We Bought Insulin in Canada for 10 Percent of What It Costs in the United States

By Bernie Sanders, Bernie 2020

isters, Brothers, and Friends -

Today I took people with diabetes across the border from Detroit to Canada to buy insulin — medication they need to survive.

In the United States, a single vial of insulin costs on average $340. But in Canada, the same exact drug is just $30.

Why? Because the United States is the only major country on earth that lets drug companies charge whatever they want.

One in four people with diabetes ration their insulin because it is so expensive. That means American people die because of corporate greed.

So I took people with diabetes to a pharmacy in Windsor, Ontario — just a 20 minute drive from Detroit — to buy the drugs they need to survive.

While we were there, people were able to buy the same drugs at one-tenth of the cost. One family from Indiana told me in the pharmacy that they skip paying their electric bill in order to pay for their son’s insulin. They paid $1,000 today for six months of insulin. It would have cost them $10,000 in the United States.

We have to ask ourselves why this is possible. And it is because of two factors: the greed of the pharmaceutical manufacturers, and the fact that these companies buy off politicians who will protect their greed.

These lower prices are possible in Canada because that country negotiates drug prices with drug companies. They have the common sense to say that drug company profits are not more important than the lives of their citizens.

The United States must negotiate for lower drug prices, and it must allow cheaper drugs to be imported from other countries.

Our job now is to end the incredible corruption and greed in the pharmaceutical industry.

Sign my petition — tell Congress you believe the government should negotiate with drugmakers for lower prices and allow for the importation of less expensive but safe and affordable drugs from other countries.

When we are in the White House, we will take on Big Pharma and we will win. Thank you for being a part of this.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

ONLY Bernie would do this and it's not the first time. Say what you will about him but he's the ONLY one who'll go to the mat and fight for us!
Maybe you don't agree with all his positions but what good are the other candidates if they won't fight for you?
Think he's too left? Brainwashed by Fox and fascism. The Moderate Middle doesn't exist anymore so stop kidding yourself and brace for impact.

Insulin like a lot of very necessary drugs were developed about 100 years ago. There is no patent on insulin. Anyone can make it and sell it. It should be very cheap. But the big pharmaceutical companies control the market for drugs. If they don't make it, the drug cannot be sold in the US. The big pharmas divide up the market among themselves. Now that is COLLUSION in the legal sense of the term. Where is Bob Mueller when there is real collusion going on and it is interfering with American's health and society. Oh, I know. "Out of my purview."

Come on #RR, Mueller is on the sidelines and those of your your precious Russian election meddlers who didn't get caught by Mueller are now safe to continue their work on Trump's (and Putin's) behalf.

All in all, you should be delighted.

As a Canadian I'm happy these people got affordable insulin.. however Canada has the SECOND highest drug prices in the world so we're better but not actually that efficient at driving down prices. The latest iteration of NAFTA extends drug patents.. making drugs even more unaffordable for both Americans and Canadians. Reminds me of Michael Moores film "Sicko" where he went to Cuba and bought drugs for literally pennies on the dollar.. Bernie should go there next time! Definitely time to control corporate profit making that costs lives.

Go, Bernie! I'm so happy that you've not been bought!

You continue to be bright light in today's dark days.

I watched the first leg of the democratic debates last night and this issue came up. It was very discouraging how confused the discussion of healthcare and medicare for all became. Mostly this was Take Japper's intention by always phrasing it "medicare for all will force 160 million people to give up the private healthcare that they really like." No one seemed to understand that "the healthcare that people really like" is costing them sometimes $1000s per month for common drugs.

Really only two people were steadfast supporters of a single payer system: Sanders and Warren. All the rest wanted to keep the for-profit corporations involved in health. They don't seem to understand that the corporations are making universal healthcare unaffordable.
