Every August 6 and 9th a grim omen is commemorated where human-kind lost its naivety that human life is almost inherently permanent. With the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the human race faced the possibility that unless we learn peace we could end up destroying ourselves. However if humans survive it will also be because we learn in time to be more cautious. July 25, 1945, some soldiers and scientists were taking macabre bets. Would the first nuclear explosion be a dude, work as planned or destroy Nevada or consume the entire atmosphere?

The same discussion occurred with the hydrogen bomb. And now with the Large Hadron Collider. Sooner or later unless humans become both more peaceful and also more cautious something will endanger life itself.

There is another horror story. History books condemn Germany for invading neutral Belgium just to get easy access to France. The US seized the Bikini Atoll from the natives placing then on an Island without good fishing leaving them starving for a while, in tents next to a US military base as planes took, off for a while. And during a latter period in somewhat comfortable surroundings that still left many with the hope of returning home someday. On November 1, 1954 scientists got inpatient waiting for good weather (Oct 31 by some time zones) blowing a radiative cloud over the former inhabitants. Those who at one point went home for a while before being removed again because it was unsafe were dosed with a second dose of radiation.

It’s interesting that there was some fear that nitrogen and oxygen could be nuclear fuel but no speculation ahead of time that lithium 7 would become nuclear fuel.

There was a time when Holocaust remembrances were only about Jews, and didn’t include the Gays and Gypsies. Future nuclear remembrances need to include the way the former residence of Bikini Island were mistreated and exposed to radiation.

Black holes are the current fear. Naturally occurring micro black holes normally travel at the speed of light going through stars as if they were glass balls. If produced by the collider they might continue forward at slower collider speed, and in the path of the sun could cause the sun to eventually wink out with no proof that easy access to other stars at beyond the speed of light is as all possible. It is possible that two beams colliding in opposite directions might instead produce something close to being still. Only exploding holes are detectable with current instruments. The collder could be producing millions of them without detection. And it’s conceivable that there is one or more already at the center of earth, before scientists may be unknowingly producing many more. Car tires and tornadoes wobble self-destructively if a big rock gets stuck in the rim or a tall building in the way of a tornado. If however they are unstable, the very cold temperature of the liquid helium coolant could make them more stable, and less wobble in consuming the simple helium atom.

Conceivable Dark Matter and Dark Energy is micro holes with less diameter than a wave length of light and sheared off bits of charged article falling into it. If a dust particle was squeezed enough, the gravity at the center would be overwhelming but at the distance that was the edge of the dust particle, no additional gravity would be present. Astronomers once relied on epicycles that got more complicated as new observances were added. Then understanding the earth spinning, with the earth circling the sun made the epicycle theory suddenly seem ridiculous. If dark matter and energy and Hawkins radiation doesn’t exist, the safety estimates are not accurate.

If they turn out safe, future generations are very unlikely to cheer the lack of caution in today’s
science.

Perhaps I’m being out of order to add the subject of causal criminal risk to the remembrances of intentional harm. But clearly the people of the islands thrown off their land and exposed to radiation simply because they resisted less than if other areas of the planet were seized for testing purposes, belong in nuclear remembrances as much a gypsies do in Holocaust remembrances.
