Pelosi Promises to Unleash All the 9 Inch Plastic Arrows With Little Red Suction Cups In the Democrats’ Quiver, If Necessary

Today George Stephanopoulos asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi if the House would pursue impeachment proceedings against President Trump and Attorney General Barr if Republicans attempt to quickly fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the recent passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Pelosi responded, “We have our options, we have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now.  But the fact is, we have a big challenge in our country.  This president has threatened to not even accept the results of the election with statements that he and his henchmen have made.  So right now, our main goal would be to protect the integrity of the election as we protect the American people from the coronavirus.”

Pelosi seems to be saying that Democrats have other more pressing concerns than a possible decades-long 6-3 Republican majority on the Supreme Court, but she also introduces the metaphor of a Democratic quiver of arrows, which seems to suggest a threat, though with not too much conviction behind it.

When pressed again by Stephanopoulos to say whether House Democrats would “rule anything out” in their response to Republican attempts to seat a sixth Republican Supreme Court  during what remains of the 116th Congress, Pelosi said, “We have a responsibility, we take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.  We have a responsibility to meet the needs of the American people.  When we weigh the equities of protecting our democracy, requires us to use every arrow in our quiver.”  Again, the quiver of arrows metaphor.

It is not clear whether Pelosi’s apparent difficulty with speaking plain English is on purpose, to ensure that her words never present a stationary target, or if she really is unable to articulate her thoughts.  Anyway, the overall impression conveyed in Pelosi’s references to a Democratic quiver of arrows is that Republicans will never have to be concerned about these arrows–of one ever hitting a target, or of having any effect if it did.  What may have been intended to reassure Democratic voters that House Democrats are on the job and will defend American democracy, is unlikely to give confidence to many Americans that this will turn out to be the case.  But worse, ambiguous threats such as this  show no commitment on the part of Democrats to do what must be done, and will be read by Republicans as a message that Democrats have not learned how to play the new game unveiled in our political travails of the past almost four years, and as an invitation to Republicans to do what they will.
