OMG, GMO, WTF! March Against Monsanto San Francisco

On Saturday, May 25, 2013, San Francisco joined with huge enthusiasm and numbers the 436 American cities and 250 countries marching in a global day of action against the devastation to the world's food supply and to human health from Monsanto's genetically modified organisms [GMOs] and its weed and plant killer, Round Up.

Event organizers, Eric Holt and Monica Lopez, filled two stages with musicians, poets, and experts who addressed the crowd on food justice, organics, pesticides, herbicides, the future of food, and the dangers to the food system from power concentrated in six corporate giants – DuPont, Syngenta, Dow, Bayer, BASF, and Monsanto.

The event began at Union Square with speakers followed by a march down Market Street to a staging area at Justin Herman Plaza near the Ferry Building on the Bay.

As in cities nationwide, a forest of clever and creative signs waved over streams of chanting heads. One stated in large letters: 'Monsanto has been removed and banned by Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Luxemburg, Japan, Madeira, Peru, New Zealand, France, South Australia, Russian, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, and Switzerland. Why Not The United States of America? Why Us? Why Not Here?'

My favorite: OMG / GMO / WTF!

All ages and types were represented --- babies in strollers, kids on Dads' shoulders, high school and college students, vets, grandfathers and mothers, most notably, Pamm Larry, instigator of Prop 37 to label GMOs in California.

Through this video, let me share with you the surprising knowledge about the dangers of genetically modified organisms articulated by strangers and friends I interviewed at random in the crowd. Enjoy the beats pumped out by rapper, Khafre Jay, and the final speakers.

I was especially impressed by the insights of Ari (19) and Christy (20) who the night before the march created an amazingly informative three-dimensional sign. Take a look, and you'll see what I mean.
