Why I Endorse Bernie Sanders

By Cornel West, Cornel West's Facebook Page

hy I Endorse Brother Bernie and Reject Brother Trump.

The American Empire is in decline. Our market-driven culture is in decay. The criminal justice system has failed us. And the political system is collapsing due to the weight of corrupt lobbyists and greedy capitalists. Only organized power of courageous and compassionate people can turn around these catastrophic realities. Social movements in the streets and jails over against the Establishment in both decrepit political parties are fundamental. And prophetic politicians -- always with their faults and blind spots -- who tell the truth about Wall Street, white supremacy, empire, patriarchy and homophobia, deserve our critical support. Yet even more important is the issue of integrity.

Brother Bernie and Brother Trump are authentic human beings in stark contrast to their donor-driven opponents. Yet only Bernie has authenticity and integrity, whereas Trump is for real but not for right. Trump's attacks on precious Mexican brothers and sisters are unconscionable -- even as his blessed mother was born in Scotland and grandfather (Mr. Drumpf) was born in Germany. His kind of nativistic hostility could have excluded them. And Trump's unpatriotic complicity with the plutocratic corruption of our political system for over 30 years calls into question his integrity, including his commitment to "make America great again."

My endorsement of Brother Bernie in the primaries is not an affirmation of the neo-liberal Democratic Party or a downplaying of the immorality of the ugly Israeli occupation of Palestinians. I do so because he is a long-distance runner with integrity in the struggle for justice for over 50 years. Now is the time for his prophetic voice to be heard across our crisis-ridden country, even as we push him with integrity toward a more comprehensive vision of freedom for all.

Why I Endorse Brother Bernie and Reject Brother TrumpThe American Empire is in decline. Our market-driven culture is...

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

You are much to kind with regard to Donald Trump. He is a lightweight and will drop out of the race as soon as he realizes that he may lose. Very thin skinned...

However, it is always nice to have another intellectual to join other Americans in supporting issues Sanders has put up front. It isn't a cult of personality with Bernie Sanders.

Here Trump's parents are both immigrants and his attitude towards immigration is so savage. Why so?

The American Empire is in decline. Why do we get our first imperial candidate at this late date? Trump sure sounds and acts like an emperor.

"Here Trump's parents are both immigrants and his attitude towards immigration is so savage. Why so?"

Because hatred of immigrants who aren't white is endemic in the Republican party.

Precisely so, Cornel. Thank you.

Both Brother Cornel West and Brother "Bernie" continue to ignore the treason of 9/11 and the resulting endless "War on Terror".
An "intellectual" and a Senator who both think airplanes can disappear right into buildings?
Bah. I'm disgusted. AND I'm disgusted with all the commenters here who don't know any better than that, either, or don't care one way or the other.

We are each entitled to our opinions no matter how irrational and lunatic, I suppose.

As long as everyone knows that "opinions" and "beliefs" are not the same as "truths"...or reality.

Yeah, why doesn't everyone stop in his/her tracks and focus on Agenda [fill in your favorite here]? I can't imagine.

So Bernie voted for Israel at the expense of USAmerican interest, but so did all other federal politicians. Nonetheless, in the short term, he is our best hope to be the first Jewish President.

What does his religion have to do with it? We still have (to the chagrin of Christian evangelicals and fundamentalists ) a secular Government.

Thank you Cornel West for address "left" critiques of Bernie Sanders!

A lot of the ultraleft want to make their critiques the centerfold of the campaign rather than the issues facing the American people. Thankfully Bernie recognizes this or else he wouldn't be outfront and ahead.

I wonder when and if the rest of these folks will wake up and realize the same?

In what other country is Israel the basis of a politician's campaign?

Dr. West is the ultimate Black Lives Matter spokesman and has been for decades. He sees through Hillary's mask of deception and through husband Bill's phony accolade as the "first black president". He takes a pragmatic view of the presidential field and uses his intellect to chose his favorite, unlike those who are stuck on single issues and distorted perspectives. I'm sorry those young women who trashed Bernie in Seattle don't have the same level of understanding Cornell West has. They have hurt both Bernie and the BLM movement with their undisciplined tirade.

At least Bernie doesn't sequester protesters into “free speech zones”.

I agree with Dr. West , Bernie has been walking with the people for decades. What a clear chance we have now to stand up for what's good and true and best in our country .

"My endorsement of Brother Bernie in the primaries is not an affirmation of the neo-liberal Democratic Party or a downplaying of the immorality of the ugly Israeli occupation of Palestinians"

Well, that is sort of obvious, Bernie is about as non neo-liberal as the Left has. Only in Sanders' blanket support of Israel over the rights of Palestinians is he correct...but there are no perfect candidates, you do the best you can with who runs.

The Daily Kos posted an article saying an honest candidate is dangerous!
I don't think that was the case with FDR- As Warren says we have to fight for what we want and she is on the same page as Bernie - we have to show up in the polls in big numbers- keep spreading the word - make calls when the time comes - They can't keep track of all the young people who plan to vote for Sanders. so we have to keep it up. Look what the dishonest people have done. Turned us into an Oligarchy. Hillary took $200,000 from Wall St and told them it would be business as usual if she is elected. Bernie's track record shows him to be an experienced man of his word who has been on the side of the majority all of his adult life.. Love you brother West!

Having Dr. West provide the same analysis as several other pundits/republi cans is increasing--spe cifically referring to Bernie's sincerity. Yes, a republican or two has come out supporting Bernie's position on several of his issues. It is unfortunate that the corporate media ignores Bernie's qualities as a Senator. However, it is still early in the campaign. It is my sincere hope that Senator Sanders is able to increase his appeal to other likely voters who have voiced their disgust with "business as usual" politics. It is at that time he can very well win the nomination and become our next President of the United States.

It is rare that I find comment from Brother West to be naive and I am afraid this is one such instance. Bernie Sanders, if one takes the time to actually research his history and record, is a supporter of genocide, war and incarceration despite his rhetoric to the contrary. His entire campaign is little more than a populist magnet to once again attract the disgruntled and naive left, who are weary after 7 years of hope sadly misplaced in the promise of Obama, into the grand fakery and trickery of the corporate Democrat Party. Where BLM is concerned, Bernie must be viewed in the light of day where it can be clearly seen his efforts have not been directed toward racial justice and equality but, instead, toward the Jim Crow programs of Bill Clinton he so readily supported. On so many issues, Bernie talks a good talk yet his footsteps track in the opposite direction. Bernie, in the far reaching chance of becoming President, will be not a breath of hope & change but simply Obama 2.0
