SHIPWRECKED

A Wave crashes with centrifugal force and the call for “All hands-on Deck” fill the air.  Fear drowns out the sounds of hope and chaos rings in one’s ear.  There is a feeling of hopelessness and anger simultaneously.  We are tossed about for what it seems an interminable time and are finally dumped on the shore of a strange land.   A land different, and yet the same appears for survivors who are dazed as they peer out each morning and very night through the sands of time.   A landscape that looks familiar and yet now   feels so foreign to our soul.  Our instincts pushed by an adrenaline rush tell us we must fight to survive but as we survey the rubble our thoughts remind us; The Game has Changed.

A journey (with every day more like lemmings racing to a cliff) that began the day Donald Trump announced he would run for president and continued when one of the two major parties of this nation used his candidacy and in the last 18 months, his presidency, as a vessel to get from one political point on their agenda to another.  Over the course of this quest for power the ship became a battering ram against our democracy.

The phrase the means justify the ends was never more telling in the times we live.  Many people today see the Trump administration and his party as heroes, his evangelical base will compare him to a savior they pray to.  Those who don’t abide with this interpretation feel shipwrecked on an island that feels like its taking on more water every day.

What more than a few cable news conservative and liberal commentators often neglect as they rattle on about one of the many actions or policies taken by the ruling party is they are seeing effects through a porthole.  It is not one policy or one law that leaves most of this nation stranded.  A man (or women) without a country.  It is the entirety of our collective conscious being moved towards acceptance of the insatiable behavior of cruelty and unethical notion that this is business as usual.

With each rule broken or norm washed away for political expediency, a sea change becomes a tsunami.  There can be no doubt that most Trump supporter reading these words or being presented with statistics that could easily refute the words of Trump and his co-opted party would dismiss rationality with a convulsion of convolutedness. The cacophony of Trump lies crashing into their sub-conscious.

Last week July 4th is celebrated as the day of our independence from what Americans in 1776 believed was tyrannical rule from abroad.  The unrelenting irony is in 2018 the autocratic leader in the oval office as much more in common with King George III then the founding fathers of democracy.  Like an absolute ruler whose desire to be obeyed and adored with equal intenseness feels the iconic statement that all men are created equal and deserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is as relevant today as the Christians (who support him) adhere to the teachings of Jesus.  The ideals that precipitated the grand experiment “Democracy” fall with silence as the proverbial tree in a forest.

Children (non-white) in cages and   black men and women held to the opposite of innocent until proven guilty.  Playing footsy with foreign dictators while wanting to give the boot to our democratic friends.  And employing the “art” of lying as a manuscript to govern a nation as a reality television show, our commitment to freedom and social justice lays tattered like sails strewn on a beach after a violent storm.  Our beliefs are challenged with disturbing regularity.

Once they set sail for a New World with the promise of a better life.  Freedom of speech and thought without the religious dogma that haunted Europe for centuries.  Today that promise is sinking in the deep waters of stagnation that will diminish all of us.
