Plot to Provoke War With Iran Thwarted by Navy Analyst

By Juan Cole, Informed Comment

26 August 12

horter WaPo: In spring of 2007, someone in the Bush administration (unindicted co-conspirator Richard Bruce Cheney? Neocons?) Sends uber hawk Vice Admiral Kevin J. Cosgriff to Oil Gulf with instructions to provoke a war with Iran. He allegedly toys with challenging Iran's claim to half of the Shatt al-Arab. He certainly decided abruptly to bring two aircraft carriers to the Gulf, in hopes of provoking Iran into doing something stupid, and without telling the State Department or the White House.

He also pushes analysis alleging that Bahrain Shiites intend anti-American terrorism on behalf of Iran.

Adviser to the Navy Gwenyth Todd (former National Security Council staffer) rightly challenges this stupid conspiracy theory (Bahrain Shiites are mostly Arab Akhbaris who reject ayatollahs, and would not slavishly obey Persian, Usuli Iran!).

I.e. Cosgriff was allegedly nearly making a coup in order to get up a war. Failing something so drastic, he may have (or his Neocon superiors may have) hoped to forestall direct talks with Iran that month.

Todd blows the whistle on Cosgriff, letting State know about his intended insubordination. Word gets back to Neocons or whoever was behind the provocation and Cosgriff that Todd was the leak. She is abruptly deprived of her base pass and security clearance, a trumped up case is made against her with the FBI that she received money from a former boyfriend who did illegal consulting with Sudan (she says she returned the small sum he sent her). Todd's career is ruined, her inquiries and grievances are ignored, she marries an Austrlian naval officer and goes into exile in Perth. FBI harasses her even there.

Todd's account is corroborated by Navy sources speaking off the record, according to the Washington Post.

But there are lots of reasons to believe there is something to her charges.

What happened to her was typical of Neoconservative ways of operating. Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle, Scooter Libby, and other Israel partisans inside the Pentagon or in Cheney's office repeatedly played dirty tricks, held meetings and did not invite principals, contolled meeting agendas, and spied on and tried to discredit foeign service officers at the State Department, according to FSOs who have privately talked to me. The Neocons did these things in order to get up the Iraq War, which they thought would protect Israel. According to Wesley Clark, they hoped for a series of wars. In 2007 Cheney was clearly pushing for a war on Iran. Many of the Neoconservatives had left government by 2007, but the network remained powerful, especially in Cheney's office.

Among the victims/ witnesses was Karen Kwiatkowsky, who served in Feith's Office of Special Plans, which cherry-picked raw intelligence, stove-piped it to the White House, illegally and inaccurately pbriefed Congress on intelligence, and generally behaved like a seedy third world secret police cell. She was appalled at what she saw.

A similar dirty trick was played on Joe Wilson and his wife, Valerie Plame, when Wilson blew the whistle on the Bush administration's falsehoods about alleged Iraqi 'weapons of masss destruction.' Plame was investigated by Karl Rove and Scooter Libby, who discovered she was CIA undercover, and they tried to spead the information around to the press in hopes of weakening Wilson's credibility.

And, since I consulted in DC with government analysts about how to uproot al-Qaeda, and elements in the Bush White House minded my having influence with the analysts, someone in the WH in late 2005 ordered the CIA to spy on me and attempt to destroy my reputation (very illegal).

If Gwenyth Todd's story is true, she is owed thanks by her country for thwarting a plot to get up a war on Iran. Given the things we know about how the Neocons operated, it is entirely plausible.

A dark thought: the Neocons have glommed onto Mitt Romney and will come to power if he does, and they still desperately want a war on Iran. your social media marketing partner

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

War on Iran/propaganda is in full blast under the current administration. War on Syria is US/Israel proxy war on Iran. US is shipping Bunker Buster bombs to Israel (check EXTRA $70 million military aid to Israel passed by congress recently).
Non-Aligned Movement summit opened in Tehran:
"Iran has opened a summit bringing together more than 120 nations that call themselves "non-aligned", with an appeal to rid the world of nuclear weapons" .. where is this information in US media? CENSORED.

Absolutely another reason to reject Romneyhood. If the Rs and TBs want a war with Iran, they can go and fight it and leave the rest of us out of it. They can take their own kids into battle instead of ours. They want a war? Let them fight it themselves. A war with Iran is exactly what this country DOES NOT need. Let them pay for it too. We've paid and sacrificed enough for the Bush lies, don't ever let them lie us into another war. I lost a son-in-law and 2 nephews lost limbs in Iraq. The American people have done all the sacrificing, time for that to end. Let the pond scum fight their own battles if they are not smart enough to use diplomacy, which we can see they don't know how to do, they cannot even handle it in our government.

