Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

By Elizabeth Warren, TIME

17 April 19

he year 2008 was a reckoning. While millions of Americans lost their livelihoods to Wall Street’s greed, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost her dad to lung cancer, and her family fell off a financial cliff. She watched as our government bailed out Wall Street while it ignored families like hers. She learned the hard way that in America today, Washington protects the powerful while leaving hardworking people behind.

Her commitment to putting power in the hands of the people is forged in fire. Coming from a family in crisis and graduating from school with a mountain of debt, she fought back against a rigged system and emerged as a fearless leader in a movement committed to demonstrating what an economy, a planet and a government that works for everyone should look like.

A year ago, she was taking orders across a bar. Today, millions are taking cues from her. She reminds all of us that even while greed and corruption slow our progress, even while armies of lobbyists swarm Washington, in our democracy, true power still rests with the people. And she’s just getting started.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

AOC we need you and you are long overdue. Republican monsters have invaded our land and hold the poor hostage. They are in a word, obnoxious. Help us, please!

As much as she wishes people wouldn't make her into a hero (or a villain), she is too much of a stand-out for media to not do one or the other.

Read her own words sometime. We are lucky to have her where she is, but the miracle is that she is trying to stand fast with her essential humanity while living in the spotlight 24/7.

Try not to put her on such a pedestal that she can't possibly live up to the expectations. I just hope she survives, as a Congresswoman, and as a wife and human being. All three are tough jobs.

Such gracious and heartfelt words of admiration from Elizabeth Warren for AOC.
Nancy Pelosi should come after class to EW's office for lessons.

Yes, the whole groups of young, passionate, progressives like AOC is really inspiring. Warren is right to note that their politics comes out of their life experiences. This is even more true for Ilhan Omar. They are not "academic politicians" who came into politics via elite universities, internships with political masters, and sponsorship by the DNC or a leader like Pelosi.

I say Pelosi in an interview denigrating these new progressive in congress. She said there are just five or six and they are unimportant. Pelosi went on to say she is the true progressive. This just shows how out of touch Pelosi is.

OFF TOPIC -- RSN has posted an unusual number of really desperate calls for contributions. I'm sure finances are tough. Most websites are in the same mode. I contribute irregularly. Obviously, I like RSN, or at least some parts of it. It used to be a good source for the best of the independent/pro gressive media. Now its selection of articles is really abysmal. No one needs the spin coming from the NYT, WashPo, Guardian, Lawfare, ThinkProgress, and the like. They are like Pelosi-Progress ives. And the censorship policies are offensive. Usually, I don't contribute after I have been censored, which happens fairly often.

Just a suggestion -- change a few policies and the contributions to RSN will go up. The best part of RSN is the commenters. The best part should be the article selection and the free speech policies.

Charismatic leaders are always needed to effect change. Unfortunately, we humans are not particularly rational, ergo Trump. In spite of our pretensions, we are driven by emotional and psychological needs, ergo Trump. So when charismatic leaders like Sanders and Warren and Ocasio-Cortez arise, we are blessed, because their hearts are in the right place. Great leaders usually recognize the need and assume the leadership role reluctantly, because they recognize their all-too human flaws. I think that Elizabeth Warren's acknowledgment and support of her colleague bodes well.

Alexandria *Ocasio*-Cortez is one of this aging white gay guy's real heroes, along with Ilhan Omar, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders.

They are the vanguard of the resurgent Progressive or Left Wing of the democratic party. We've all be looking for them in these last 30 years of wandering in the wilderness of center right wing democrat control. This is a great moment. We have not "won" yet, but the Progressive or Left Wing movement is gaining in strength and numbers.
