The Un-American ICE

By Charles Pierce, Esquire

29 January 18

hen the damage done by this administration* is toted up, assuming there will be somebody left to count the cost, the unleashing of Border Patrol and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division, and the subsequent depredations thereof, are going to rank right at the top of the list. If you want to see real fascism in action, look at what these people have been up to. Somebody leaves water in the desert for undocumented immigrants, and the Border Patrol pours it all out and then arrests the guy, according to The Washington Post:

What received wider attention, however, was a video that the Tucson-based aid group, No More Deaths, also distributed with its report. The footage, taken between 2010 and 2017, showed Border Patrol agents kicking over water jugs that had been left in the desert. In one clip, a male agent sneers at the person filming him, demanding to know whom the water is for, as he empties a gallon bottle of water onto the ground. Now the aid group is calling the arrest of one its volunteers suspicious. On Wednesday, Border Patrol agents arrested Scott Warren, 35, in the desert near Ajo, Ariz., about eight hours after the No More Deaths report and video were released.
Warren, a longtime volunteer with the group and a faculty associate at Arizona State University, was detained on preliminary felony charges of alien smuggling; he appeared in court Thursday and was released on his own recognizance, the group said in a statement. Border Patrol agents also arrested two people who were with Warren on Wednesday and “receiving humanitarian aid” at the time, according to No More Deaths. Those two people remain in custody, the group said.

It’s a felony to leave water for thirsty people? This is not America.

Meanwhile, ICE has run wild. They are busting parents while their kids are at school. They’re publicizing “sweeps” in cities like they’re chasing down Capone or someone. And there’s a very good possibility that, in the so-called “sanctuary cities,” we will see confrontations between ICE agents and local law enforcement. And now we have this latest insanity, whereby technology will be handed to an agency sliding swiftly toward a very dangerous point. From The Verge:

The system gives the agency access to billions of license plate records and new powers of real-time location tracking, raising significant concerns from civil libertarians. The source of the data is not named in the contract, but an ICE representative said the data came from Vigilant Solutions, the leading network for license plate recognition data. “Like most other law enforcement agencies, ICE uses information obtained from license plate readers as one tool in support of its investigations,” spokesperson Dani Bennett said in a statement. “ICE is not seeking to build a license plate reader database, and will not collect nor contribute any data to a national public or private database through this contract.

Of course not. What could I possibly be thinking?

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

It is now. It's Trump's America. Thank you to all you darlings who got this pond scum and his cronies elected!

That's telling it like it is.

This is looking more and more frighteningly like NaziGermany with their “Brown Shirted” goons. The very fact that this is happening should send chills down every decent American’s spine! These people have twisted history around to the point where Adolph Hitler is their god and America the bad guy. When I think of all those veterans of WWII I can only imagine the horror they would feel about this fascist animal in the White House and his besotted minions.

I'm right with you on this, Suzy Skier. I once threw the word "fascism" around like there was no tomorrow, and since then have been very cautious about using it. In this case, however, it applies absolutely. Calling to mind the Reverend Niemoller's "First they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew...." If this regime remains in power for its full eight years, there is no telling who will be following immigrants. Protestors on the left, maybe?

...just to add a word: the besotted minions are certainly out there. But it was the electoral college that really handed Trump the victory. I agree that Trump has brought the maggots out of the rotting corpse of American fascism/nazism.

Sigh ... of course if any of the dummies who voted him in start losing big time, they'll just blame someone else and wonder what happened to them.

"It’s a felony to leave water for thirsty people? This is not America."

Oh, but it is, and always has been. Of course that is not ALL that "America" is, any more than this nation-state in which we live is all of America, or more accurately, of "the Americas." And of course Europe was still displaying the worst of its barbaric heritage as recently s the genocides in the Balkan states less than two decades ago.

But this nation-state was born in chattel slavery as well as indentured servitude, the reason the latter practice was included in Amendment XIII. The inherent superiority of the "white race" was taken for granted by virtually all white people in the US, including some who had supported the abolition of slavery, as recently as the late 19th century, and by the majority even at the midpoint of the 20th. Facilitating the capital punishment by default of immigrants of non-European descent is an extreme example, but hardly an aberration.

As it says in the song, we've "come a long way" toward a wider acceptance of a broader definition of what creatures are seen as fully human in the past century or so; but we "still have a [very] long way to go."

Since Trump announced, I have said there is nothing good to say about him. I still feel the same way, but more emphatically than ever.

I hope that these "Green Shirts" are preparing themselves for long prison terms. They deserve to rot in hell.

I keep wondering when we're going to be treated to mass graves outside or underneath those concentration camps. I mean detention centers. Trump's American is starting to blush with the zeal of the Nazis and the republicans are giving them the cloak of invisibility. Letters to our editors, subscriptions to print magazines like The Nation, Mother Jones, The American Prospect, The Progressive, In These Times and participation in our local Congressional Districts is how and where we have to fight this assault to our decency and our democracy.

This is not meant to belittle the harm tRump's Gestapo tactics are causing but we must remember that Obama was dubbed 'the deporter-in-chi ef' because he broke all the records for deporting undocumented people. Yet another reason why no one was that energized by Clinton- and somehow, albeit with Russia's help, tRump was able to win.

Actually, what should be done is complete doing away of U.S.A.and replace it with Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, etc.,etc.,etc., and let everybody come in!!!!

Never mind the fact that no American can't buy property, work,e tc..anywhere in Latin America without first being specific citizen of that country.

The CSI arbitrarily picking up immigrants is the equivalent of the Gestapo picking up Jews.