I was in the Army in 'Nam and was badly wounded, but recovered fully. When my grandson wanted to enlist I talked with him about the service and begged him to join the AF or Navy. I love the Army, but you stand a lot less chance of being harmed in those services. So, last year he spent his summer lobbing cruise missiles into Libya and eating well.

Every politician who votes for offensive war should be required to fight on the front lines along with all his direct family before anyone else is sent. How many wars do you think you'd see then?
-16 # KittatinyHawk 2012-08-26 20:50
Have been asking them since Nam ...

I believe people do not understand that the Draft is coming back, the same kids now including women, will go. Not the 1%
majority of their kids and grandkids will kill on video games.
Time they serve first, serve next to prisoner. I believe prisoners should have to serve front line with their peer system's brats.
+31 # RMDC 2012-08-27 05:00
"lobbing cruise missiles into Libya." you know someday he may suffer pyschological damage for that act. For sure, he killed children and women. Cruise missiles are weapons of mass destruction. They land on houses and civilians.

Why didn't you tell your grandson to stay out of the military. When will veterans stop allowing their kids and grandkids to make the same mistakes that they made.
+8 # genierae 2012-08-27 10:58
It's not as simple as you seem to think, RMDC. The 1% has set things up so that young people can't afford college on their own. Loans are expensive and grants almost non-existent these days, and civilian jobs are very hard to find. Joining the military, they can get an education while being paid for it, and so they will take the risks that go with being a soldier, so they can get a degree without ransoming the rest of their lives. They think that the odds are in their favor, they won't end up in a war zone, and they will be able to travel the world. Grandparents and parents can advise and suggest, but young people must live their own lives and make their own choices.
+8 # bmiluski 2012-08-27 10:58
It wouldn't matter how much you talked to your grandsons they would still go to war. It's in the male DNA/testosteron e. If it weren't we would have had only one war in our entire history because we would have learned from it.

bingers: I also discussed alternate choices with my grandson, but his dad is a 20 yr., special forces soldier, and he idolizes him. I am reduced to being grateful that there were no openings in special forces, and he is getting training now for air traffic control. I think this might be safer, I'm not sure. However, he will switch over if he gets the chance.

My husband, Army, and my youngest brother, Air Force, served in Vietnam, neither of them say much about it. I'm glad that you fully recovered from your wounds. I agree that we would have NO wars if every politician who supports them had to fight on the front lines, and if he/she were too old, then their children would have to take their place. They are ghouls, making money off of the dead, but they cannot escape their karma, it is following close behind.

All the best to you.

"making money off of the dead"
Rich people have learned that war makes them richer and they are willing to spill someone else s blood to become richer. War-profiteers need to be put in prison till the end of hostilities.

bingers: Thanks for your service and I'm so glad you recovered from your injuries from Viet Nam. I truly believe that the first to go to war should be Congress and their families. Should be lots less wars then. We really don't have that much influence on the choices our grandchildren make, do we? But it is set up so that financially, there are little choices for them nowadays. Hoping your grandson comes home safely.

genierae: Thank you for caring. I hope for the best for your grandson. I also have a granddaughter in the Army. She returned from Iraq last year. She ran out of money while in college and joined ROTC and the day after her graduation, she was commissioned as a Lt. in the Army. She has been promoted a couple of times, so I'm not sure what her rank is now. But she is now stationed in Kansas. I worried the entire time she was in Iraq and so grateful when she came home safely. Of course, we all know that keeping the young people out of the workforce is to supply the military. I too, look forward to all the troops coming back from Afghanistan. I don't know why the rightwingers are so anxious to go to war in Iran, of all places. I do know there are people making lots of money off wars, and we do all the sacrificing. Something is wrong with that picture.

Too many people in power or near the levers of power to let them have their way, they will go to war in a heartbeat, because it puts money in their pocket and the rest think to be against war is putting the country at risk, as we have seen since 9/11, going to war is the fastest way to put America and Americans at risk. My condolences for the price your family has paid. It seems the GOP learned nothing from Vietnam. Maybe most Americans failed to learn also, maybe by now they will stop a future president from doing it all over again. Maybe we need to bring charges of war crimes against those who lied us into Iraq.

