Gingrich Film Slams Romney, Angers Republicans

By Reader Supported News

16 January 12

The video above, titled "When Mitt Romney Came to Town," was produced by a so-called "Super PAC" named "Winning Our Future." While Winning Our Future states on its website: "Not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee," they also go on to say, "Winning Our Future means nominating Former Speaker Newt Gingrich for President in 2012. And advancing that goal is what Winning Our Future is all about."

The backing for Winning Our Future appears to come in large part from Gingrich's friend and longtime associate, billionaire gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson. According to the New York Times, Adelson staked Winning Our Future with a $5 million war chest.

"When Mitt Romney Came to Town" appears to have been a component of Mr. Gingrich's strategy for defeating Mr. Romney for the Republican presidential nomination. However, Gingrich, under pressure from Republican power brokers to tone down the criticism, has now backed away from the film citing "inaccuracies" and saying, "I am calling on them to either edit out every single mistake or pull the entire film." -- RSN Staff your social media marketing partner

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Great film! It would fit right in on FSTV. Thanks Newt! Way to speak truth to a$$holes!

It has worked so well for so long: use other peoples' money to take from the many and give to themselves.
+18 # PhilO 2012-01-17 11:34
Martin Luther King said it best:
"[We have] socialism for the rich and rugged free market capitalism for the poor."

I don't think that we should be thanking Mitt for keeping the dream (more like a nightmare!!) alive.

I wonder if Rove could have done much better. After all didn't he write the book on all this ?
+13 # AndreM5 2012-01-17 10:06
NO! Rove most certainly did NOT write the book on these tactics, but he DID AND DOES plagiarize from the BOOK repeatedly. Rove is really not that smart, just bold for the back end of a barnyard animal.

We are so thankfull that the repugs make it a little easier for Obama to defeat them. They are doing a bang up job of revealing who they TRULY are.

When the contest starts between Obama and Romney, the nation will see what the REPUBLICANS really thinks about him, in living color and in their OWN words.
Nothing is made up, that is precious.

They certainly didn't get Reagan's message. Thank god.
They are the worst bunch of idiots seen in a long, long time. May they all go down in flames.....Soon

X Dane, Amen to that. They are a bunch of idiots with idiotic "ideas". All they want is control, but they don't know how to govern or do much else. I'm so glad they are showing us exactly what scum they are right now. They are master liars and take Dem comments out of context, just to name a few of the dirt they are capable of. I agree, the truth really bothers them when it comes home to roost. Yes, "May they all go down in flames ....Soon." They nearly destroyed this country already and now they want to finish us off and all the people with it. I wonder who or what they think they will govern?

Thing is they want to run the government like a business for a profit. In business one tries to make profit with the less amount of cost which means the least employees. You cannot do that with governments. What do you do fire the citizen? Which is what
RepubliCon's have been doing. Fire them no jobs no benefits, no healthcare. To RepubliCon's if you want that go someplace else. Move to Canada, Europe, South America. What we do not need in this country is a business man who looks only at the bottom line

XDane, The republicans have so much fuel for the fodder, its great to see them infighting like this, and outing each other, the end result will be that the republicans will rally around Romney anyway, and Obama will win by default... Sheldon Adelson bankrupted the contractors when he built the Venetian: He said he was out of money and forced them to accept pennies on what he owed them. Several went out of business because they lost so much money, But Adelson did just fine...he is worth about 23 billion and is the 8th wealthiest person in the US... but he couldn't pay his contractors!
+8 # John Locke 2012-01-17 11:14
Another interesting fact that is now coming into play, as the "wealthy" pit themselves against each other we have an opportunity to see just how they made their money, and the picture isn't very pretty. Adelson also hurt the little guy, the Middle Class contractors when he ripped them off for MILLIONS of Dollars...when he built the Venetian... I believe this is the recurrent picture we are going to see with this Elite class, a bunch of thieves... but it sure is good to see them spending money to out each other.. and they apparently see no problem making their money by theft, but see something wrong when someone else does the same thing... and lastly this says alot of the republican party when they are upset about Adelson outing Romeny, apparently the entire republican elite believe this is the normal way to make money...

