Ilhan Omar Is a Leader With Strength and Courage

By Bernie Sanders, Bernie 2020

19 July 19

ast night, I was at dinner with Ilhan Omar, her daughter, and some other members of Congress when we heard the news that thousands of people at a Donald Trump rally were chanting "send her back."

To my surprise, Ilhan was pretty unfazed. Sadly, as she told me, she has been dealing with this kind of hatred and racism for a long time.

And she knows, as we do, that Trump is a demagogue doing what he does best: dividing and conquering through hate.

No. Trump won't talk about trying to throw 32 million Americans off their health care. He won't talk about his massive tax breaks for billionaires. He won't talk about his budget which called for huge cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. And he certainly won't talk about how climate change is destroying the planet.

But he will try to divide the country up based on the color of our skin, our religion, where we were born or our sexual orientation.

Brothers and sisters: Now is the time, more than at any other moment in our lifetimes, to say NO to racism, NO to divisiveness, NO to the hatred that Trump is trying to foment.

Ilhan Omar is a leader with strength and courage. She won’t back down to Trump’s racism and hate, and neither will we.

Ilhan and I have worked together on a number of important issues since she was elected – most recently our effort to cancel all student debt in this country.

She is a critical voice in our fight for justice in America, and I am excited to work with her and other progressives when we are in the White House.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Sanders and Omar are both tough and committed.. They will stand up to Trump and his imbecilic base and his network of corporate sponsors. With the GOP it is always a matter of money; with Sanders and Omar it is a question of help for the lower and middle classes. Which do you prefer?

Posted an article from The Nation on Facebook today because it was a history lesson on how we got here.

I am ALL in with Sanders, Warren and the four strong women in Congress.
Trump throws red meat to his base and diverts attention from the border, tax cuts, deregulation, etc. etc.

When you go through what Ms. Omar has gone through, some little piss ant in the WH throwing insults at you isn't a big deal. The way to deal with piss ants is to step on them.

Democratic leadership, and especially Nancy are doing everything they can to demonize and castigate AOC, Omar and the other "Squad" members. They are the FUTURE of the party IF we are to end the control BIG MONEY has on its leadership. It's easier to condemn the "upstarts" and then BLAME THEM when the election is once again handed to Trump. I just watched "Shock and Awe" and once again became angry at the so-called "liberal press" who, for the most part swallowed the government report on "WMD's" in Iraq hook line and sinker. Today, it's "We can't afford Medicare for All;it will never work." We have become "Government OF the RICH, BY the RICH and FOR the RICH." We receive the very few crumbs left over.

Nice comforting sermon for the choir. Now how do we persuade 10-15 percent of these people that everything their idol is telling them about Ms. Omar is a lie, to say nothing of all of the other lies he tells?

They are not imbeciles by any means (people with extremely low mental capacity), but ignoramuses, who have been fed little BUT lies all their lives: at home, from the MSM, at school (which people who should have known better have allowed to be hijacked by Christian extremists), and in Sunday School, where the same lies have been repeated for generations. If a person tells a falsehood that s/he believes, for whatever reason, to be true, is it a lie? I say not; just false gossip.

The so-called "Enlightenment" of the 18th century, besides not being nearly as enlightened as it was billed (though with some stunning triumphs that gave us steam engines and eventually plastic without explanations of the downsides), never made it down to the hoi polloi, even though I can attest to some excellent schools for some of the rising middle class of the 1950s-60s propelled by the GI Bill. It didn't last.

The only way this brief story is going to be heard by anyone who doesn't already know it is if tens of thousands of people send it to the suits in the headquarters of every MSM organization in the country and dare them to air it. Perhaps we should try that.

The usual hystrionic reaction from the 'Touchy Left' .. they are in the government .. they are ripe for criticism as they all are ... critical debate of this woman's view on Israel is in the fore .. Palestinian 'leader' pre WWII turned down the best deal for P .. he back Hitler . was anti Jew .. long as they lob rockets and blow people up .. things will not change for the better .. calling comments by T as racist is an avoidance of the bad politics of these four ..

Are you unwell? This is completely incoherent. I think you need to see a doctor.

Congresswoman Omar is just the sort of person this 83-year-old Navy vet woman longs to vote for, and see re-elected in the same election as the one Bernie wins for the presidency!

I think we should all flip what the Unpresidented Unpresident is yelling. Definitely "SEND HER BACK -- TO CONGRESS!" That can become her campaign motto!

As for Pelosi, do what I do when I get one of those money pleading fake surveys from the Dum-o-crat Establishmentar ians, I write nastygrams all over it, single out some of the worst like Pelosi, Schumer and Hoyer, and send it back, since it's their postage, not mine. As for money: NEVER!! Don't throw these Joker surveys away. Make good use of them to tell their office clerks YOUR point of view.

I've had a couple of busy years so have quite a pile of those. Marked one up and sent it yesterday; many more to come. I suspect those "surveys" are untouched by human eyeballs (especially those that the machine can't read), but they're mostly harmless, fun to do, and cost them a couple of bucks apiece all up.

The Democrats are mostly trying to fight clean and don't need borderline hate, Nancy if far from perfect but an angle when compared to Trump

The lesser of two evils is still evil. Good need not be entirely out of reach unless we allow it to be.
