hile I was in the path of Sandy, I experienced nothing like New York and New Jersey. A section of our fence blew down and we lost power for about four hours. I live in Washington DC, and we were prepared for worse but were spared the carnage that Sandy left in its wake further north.
My housemates and I held an early Thanksgiving dinner for someone who was returning home to France. We wanted him to experience an American Thanksgiving before he left. I now wonder what Thanksgiving in New York and New Jersey would be like this year if Mitt Romney were president and not Barack Obama.
It is in times of crisis that leaders are truly tested. We saw during Katrina that the wrong leaders can make a bad situation worse. This time around it was not only the president's leadership, but also state and local officials in New York and New Jersey that out-performed their counterparts' response to Katrina.
Yes, Katrina prepared us for Sandy, many lessons were learned, but we have to ask, would Mitt Romney have been prepared?
We can take Mitt at his word ...

Imagine if Mitt Romney had been President these past four years and eliminated FEMA ... that's what I hear him saying in the debate. He wasn't talking about cutting FEMA, he thought it was 'immoral' to continue to have the Federal government aid states with disaster relief.
Imagine a President Romney phone call to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie following Sandy:
"Hey Chris ... I have the utmost confidence in your ability to pick up the pieces. I told the Commander at Fort Dix to help you in any way he can. I could send in some FBI or customs agents to stop the looting, but that's about all the resources I have since we made our historic budget cuts. You know after lowering our taxes there is just so much we can do, but the good news is the 'Donald' and your other friends have more money to give to the Red Cross ... Do you need me to make some calls and see if they can give you more assistance? Too bad Libby Dole isn't there anymore.
What's that Governor? You want me to shove my phone where?"
I am not a fan of many things President Obama has done, but one thing we do know is that he cares about health and welfare of the American People, while Mr. Romney only cares about the bottom line for his shareholders.
Scott Galindez attended Syracuse University, where he first became politically active. The writings of El Salvador's slain archbishop Oscar Romero and the on-campus South Africa divestment movement converted him from a Reagan supporter to an activist for Peace and Justice. Over the years he has been influenced by the likes of Philip Berrigan, William Thomas, Mitch Snyder, Don White, Lisa Fithian, and Paul Wellstone. Scott met Marc Ash while organizing counterinaugural events after George W. Bush's first stolen election. Scott will be spending a year covering the presidential election from Iowa.