I may be naive, but I don't understand why tea party and occupy wall street folk are not more anti Romney. How can a guy like that win the nomination in this climate of fry the banksters? He is one? Which is why he doesn't want to release his tax returns.
I understand why die hard rethugs only vote rethug, but if independents and non committed make up 20% of the population, how can they consider voting for him? I just don't get ithow the polls show Obama and Romney tied. Makes no sense to me. I guess Newt's attempt to expose Romney for the fraud he is just displays once again that rethugs don't want to be confused by any facts.

The best explanation I've seen about why people vote against there own interests was detailed in the book, "What's the Matter with Kansas."
+5 # rhgreen 2012-01-17 12:56
Another good explanation of why people vote against their own interests is in Joe Bageant's "Deer Hunting with Jesus".
+31 # LeeBlack 2012-01-16 23:52
The greed of Romney is the same greed of the 1% - the difference is Romney is running for national office and Gingrich's insider information.

George Romney was a hero to the auto workers when he saved American Motors. My dad even named his first Rambler "George" after him. Somewhere Mitt failed to understand what his father did when George embraced the Unions that provided the quality of labor that built good products, and earned the ample wages and security that went with union membership.

I imagine good ol' George, Mitt's dad, would be rolling in his grave at the behavior of his recalcitrant son.
+5 # rhgreen 2012-01-17 13:04
Mitt Romney came home from his Mormon mission to France, all upset by the "leftist" French who didn't want American-style capitalism, were against the Vietnam War, and were protesting in the streets against both. And his arrival home was a bit ruined by his discovery that his father, George, had turned against the Vietnam War. So Mitt coped with it by marrying a Mormon convert and going off to safe conservative isolation at Brigham Young University. (Early molding of the next president?)

Change the wording a little for each of them, and the film applies to all the Republican Candidates, including Gingrich. Thanks, Newt. You are doing our job for us. (Then, out in left field, we still see Paul, doin' his thang.)

The thing that keeps amazing me is how all the Repugnants can manage to totally ignore the outrageously important and equally obvious problem of Global Heating. (It is beyond what can be called "warming" any more). As the problems of crop failure due to drought, and loss of land, cities, and shipping facilities to ocean rise begin to cause mass migrations and mass hunger in ever greater parts of the world, we will look back at this election and this time and wonder "How could they have been so stupid?" "How could they have thought they could PROFIT from more coal and oil and natural gas? Wasn't it obvious to them that the atmosphere and ecology of the planet was collapsing right in front of their faces? Didn't disappearing Arctic sea ice and melting glaciers and growing deserts tell them anything?"

There are many calls for radical change, but in the US, the system is not easily changed from top down. We need to elect Representatives and Senators (State and National), and give Obama a second term with some serious support and guidance in Congress. We can change the whole government, including having third parties, if we start at the local level.
+11 # Jim Rocket 2012-01-17 11:11
They ignore AGW because they really don't care. They have enough money to ensure they will always have food and armed security. The fossil fuel industry is probably the most profitable one on the planet. How do you convince a junkie that heroin is bad for him?

Here in Canada our Bush/Cheney loving Prime Minister was shocked by the delay of the Keystone XL pipeline. Hearings are starting into a pipeline that would go from the tar sands to the Pacific coast - through the last intact temperate rainforest on earth! He's warning about the approval process being hi-jacked by "radical environmentalis ts backed by foreign money". He really means scientists. We're all in this together.
+1 # James38 2012-01-23 17:48
Obviously they have the money for guards and food, and that would probably let them survive till the end of their lives, but don’t they have children and grandchildren? That is what frightens me. They are either convinced of their own stupid ignorance of real science, and have no intention of actually studying the subject, or they absolutely don’t care about the future of their families. There doesn’t seem to be another possibility. If the Prime Minister says this, "warning about the approval process being hi-jacked by "radical environmentalis ts backed by foreign money" he should be forced to produce proof. Where is the money trail he must have seen in order to make the statement?

He is as much of a madman as Cheney, Bush, and the whole Tbagger mess thrown together. I had a higher opinion of Canada. Now I see that their ignorance is equal to or worse than the US, or there would be a huge public outcry against the whole Tar Sands fiasco, and against this psychopathic tyrannosaurus of a PM.

