Prop 37 Still Ahead Despite Pesticide Firms’ Attack Ads, LA Times Poll Finds

Oakland -- Proposition 37 is leading likely California voters by 44%-42%, according to a Los Angeles Times poll released today. If approved, the ballot initiative would require labeling of genetically engineered food in the state of California.

Since Oct. 1, supporters of Prop 37 have withstood nearly $1 million per day of negative deceptive advertising from the pesticide and junk food industries. The opposition ads have been called misleading by fact checkers at the San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento Bee.

“This poll is a testament to the powerful grassroots support for right to know what’s in our food, and the limited influence of false ads,” said Stacy Malkan, media director of Yes on 37 California Right to Know campaign. “Despite three weeks of constantly hammering California voters with deceptive ads, the pesticide companies have failed to pull ahead.”

“This is ours to win. Our polls show that when people see our messages – that we have a right to know what’s in the food we’re eating and feeding our families -- our numbers go back up. That will be the story of the final days of this campaign.”

Proposition 37 is endorsed by a broad coalition of consumer, religious, environmental, farmer and health organizations, such as the California Nurses Association, California Labor Federation, American Public Health Association, United Farm Workers, Consumers Union, California Council of Churches IMPACT, Sierra Club, National Resources Defense Council, Consumer Federation of America, Breast Cancer Fund, Public Citizen and many others.

The opposition has raised more than $40 million from the largest pesticide and junk food companies in the world, most of which are based outside of California.

The story of Proposition 37 has received widespread national press attention. See Atlantic story, "Can Campaign Ads Convince Voters Not to Care What’s in Their Food?”
