Republicans' Gross Responses to Assault Allegation Against Brett Kavanaugh

The GOP reacted by pointing out there are women Kavanaugh didn’t rape.

n Friday, Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer broke news in the New Yorker that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault.

Here are the details:

The allegation dates back to the early nineteen-eighties, when Kavanaugh was a high-school student at Georgetown Preparatory School, in Bethesda, Maryland, and the woman attended a nearby high school. In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her. She claimed in the letter that Kavanaugh and a classmate of his, both of whom had been drinking, turned up music that was playing in the room to conceal the sound of her protests, and that Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to free herself. Although the alleged incident took place decades ago and the three individuals involved were minors, the woman said that the memory had been a source of ongoing distress for her, and that she had sought psychological treatment as a result.

Information about the accusation comes a day Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) released a cryptic statement announcing that she had “received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court” and had referred that information to the FBI.

Within half an hour of the New Yorker publishing its story, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) — chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee — released a statement signed by 65 women who knew Kavanaugh around the time of sexual assault allegation.

The women claim that “[f]or the entire time we have known Brett Kavanaugh, he has behaved honorably and treated women with respect.”

But Grassley’s attempt to undercut the sexual assault accusations against Kavanaugh is a poor one. Treating women well in one set of circumstances certainly doesn’t mean someone is incapable of assaulting them in another.

The letter also doesn’t directly address the allegations against Kavanaugh, raising questions about whether the women who signed it knew their signatures would ultimately be used by Republicans in an attempt to discredit a sexual assault accusation.

Character reference letters are commonly deployed by men accused of sexual misconduct. For instance, after he was credibly accused of child molestation late last year, failed GOP U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore released testimonials from 12 women who spoke to what a quality person they believed him to be.

Grassley wasn’t the only Republican who made an embarrassing, reflexive attempt to defend Kavanaugh. On Twitter, another member of the Judiciary Committee, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), mocked the accusation as nothing more than hearsay.

Meanwhile, Conn Carroll, communications director for a third member of the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), insisted that Republicans were just thinking ahead when they decided to solicit signatures from women on a letter vouching for Kavanaugh’s character — because of course Democrats would fabricate allegations against him.

Kavanaugh, via the White House, released a statement saying, “I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation. I did not do this back in high school or at any time.”

Trump, of course, has also unequivocally denied sexual assault allegations made against him.

Police Accidentally Tweet Screenshot Showing That They Monitor Anti-Racism and Anti-Police Brutality Groups Print

n their efforts to inform the public that they were doing everything possible to manage the spontaneous combustion of several homes, the Massachusetts State Police inadvertently let a few organizations fighting to end police brutality, racism and the reign of Donald Trump, know that they are being watched.

On Friday, as homes throughout Massachusetts’ Merrimack Valley exploded from a gas line problem, the Massachusetts State Police sent out a tweet from its official account asking people to evacuate their homes if they lived in certain areas of the state. To show the locations, they included a screenshot of one of the MSP Watch Center’s computers with a map.

Social media sleuths quickly noticed the bookmarks on the computer were related to a few anti-police violence organizations as well as an anti-Trump organization and a “resistance” calendar of events in the area.

According to WBUR, the first bookmark, “MAAPB,” is Mass Action Against Police Brutality, a group whose stated goal is to “end police brutality and institutional racism,” which is clearly a threat to public safety and should be monitored. If MAAPB is successful in stopping police violence and racism, what the hell would the cops do on days when there weren’t any natural gas explosions?

COMBAT, another bookmarked site, is the Coalition to Organize and Mobilize Boston Against Trump, who say they are a “grassroots, intersectional coalition of students, artists, and workers organizing creatively to resist all forms of oppression.”

Look, I don’t claim to be a criminologist or anything, but whenever you start using words like “intersectional,” “coalition” or “oppression,” you should expect the police to be watching. That’s what they do—oppress intersectional coalitions. It’s literally in the job description.

Another site, the Massachusetts Resistance Calendar was also saved. The site lists upcoming anti-Trump protests around the state.

The state police deleted the tweet and shared another cropped image as soon as they noticed it, but we all know that the internet is undefeated at bringing up old shit, forcing the agency to deny that they were monitoring any groups.

The Massachusetts State Police would only say that they have a responsibility to “prepare for all large, public gatherings,” and released a statement with one of the lamest excuses of all time:

We, obviously, need to know if large numbers of people, for whatever reason, are going to be on public roadways or public spaces, so that we may ensure the safety and rights of those who have gathered as well as of the members of the public around them.

I’m going to have to use that one to see if it works. It sounds as lame as a teenager’s explanation to his mom when he was caught masturbating or when you go to the bathroom at work to wash your hands and it smells like a dookey bomb exploded but someone comes in behind you and thinks you did it, and you really want to explain that your insides don’t smell like rotting roadkill but you don’t know how to say it.

David Propocio, an MSP spokesperson, told The Guardian that: “We do not collect information about – nor, frankly, do we care about – any group’s beliefs or opinions,” but would not comment on the reasoning the groups were bookmarked when pressed about it.

This screenshot was taken at the MSP Watch Center, an information-gathering initiative that is known for monitoring Black Lives Matter, high school anti-racism student groups, and even a black Boston city councilman who happened to mention the word “Ferguson” on Facebook one day.

But I understand this is a public safety initiative, which is why I downloaded the app that tells me when the Krispy Kreme ‘hot’ light comes on. And no, I’m not monitoring it

I obviously, need to know if large numbers of hot, soft, mouthwateringly delicious donuts are going to be coming off the belt so that I may ensure the safety and rights of all pastries as well as the stomachs of the people who want to devour them.