James, it truly boggles the mind that they refuse to see and understand what the climate change is doing to Mother Nature.
Do you remember a commercial some years ago, for a butter substitute??

Mother Nature got royally p...ed off and caused thunder and lightning.

That Mother Nature should be used in adds, showing some of the disasters already happening now. Unfortunately there are many.
The republicans and the corporations denying the Climate Change simply don't give a damn, that they are destroying the planet. Money is all that matters to them. May they rot in hell.
+1 # James38 2012-01-23 19:31
Hi X, No I never saw the commercial. Do you know of a link to it?

The thing that bothers me most about the Republican and other deniers, and corporations which (who?) want to profit on Global Warming is the children and grandchildren. They will look back on our era and wonder how we could have been so stupid.

If you have not yet, you will want to read (and get as many others to read as well):

"Storms of My Grandchildren" by Dr. James E Hansen, eminent climate scientist with NASA. Gives a splendid overview of climate science and the looming disasters. Hard science explained and made clear by a true master of this difficult subject.

"Fixing Climate" by Wallace Broecker and William Kunzig. Gives among other things a real appreciation of some of the few heroes of climate science - men and women who had the vision and courage to gather the data we needed to understand how the Earth works.

"The Vanishing Face of Gaia" by James Lovelock. The originator of Gaia theory, that shows that the Earth and its lifeforms form one living whole.

Europeans illegally invaded Turtle Island (North America) and destroyed the 'indigenous' (Latin = 'self-generatin g') system of Economic Democracy.
The Production Societies of First Nation communities were progressive ownership societies from youth to elder with everyone male and female owning their means of production in each specialized discipline.
With multihome housing (Longhouse = apartment + Pueblo = townhouse), individuals and families joined together in Economies of Scale with privacy but as well opportunities to economically interact among generations. Women's work and community services were joined collectively into Production Societies so that critical infant, elderly, handicapped and injured care was animated in a system of giving and receiving. 'Economy' from the Greek 'home' originally referred to the multihome as an economy of scale. With women and all stakeholders fully recognized in 'domestic' economy, then industry and commerce were subset economies always under supervision of universal ownership.
As owners specialized professionals grouped as 'caucuses' (Iroquois = 'grouping of like-interests' ) everyone developed their voice, their power and exercised decision-making in their area of expertise. Before imperial capitalism and socialism our indigenous ancestors from every continent joined together in ownership and Economic Democracy.

This film reveals the Mitt Romney's true character, but more importantly it reveals the brutal side of unregulated capitalism. The kind of capitalism that abhors real competition, has no social conscience, no heart, and no soul. The "free market" is a myth. The foundation of this nation is the idea of a free people. Corporations are not people. This is not Animal Farm. Some "animals" (citizens) are not "more equal" than others, do not have greater rights just because they are members of the lucky sperm club, and DO NOT have the right to engage in "creative destruction" for profit. And, frankly, I don't give a damn what Mitt Romney, the avaricious Koch brothers, the US Supreme Court, or the wingnuts in Republican Party say about it, full stop.
+7 # rockieball 2012-01-17 09:29
RepubliCon's just do not like to hear the truth, especially when it comes out of the mouth of another RepubliCon who is just as bad as the man he slams. They know that people listening and hearing them, that in the end the voter will say, "Why should I vote for any of these people." That is when the RepubliCon's kick up the action to prevent people from voting and one will hear the campaigns of why vote at all.
+6 # jhosay 2012-01-17 09:33
No one should be shocked by this - this is how modern Capitalism works. It's not just Romney or Bain - these same tactics are used by many corporations. Newt or any of the other Republican candidates would continue to give big government handouts to corps like Bain. If Romney wants to run the country he shouldn't try to become President of the United States - he should just stay where he is. If he becomes the President, he would move to a position where he would have much less influence on the federal government - what an idiot!
+9 # shortonfaith 2012-01-17 10:18
What kind of a group would even put someone like this up for the position of President of the United States? If folks like Cheney, Romney & Bush are the best the Republicans have to pick from, it's understandable why good people don't want to join & be a part. Every one of the Republican hopefuls should be in jail, locked up as true 3 strike criminals in society. They've all cost the American taxpayer much more than they given.

Listen up you drug addicts & murderers, white collar crime gets you a chance at being the president.

