You Can Count Me as a NO Vote

By Elizabeth Warren, Reader Supported News

10 July 18

t's official: Donald Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

You can count me as a NO vote.

We already knew that Trump’s nominee would come from a list pre-screened by right-wing extremists, so make no mistake: Brett Kavanaugh was chosen because conservatives are confident that he would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Brett Kavanaugh's record as a judge and lawyer is crystal clear, and he would do even more damage on the Supreme Court:

He opposed letting a young immigrant woman get prompt access to a legal abortion, and he's argued that sitting Presidents should be exempt from lawsuits and criminal investigations or prosecution while in office – wouldn't Donald Trump love that?

And if that's not enough, get this: He believes that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is unconstitutional, he tried to strike down net neutrality, and he's worked to make it harder for federal watchdogs to hold corporate criminals accountable and protect public health, safety, and economic security.

The stakes couldn’t be higher – women’s rights to control our own bodies, the right to live free from discrimination because of what you look like, what you believe, or who you love, workers’ rights to organize for better pay and benefits, and health care (including protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions).

It’s clear: Brett Kavanaugh would make the far right’s dreams come true. He would cozy up to giant corporations while ripping away our basic rights.

But remember: Donald Trump is NOT king. He can’t just snap his fingers and put someone on the Supreme Court all by himself – he needs to go through the United States Senate first.

And if you and I have anything to say about it, he’s in for a real fight.

He’s made his move – and now it’s our turn.

You and I need to use every single tool in our toolbox. Raise your voice with every breath in your body, and I’ll lift up your message in the Senate. RIGHT NOW is the time to speak out and make sure every Senator knows that we won’t stand for Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.

And in November, we’ll show the Republicans something powerfully important: Republicans will lose/their/seats for trying to fill Supreme Court seats with right-wing ideologues.

Let’s turn the Senate blue and stop Donald Trump from taking over the Supreme Court. Will you chip in $45 to support me and Democratic candidates across the country?

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

WHICH Democratic candidates, Elizabeth?

This is the sort of presidential campaign speech that turns me off. In realty, this nominee is about the same as the SC justice being replace. There has been a 5 t0 4 conservative majority for a very long time. The worst of the worst, Scalia, died under very sketchy circumstances, so actually the court is a bit milder than it was. The next worse right wing lunatic is Thomas and he seems fixed for a while.

Democrats lost control of government because they sold out their base. Warren needs to build confidence among the left wing side of the demo party. A tirade like this does not do that. It is more grandstanding.

Yo, Rodion, please enlighten us about the “very sketchy circumstances” under which Scalia died.
Surely, it could not have been a natural death, not of a 79-year old man who suffered from coronary artery disease, obesity, sleep apnea, pulmonary disease, and high blood pressure and who smoked and drank too much.
It took the examining doctor about a minute to figure out what had happened. Please tell us the doctor was mistaken. Surely Alex Jones and The Daily Caller (courtesy Tucker Carlson, a source you’ve relied on in the past) must have the answer.
Was it really Barry? Or Hillary and Bill climbing through a window in the hunting lodge and then unhooked his breathing apparatus? Wait! The apparatus was never hooked up. They must have strangled him as he got ready to shoot ducks from the grassy knoll. The possibilities are endless. Help me out!

I luvya, Lizzy. You'd be great on SCOTUS. You should have been head of the CFPB, since it was your baby. You've done a lot of good. But like Moxa says, which candidates? The $50 I sent to the DCCC seems mostly to have gone to blue dog candidates, and in some jurisdictions, that's probably necessary. Give a ringing public endorsement of candidates like Ocasio-Cortez who are running in progressive districts, and I'll double the 45.

"You can count me as a NO vote"...when it comes to Kavanaugh. What a surprise!

Count me among the cadres who would love to see Kavanaugh AND HIS ILK denied.

But here is my issue with Warren and for that matter too many Democrats. We KNOW WHERE YOU STAND. Save your appearances in front of the public for the RIGHT TIME. For when it is important to make people question, not just nod.

Believe it or not...this continual "Boy Who Cried Wolf" tendency does both feed the opposition and make some of your "friends in battle" cringe a bit.
