responsible for the repairs, has faced many difficulties and criticisms.
"The need to remove highly radioactive spent fuel, including damaged fuel and fuel debris, from the reactors that suffered meltdowns poses a huge long-term challenge," added the agency.