Thanks so much, Gwenyth Todd, you are a true American hero! The only reason we are not at war with Iran right now, is because we have a president who has a cool, steady head on his shoulders. He's trying to curb Israel's Neocons and they hate him for not giving them a greenlight to bomb Iran. It is alarming to see that Mitt Romney is running neck-in-neck with Obama in the latest polls. +68 # independentmind 2012-08-26 14:51
This would be very disturbing, especially if Israel continues to try to push for US military intervention in Iran by threatening to attack, which Obama has refused to do. Their influence on our foreign policy is way too strong and if Romney gets in they will have even more influence - then we will have a war with Iran on our hands. Kudos to those brave souls that are honest enough to speak out.

I have been saying that for years. Many in our Congress have dual citizenship with Israel. Once you get to that level in politics, they should give up one or the other.

Sheldon Adelson, the multi-millionai re who owns the Venetian in Las Vegas, and has donated millions and millions to Newt Gringrich and now Romney famously has said: "I'm ashamed of ever having worn the United States military uniform and wish I had worn the Israeli uniform." I know he is not in Congress but the control he has might even be greater than any one there.

+5 # skipb48 2012-08-26 18:06
In the eyes of US law there is no such thing as dual citizenship. If you are a US citizen by definition you have renounced all other possible citizenship, but other countries, especially in countries with the British empire tradition, do not recognize a person's ability to renounce citizenship. Some people have this "dual" citizenship through no fault of their own.

This was the cause of the War of 1812, when they impressed our sailors at sea.
+21 # Johnny Genlock 2012-08-26 21:11
skipb48? What in G-d's name are you talking about? I think we're talking about dual citizenship Israelis; the one's who were claiming anti-Semitism when we were criticizing NeoCons until they realized how revealing that was. Individuals like Rahm Emmanuel, Emanuel "left when the Gulf War broke out, in order to volunteer in the IDF. He served in one of Israel's northern bases until the war ended, and upon his return to the US became Clinton's advisor in the White House for almost eight years."
Michael Chertoff holds dual citizenship with the US and Israel. His family is one of the founding families of the State of Israel and his mother was one of the first ever agents of the Mossad, Israel's spy agency.
Douglas Feith-Undersecr etary of War for Policy. Fired from National Security Council in 1976 on suspicion of passing classified documents to Israel. "Dual Citizen" of US-Israel. Feith created the "Office of Special Plans" shortly after 9/11 which was where all of the fake intelligence accusing Iraq of developing WMD's and having ties to Al Qaida came from.
How many examples do you need, skipb48? Somehow the ". . . through no fault of their own" statement of yours just tastes a bit stale and sour on the tongue.

Both Romney AND Obama are likely to start more wars, and both major parties are hawks of the empire. Obama already made an unprovoked war on Libya, and escalated war in Afghanistan, and more illegal drone attacks that cause huge civilian casualties in Pakistan, Yemen, etc. He tried very hard to extend US troop presence in Iraq beyond the Bush-negotiated deadline for withdrawal - and despite his failure, thousands of US military contractors still stayed behind there. He has also dramatically increased tension in the Asia Pacific, by rapidly increasing American military presence and military bases there, in provocation and hostility towards China.

CIA's secret memo says Obama is top asset in persuading people to go to war! Right wing war enthusiasts, and even academics, share similar sentiments. See:

Exactly! Unfortunately, people who tell the truth about Obama on these forums---i.e., he's bought and paid for by the banks/war-monge ring interests---inv ariably are criticized. Wake up, people! He escalated in Afghanistan, sent military intervention into Libya ILLEGALLY, and is now mixing it up in Syria, again, without authorization. He might not be openly singing the "bomb Iran" song, but he has openly pledged to have Israel's back, and it amounts to the same thing.
+7 # Billy Bob 2012-08-27 14:30
No it doesn't amount to the same thing. Romney doesn't want to wait for Israel. Romney has HIS OWN REASONS to bomb Iran.

If Romney was in the White House right now, we'd already be at war with Iran...

Not to mention that pesky little fact that Romney openly wants to destroy Social Security, Medicare and Pell Grants.

And what a fine bunch of Americans we have had in government during the Bush years! The current crew is better but I still don't trust any of these administrations who basically kiss ass with the corporate biggies, and in the past administration, the petro barons. And I still think history will show that the Iraq scam was an attempt to take over their massive untapped oil fields and not all the other theories. Stay tuned on this one. Remember, both the President and Veep came from oil backgrounds. Disgusting piece of our history!
+2 # 1984 2012-08-26 20:29
How did they come from oil??
+5 # bmiluski 2012-08-27 11:37
The Bush family is heavily invested in oil. GWbush owned (and ran into the ground) 4 oil companies.