FOCUS: How to Build Progressive Power Print

How to Build Progressive Power

By Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog

ven in these dark times, I am confident that we can defeat Donald Trump and all he stands for. But it will require building a multiracial, middle, and working class coalition dedicated to renewing our democracy and creating an economy that works for all, not just the privileged few. Here’s how:

First: At the heart of this coalition must be deep and abiding commitment to the democratic principles of political equality, equal opportunity, and justice for all.

These same ideals that animated many of us—both white and black Americans—to fight for civil rights and voting rights in the 1960s.

Second: Central to renewing our democracy is getting big money out of politics.

For decades, the wealthy and corporations have flooded our political system with campaign contributions and lobbying dollars. In turn, Washington has rewritten the rules of the economy in their favor. This vicious cycle of money and politics funnels more and more wealth and power to those at the top.

Third: We have to ensure the economy works for all Americans, not just the wealthy and corporations.

Since the 1980s, the wages and economic prospects of the typical American have gone nowhere. Nearly 80 percent now live paycheck to paycheck, and those paychecks have grown less secure.

Addressing these economic hardships requires a bold agenda: a basic income, a jobs guarantee, Medicare-for-All, access to free public colleges and universities, stronger unions, and worker representation on corporate boards.

Fourth and finally: whether you voted for Bernie or Hillary or anybody else, we must put aside our differences.

If we fail to do this, we are playing into the hands of those who seek to divide us. Trump and his enablers will continue to try to divide us, stoking racial divisions, stirring animosity, and breeding confusion and despair. We must not let them.

We have never been a perfect union. Our finest moments have always been when we sought to become more perfect than we had been. Together, we can do so again.

FOCUS: The Case for Indicting the President Print

The Case for Indicting the President

By Michael Avenatti, The New York Times

16 September 18

Justice Department lawyers have said a sitting president cannot be indicted. It’s time to test that proposition by bringing an indictment that can be reviewed by the Supreme Court.

ol Wachtler, a former chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, once famously remarked that grand juries were so easily swayed that they would “>indict a ham sandwich” if a prosecutor requested it. Many times, there is truth to this. But an indictment does not end the process of determining guilt or innocence. It begins it.

Following indictment, criminal defendants can question the validity of the charges, the methods used to acquire the evidence and the evidence itself. They can seek to dismiss a criminal indictment and, if unsatisfied with the ruling, appeal it all the way to the Supreme Court.

The grand jury system has been employed in hundreds of thousands of cases involving all manner of crimes committed by all manner of people. All, that is, except one: the president.

Manafort's Plea Deal Is a Constitutional Crisis, We Just Don't Know It Yet

By Juan Cole, Informed Comment

16 September 18

rump’s campaign manager April-August of 2016, Paul Manafort has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring against the United States. In return for a reduction of his sentence he must answer fully and candidly all the questions asked him by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team about criminal wrongdoing. Since Manafort is alleged to have had close relations with Russian oligarchs, money-launderers and even organized crime, he almost certainly knows about a fair number of crimes.

Mueller is not interested in random crimes, however, but in any that may have been commmited by Trump or his close associates, especially crimes involving contacts with Russia during the 2016 campaign, of which Manafort was the chairman. In that period, Trump would call him 20 times a day. The two men were very close.

A Washington, D. C., court was about to begin a trial against Manafort. Mueller’s side had easily won their first case against Manafort, in Virginia, and the likelihood is that they would have won the Washington one, as well. Manafort was looking at going bankrupt defending himself, and at being sentenced to life in prison (he is 69 so any long sentence amounts to a life sentence).

As it is, Manafort has to give to the Federal government over $40 million in ill-gotten gains. Manafort has been convicted of lobbying for pro-Russian politicians and interests in Ukraine, of not registering as a foreign agent, and of keeping tens of millions of dollars in payments from Russian oligarchs and their Ukrainian counter-parts in banks in Cyprus while never paying any taxes on them. He got paid for doing things like circulating a false charge that Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko (anti-Russian) was guilty of ordering people killed (Manafort said he wanted to “put some stink” on her).

Manafort colluded with an unnamed Israeli official to weaponize “anti-Semitism” for Russian aims in Ukraine, painting Tymoshenko as an anti-Semite. He then put pressure on the Jewish figures in the Obama administration to pressure Obama to oppose Tymoshenko, in favor of the pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych.

The casual way in which the Likud government of Binyamin Netanyahu, prime minister of Israel, throws around charges of anti-Semitism for narrow, everyday political gain has almost entirely undermined the force of the charge. When I see a campaign against Jeremy Corbyn waged by the British Israel lobbies, attempting to smear him as bigotted against Jews because he disagrees with Israeli colonization of the Palestinians, I am inclined to discount it. It is just more Manafortism, in which there is an attempt to have Corbyn Manafortized.

All that speaks to Manafort’s character but it is ancient history. The big story is that he attended the July, 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian agent Natalia Veselnitskaya, in which the Trump campaign expected to receive damaging information on Hilary Clinton from Russian hacking of her accounts. The Russians wanted Magnitsky Act sanctions lifted on President Vladimir Putin’s cronies in return.

Trump himself dictated a description of that meeting which is nothing but a lie. Don Trump, Jr., had called the meeting after receiving an invitation to meet by a high Russian source.

That is, Manafort is potentially in a position to begin putting Trump family members in jail, and to provide the smoking gun to Mueller against Trump himself.

Moreover, since Manafort knows the Russian oligarchs and criminal elements, it is not impossible that he has incidental information about Trump moneylaundering via Moscow.

If Mueller indicts Trump, that is a constitutional crisis. If Mueller hands over irrefutable evidence of criminal wrongdoing to the Department of Justice, that is a constitutional crisis. If he hands the dossier over to Congress, that is a constitutional crisis. This plane does not have a soft landing, folks. Fasten your seatbelts.
