The most important event in my Spiritual life occurred on a white water canoe trip on the Wolf River in Wisconsin, in 1972. Saving a child’s life then, totally changed mine.
Back then, I was shy and a total introvert(hard to believe, I know). I even had a duodenal ulcer then. There were 4 couples on our trip, so we joked a lot about the movie DELIVERANCE. The 3-day camping trip ended at the edge of a huge whirlpool.
We had parked our canoes, so I was on foot looking at the extraordinary whirlpool. Suddenly a young boy, sliding on the wet rocks, went too far. He slid right into the heart of the whirlpool and was immediately sucked out of sight. What I saw last, were his arms flailing and terror on his face.
Fortunately, I grew up swimming on a river with lots of whirlpools. So I knew there was only one way to swim out of a large whirlpool. You must totally surrender to the current that is pulling you down(just like you must surrender to the Absolute, God in your life). Then you must be very patient until your feet hit bottom, so you can push yourself outward. Centrifugal force will then spin you out of the whirlpool.
I jumped right in, but I could not see in the iron-colored water. So I felt around with my hands, as I was being pulled down. I grabbed his sweatshirt and pulled both of us down even more. When I hit bottom with my feet, I pushed off as hard as I could to the side. Quickly we were free; it all happened so fast, that the 6-year-old boy did not even get water in his lungs.
I carried him up to his sobbing parents. As I handed the boy to his father, THEY BOTH HAD A LOOK IN THEIR EYES THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET! It was a look of gratitude, but it was 1000 times stronger than normal. That made me high as a kite with no drugs at all.
Since then, I have wanted and looked for that kind of natural high over and over again during my life!
From that moment on, I wanted to spend the rest of my life saving other people. I fully intend on helping save humanity from itself.