In the Muslim world the Sunny majority and the Shiite minority are often at each others throat. However when a non-Muslim state attacks or seems about to attack a Sunni state, suddenly the Muslim world is one. So Ahmadinejad wants permanent almost war with Israel. And the right-wing in Israel wants permanent almost war with a Muslim state to push the Right Wing agenda and stop protests over the screwing of poor Israeli’s by their right wing government. Unfortunately if the poor Israelis complaining about their right-wing government destroying social service programs get out of hand, then and only then will Israel’s right-wing leaders attack Iran.

I read an article in the past regarding the Obama Whitehouse being haunted by the ghosts of both Bush's pasts. I realize Obama is the Commander in Chief but who is babysitting the loose cannons? Incidently who really calls the shots in the CIA? With H.W.'s history as CIA director combined with W's and Cheney's influence they no doubt have a few supporter's still on the inside. It all makes for a very shaky situation for everyone in this world and it also makes one understand WHY Iran is acting the way they are. They are obviously, and with a certain amount of justification, very afraid.

P.A., It seems to me that the CIA is a rogue organization, and presidents don't have much say over their actions. I don't think President Obama has the power that we have always assigned to the presidency, there's so much secrecy, and much may be kept from him.

We were mostly okay with the Arab nations until Eisenhower had the CIA depose Mossadegh and since then it's been understandably strained. We may be good guys based on the preponderance of our actions, but we're far from being benign friends to the world. They have many good reasons to either mistrust us or even detest us.

Figures-women are 2% of upper management but 70% of cases of whistle blowing and all around "do the right thing"- regardless the consequences. Us guys aren't looking too sharp these days.

If true we have sunk to an old time low, women having to compete .... we are the superior race. No need to compete.

War on Iran has been threatened ever since Mossadegh nationalized the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, BP's predecessor; instead MI6 and the CIA engineered a coup in 1953 and returned Reza Shah Pahlavi to power. Iran holds 10% of the world's proven oil reserves and 15% of its gas. (CIA Factbook) These resources have been successfully exploited by the renationalized oil industry, making it possible for the Islamic Republic to become a significant independent actor in world energy markets. The 2007 war threats mentioned here were part of the US response to Iran's creation of an independent oil market based on transactions in Euros and other non-dollar currencies. This exchange initially did serve energy products such as crude oil and gas but was soon limited to non-energy petrochemical products, with a plan for staged reopening of an energy market. That plan has now been completed, and in operation for almost 18 mo. The reason for Saudi and US (not Israeli!) interest in war with Iran is to extinguish this competitor in the world energy market. US energy interests (Kochs & Co) are directing planning of an Israeli attack on Iran in order to achieve this in Iran, and perhaps as well a coup d'etat in this, our own precious (and still free!) land, the United States of America.

Buzzy Krongard,, is up to his ol' antics. Anybody from AB would know that anything happening in the ME, is, without exception, at the behest and direction of IS. Come on Buzzy. Didn't make enough on those stock options side bets when the towers fell that you've got to pull this "disinformation campaign" to make your lunch money?

Vote for a 3rd party and you'll get Obama out of office. Next, President Mittens WILL start another war WITH IRAN. Right now, President Obama is the only thing preventing war with Iran.

If a war that would be bigger than Iraq and Afghanistan COMBINED is what you want, vote for a 3rd party.

Otherwise, stop trying to convince sane people that there are no differences between Obama and the repugs who DESPARATELY want him out of office AT ALL COSTS.
-5 # 666 2012-08-27 05:46
I think everyone who votes ought to take something like the oath of office -- especially those parts about upholding the constitution and defending america from enemies foreign and domestic. maybe a few more people would be willing to hold officials to the higher standard they have sworn. Vote 3rd party -- get rid of ALL the traitors!

Israel would rather start WWIII than admit
that the only reason Israel exists is because of the mistreatment Jews received in Europe. Admitting the real reason for its existence would be the first step toward reconcilling with, first, the Palestinians and next the rest of the Middle East.

Hmm, I came to this site thinking I was going to read some unbiased news, guess I was wrong. I am shocked at how many people are still stuck in the us vs them. Both parties are crooked and both parties answer to the same masters and both parties are driving us toward the same cliff. Four years later, we are still at war! I could have sworn I heard OBummer say he was ending the wars... must have overlooked that somewhere while he was bailing out all his and GB's buddies... sheesh...
+3 # genierae 2012-08-28 09:19
MRR050: Your false equivalency seems to suggest that you are a right-winger. Yes, both parties are flawed, but on the 1 to 10 scale of corruption I give the Democrats a 3, while the GOP deserves a big fat 12! I am an Independent, so I am not biased either way. I pick the candidate who will most benefit the interests of the American people, and that is ALWAYS a Democrat. Barack Hussein Obama is far and away the best man for the office of president, comparing him to Mitt Romney is like comparing gold to brass. And disrespecting his name only makes you look juvenile.