Give to OWS & the 99% in your area. Not another dime to these thieves.

I dunno if this even belongs on RSN as a worthy item which will be carried ad-nauseum on the major owner-media (who delight in this kind of infantile soap opera schmuk).
I mean, let these hacks cut and thrust at each other until they are all bleeding terminally, the wounds infected with their own bile and let their patsies on the networks carry it.
It seems to me that the job of those of us who deem ourselves progressive, however you care to categorize yourselves, is to make it clear to Ob' that he needs to start supporting the progressive stances he ran on if he wants our support for a second term, and do more than just try and raise a billion $ to impress us to be worthy of the leadership he still seems to want.
Y'all know what your favorite causes are: mine tend towards making the military-indust rial death machine and culture a true department of defense/peace for good works and diverting funds and huge resources into R.&D. of renewable and clean energy for the future and good of the planet restored and modernized infrastructure (Jobs) and a true health care system for everybody.
That's the last thing these battlin', overfunded babies want, so let's leave them where they belong -in the infotainment media between commercials- and stick to getting out the true message of progressive change and hold the current president's feet to the fire of change by solidarity in critical mass, clear messaging and "Occupy".

This film is Democracy's and Decency's Academy Award winner of the times. And I'm going to add something else for you to think about....the Democratic Party would not produce this, despite its incredible call to justice. And on another related topic, Mr. Obama has just proposed a move affecting the SBA, that will ultimately gut and rid of the Big Business is jumping for joy. Please inform yourselves of this incomprehensibl e action by Mr. Obama and ask yourselves....w hy? None of this is Winning our Future, rather destroying our future.

American Psychopathocrac y will prevail! It, they, will be able to do so because Americans will continue to vote with ballots. It should have been obvious to us all a generation ago that the ballot had become obsolete in America because it makes no difference who is elected, the result is the same. Even if BHO wanted to be different, he knows in his heart he would be killed, physically murdered, if he tried to be different. He is a figurehead whose policy is handed to him, as was bush and the others before him. All of the rest of the 'politics' in America is THEATER. American Psychopathocrac y will prevail! It is a strong system, growing from 1913 to hold our People in the palm of its hand and using us to conquer the world, and us. It is time to say NO! To just say No! We cannot confront them physically as OWS suggests. They will eventually have the Marines in the streets and we will be Mosul. But, we do have them by the balls if we want to. WE HAVE THE MONEY. It ALL comes from us. If we did not pay ANYTHING for ONE month, what effect on the elite? Abuse? TWO months. As a NATION. OWS, but with our wallets. But it must be all of us together. We have the power to STRANGLE them, immune from their pepper spray and, ultimately, bullets. They will crash with no cash flow. No corporate bill pay, no purchases from corporations, no 'INVESTING'. A money strike. The ultimate (and only) WEAPON is in our hands but we must wield it as ONE People, or, American Psycopathocracy will prevail!

If I didn't know differently, I would have thought that this film was produced by Democrats who wanted to show that Mitt was unfit for the Presidency, but knowing that it was sponsored by Newt, makes me believe that there is no honor amongst thieves. I think it should be used like the way the Swift boat campaign was used against Kerry. I hope it goes viral. Apparently some of the 1% must hate their fellow citizens. Why would they rob profitable businesses for their own well-being?

Most posters here obviously get the jist of Gingrich's "principled condemnation" of Romney. As alluded to in earlier posts, let these Repub parasites stab each other in the back. Romney has nothing over Obama who has just appointed Jeffrey Zeints to be the head of the Office of Budget and Management. Zeints is a former executive of Bain Capital and a former colleage of Romeny.

I have to say, Obama has the worst judgment is his appointments of any president. Bush cannot be counted because Cheney ran his government and Cheney was a pyshopath. Obama is credited with being smart, a constitutional lawyer, a democrat, and a progressive. He should know better. But he doesn't. He's thinking of appointing Larry Summers as president of the World Bank. Summers should be in jail. Summers is one of the most corrupt human beings on earth. Make him the head of the World Bank! People criticize rappers for showing off their bling and flashing their money around, but here's Romney and his Wall Street thugs doing the same thing. The picture of them all holding up their money with some of them holding bills between their teeth is pathetic. The only difference is they wear suits.
