Bobbie Rose finds S.C. voter identification ruling ‘deeply disturbing’

A U.S. District Court ruled Wednesday that South Carolina’s proposed Voter ID law will be allowed, but can’t go into effect for this year’s general election.

Bobbie Rose, Democratic candidate for the state’s 1st Congressional District, offers the following statement on this ruling:

“While I’m glad the ruling won’t affect voters this year, it’s still deeply disturbing how much of an obstacle this creates for South Carolina voters in the future, especially seniors.

“Once you’re 65, you don’t need to renew a license after it expires unless you’re still driving. Banks and even courts still have to accept those IDs, too. Those seniors must now have their IDs renewed, though, and will even face costs of acquiring the documentation needed to prove their identity. That’s the equivalent of a poll tax.

It negatively affects younger voters, too. For example, less than two-thirds of 18-year-olds have a license, and their student IDs won’t be acceptable when they want to vote or register to vote.

Minority voters will be disproportionately affected, too.”

Rose’s opponent Rep. Tim Scott has openly supported Voter ID requirements, claiming opposition to the restrictions are “more political theater than anything” in a recent interview.

On number of voters/minority voters affected:

http://www.thenation.com/blog/169572/discriminatory-south-carolina-voter-id-law-challenged-federal-court-updated# 239,333 registered SC voters without ID; 81,938 (or 34.2%) are minorities.

Non-white minorities are only 30.4% of all voters in the state, however: 829,626 of 2,730,651 registered voters as of January 15, 2012, according to the State Election Commission. http://www.scvotes.org/2010/05/13/fact_sheets