For those that decide to serve: when the time comes that you find yourself in a hellish situation that gives you ptsd, or worse, it is too late, you are marked for life. Been there as a brother/son observer-victim the the behavior. It was very unpleasant.

There is not the slightest doubt that the neocons, if able to attain power, will hastily shove this nation into a war. David Addington under Dick Cheney set the office of the executive up as a dictatorship with the aid of Haynes and Yoo. All that needs to happen is the executive declares that the nation is in a state akin to war, a power the constitution reserves solely to Congress, and all of a sudden no laws apply to the executive as far as the neocons are concerned and according to the bogus less than legal still secret decisions crafted by the diseased mind of John Yoo.

Johnny Genlock, I am more upset with the +10 you got at midnight then the hate you expose. If I checked every name the blog would be off the first page. As for Robert Zoellick and his religious faith see “The Neocon War Against Robert Zoellick”,

Since the above link was dated 8/9/12, I wonder if your job is to actually make those angry at Israel look prejudice like the claim an Israeli missile hit the Pentagon. Many from Ireland which considers people from Ireland citizens of Ireland whether they become American Citizens or not, lobby for their homeland. People in the US from Cuba and from Vietnam primary lobby differently which is why the US is friends with Vietnam now. Saudi Arabia sends money to the Sunni rebels and spends a lot of money lobbing the US and Europe to help overthrow the Syrian government. Many minority groups in Syria expect a Sunni Government to be more oppressive.

I think the problem is that people from Iran or Palestine who lobby for their government are called terrorists, even American whose conscience makes them lobby. If Iran and Iranian in the US were allowed to lobby, US policy would be far less one sided. Shame on ReaderSupported News readers for as of midnight giving this hate a +10.

My cousin, Davy, served in Vietnam. He returned physically unharmed. However, he said that he never closed his eyes at night without seeing the Viet Cong coming over the hill, knowing that it was a choice of kill or be killed. He died in his bed one night when he was quite young of heart failure. I've often wondered if the last thing he saw was the Viet Cong coming over the hill. War is bad for the winners and the losers.

I want to apologize to Johnny Genlock for my condemnation of,

He clearly stated he was posting a list he just found thus not responsible for each name on the list,

I apologized once before for something similar during Gores campaign. I received John Kaminski's “Nader is the one” posting it to my friends. Then read the entire post and when I got to among other things “their Zionist/CIA/ban ker controlled corporate bosses,” I sent apologies for spreading hate, Audrey Clement now a candidate sent me back “You don't have to apologize for your opinion”,

Years later NewHeavenNewEar th sent me “Deciphering the 9/11 Distractions” also by Kaminski

I asked them to apologize for anti-Semitic hate, but the send icon didn't work, gettimg kicked of for two many duplicates. Before I could mail them a a letter, that same day I was run over by a car, and during constantly extending trial in the end the person convicted for hitting me got 6 months probation because the prosecutor suddenly told me their was no damages on his car. The Prosecutor didn't let me address the court to tell them they probably had the wrong license plate of a hit and run driver phoned in

Dont vote for Mitt the Twit or Lyin Ryan...they are destroyers of our country. They will turn our country into a poverty stricken land without jobs or support. Mitt will do the US what he did to companies when he worked for Bain. He's worse then Bush...God I never thought I would ever say that, but there it is, these 2 clowns are without conscience. Its like having 2 Dick Cheneys, narcissistic, without conscience, totally devoid of human emotion, and just all about money and how much they can grab for themselves. God help us!

Plot to Focus War went from the top RSN story to not on the front page as soon as I posted my apology for,

It seems to me that Sajjad Shauka's friends in Pakistan like to click on his stories, readersupported tion/119-119/12 735-bloodshed-o f-muslims-in-bu rma

Could the Pro-Israel lobby be cover the Internet with machine click on to the extent that their withdrawal of interest could make a story blogged unimportant. By the way the most persistent Cuban emigres to the US blog vote blog and spend money in favor of keeping the blockade. Cuban American opinion is close to in between.

Jewish Americans who believe Israel is the only issue that matters, are a small minority, but those who vote pressure a non political friend to vote, spend money and vote without fail, will vote for Romney while the other Jewish Americans hopefully won't join the majority too depressed to vote crowd.
I think the turn duel citizen which could be applied to every Irish American whose parents are born in Ireland, want to sabotage Jews that want reasonable policy in the middle east or are dupes to those that do.
