Hungry Children Eating Too Much for Republicans to Allow

Most agree that the wealthiest and most powerful nation on the face of the earth, and in history, should provide a sliver of profit from the relentless exploitation of the resources of the planet, to feed anyone in the country who may be hungry. To pay for this duty, gift, handout, or however the politicians wish to characterize it, we use taxes. This task of relieving true suffering should be the minimum our government can accomplish, not a bargaining chip in a cheap contest of gamesmanship between two parties vying for power.

Most agree also that we will survive and prosper best by steady growth and by avoiding the opposite. One popular idea to stimulate growth is to reduce the size of government. The most popular proposal to cut the size of government is by eliminating burdensome government regulation, particularly environmental regulations. Some call for the elimination or gutting of laws that restrict the scope and freedom of America’s corporations and businesses, large and small. The proponents of such cuts claim that this action alone would fire the starting gun to release the long oppressed and long compressed potential of the true blue American spirit. This potential, they claim, defines American exceptionalism. Although not part of the argument, cutting benefits to the hungry is one of the things that always happens when government (taxes) are cut. Benefits are cut. The people who suffer most from such cutting are already under extreme pressure after surviving five years of recession. Their prospects for relief are even bleaker following decades of disproportionate shifting of the burden of paying taxes away from the richest Americans down to the declining ranks of the middle class.

We now know that for years, the "benefits" from cutting taxes have been winding up in the pockets of people who are already rich. I do not want my share of taxes cut that should be going to feed hungry children before this imbalance is fixed.
