here are now three simultaneous investigations in three cities. As Jelani Cobb notes, below, the common thread is firearms. Alton Sterling was shot following a shouted claim that he had a gun. Philando Castile, according to his girlfriend, was shot multiple times shortly after informing a police officer that he was carrying a firearm for which he had a permit. The exchange of gunfire in Dallas was like a scene out of a war zone.
The abundance of guns at our disposal, and the corresponding fears they induce, are creating multiple hazards that threaten everyone – even law enforcement. More guns are not the answer. The answer is to do what every other modern nation has done and end the sale of murderous weapons (and buy back those already sold).
