The report begins: "Glenn Beck calls her one of the most dangerous people in the world. 'I'm about 5-foot-6,' Frances Fox Piven tells Weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz. 'I'm 78 years old. My hair is partly grey. I'm quite thin.'"

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

When are they going to commit this cretin for mental illness. Will they wait until someone else is shot? He even looks like Hitler in that picture, the clown is mentally unbalanced and so are his bosses.

+2 # RebellionIntoReason 2011-02-28 06:13
I completely agree with you about the nefarious nature of Beck's Brain. Why, however, must you malign an entire disabled American minority, the mentally ill, by using its very label as a pejorative? I strongly feel you owe us an apology.

We might make note that most of what Beck (and a lot of the Right) accuse their opposition of doing is EXACTLY what they themselves are doing! Simply take their crazy talking points and reverse their direction and you have a pretty good analysis of motivation and schemes. It is a PATTERN. And it's nuts too.

+8 # Lakshmi 2011-02-28 09:06
hms, you are spot-on, both in your observation that it is precisely what they rail against the most that is what they themselves "do," and in stating the fact that it is far more than just Beck who does this - it is endemic to the Radical Right. This would make for fascinating sociological/po litical science research.

Would somebody please ban Glenn Beck from public media.
It is especially repulsive that he should pick on Ms. Pivens, a senior citizen or anyone for that matter. He pollutes our media with the toxic waste that slings at the American Public.
Enough Already.

EB, "Would somebody please ban Glenn Beck from public media." "Enough already." Amen to that! And that MUST include RSN! This "man", and I use that term most sarcastically, simply needs his mouth washed out with soap, his toy's (microphone)tak en away and be sent to bed without any supper. I'd say a "trip to the woodshed" was in order but I suppose someone would castigate me for advocating violence. To hell with it...I'll say it anyway. NO MORE ARTICLES ON GLENN BECK AND PLEASE,OH PLEASE,OH PLEASE,OH PLEASE LET ME! BE THE ONE TAKING THIS BOY! TO THE WOODSHED!

To carry on so frenetically about a half-century-ol d article is extreme derangement. Beck is certifiably insane -- he may be constitutionall y entitled to free rant, but not to the physical endangerment of others.

+16 # Ralph Averill 2011-02-28 11:19
Do not dismiss Beck as being insane; he is a great deal more sinister. He knows exactly what he is doing and why. He is the cold, calculating propaganda minister for Murdoch, the Koch brothers, et al. He knows he is manipulating the genuine insane people who shoot liberal congressmen/wom en and send murderous hate mail to authors of 45 yr. old liberal essays.

+15 # giraffe 2011-02-28 01:36
And the FBI and police don't have enough money to fight Murdock/Koch to help her? Clearly the Stupreme Court allowing corporations to fund GOP campaigns with unlimited non-transparent sums of money -- will allow Kock brothers to buy the USA and our democracy.

MSNBC - stop referencing the 07 Obama message about marching with the protestors - one of those crazy GOP people working for the Gov will probably shoot him and then we'd have Boner as VP -- heading to President -- UGH

When are we going to take back our airwaves? "News" stations like FOX shouldn't be able to lie, as the courts in Florida ruled they could do 10 years ago in a case. We've lost our way and need to have a real fist fight, mano on mano.

It is notable that rightwing rhetoric produces smear campaign with impunity, while the left in divulging "classified" information is outlawed. Does this mean that American political/judic ial policy is rightwing? Such as Beck, Limbaugh, O'reilly could not continue their reign without a nod from war room bastions.

+25 # Patch 2011-02-28 03:16
Glenn Beck is more than nuts. He is as dangerous as Hitler and his aim is the same. The Repbulican Mafia, whom Beck supports, have set out to remove the middle class altogether and turn us into a oligarchy.

I am grateful to ms piven and her husband for this inclusive, fair, and necessary invitation to all those who should have been receiving the help they deserved. I am a foster, adoptive and bio mom. Many people in need, are too ashamed to ask for help, when they need it, due to the stigma associated with the social service programs. These fair minded individuals realized that and did the right thing by writing the paper. Kudos to both....the world would be a better place with more like them. I see firsthand the effects of poverty, in the childrens eyes that I care for. To ms piven....thank you....i appreciate what you did....may god bless you in every way.

I don't know Beck personally, but I really hate that guy.

+24 # Rara Avis 2011-02-28 07:01
The fact that Beck must reach back 45 years to an important, true, and wonderful academic article where he draws completely the wrong conclusions is a sign of either desperation or lack of intelligence or both.

Whenever he advances some conspiracy theory about the left destroying the country he fails to understand that if we were really that smart and powerful and all encompassing he and Rupert Murdoch would already be inhabiting jail cells in the Peoples Republic of the United States Prison.

If lefties could do even one third of what they are accused of things would be a great deal better in this nation. Ms. Piven ought to appear on Glenn's show and demonstrate she is not a monster and has no means of hurting anybody. Then the real source of the hurt would be truly visible for all to see.

We need to keep in mind. Glenn Beck is an actor. He reads the script written for him by Rupert Murdoch. If you need to get mad, make it about Rupert Murdoch. Glenn Beck is an actor.

Like his hero, Ronald Reagon? His masters, who hide behind his vicious mouth, must love the effect he delivers for them. They have other clowns in the closet too. Some bring out the anger in the audience, and others bring out the stupidity.

What more can I say. I despise Beck! He is a lowly, desperate man, probably born in a disfunctional family. His whole schtick is to make people paranoid so he can schill for the gold hoarding company. He's nothing more than a lowly con man.

I agree, Murdoch is the real problem. Without him the nut balls would be broadcasting on CB radios from the cab of their semi trucks. I'm a truck driver and I can tell you there are plenty if nut balls driving trucks that could take a job with Murdoch, and these people are some of the very ones that are being hurt by the compression of the economy and citizens rights.

I learn something new every day. I would have thought that, without Murdoch and other providers of wingnut welfare, the likes of Beck, David Hitch (editorial cartoonist of butter sculptures), Charles Krauthammer, David Limbaugh, Michael Reagan, Bruce Tinsley (perpetrator of "Mallard Fillmore"), and others of much ilk would be on street corners loudly repeating the latest broadcast from Radio Free Neptune, live and direct as it came in on their dental work.

Glenn Beck is also a citizen, and nominally, a human being. He carries the same moral responsibility for his actions, words, and choice of occupation as anyone else, and bit more given his leverage in the media. I will not grant him a Nuremberg defense as you suggest as he is not worthy even of that, being under no duress whatever to perform his task, as arguably a Nazi war criminal might have been. His messages in letter preserve plausible deniability for all consequences but in tone are virtual direct orders to loose cannon gun toting "patriots" to take action, as they have in the recent past. Looking to his bosses is essential but does not let Beck off the hook for being the willing media hatchet man, nor for his ulterior motive of using fear to promote precious metal scams that fleece his audience and line Beck's pockets. On the right it all about money.

Lest we begin to give him any credit, might he conceivably have a research staff that share a few crumbs of the cake?

Don't get mad, get even. Turn off the Faux news. Don't buy from sponsors of Beck, Hannity, and other Fox blowhards and blondes. As much as possible buy food and goods from local farmers and local union shops and manufacturers. Live lightly on the earth and dance however you can. Laugh, it makes you smart.

I seem to recall seeing a picture of Beck in a Nazi uniform....what more do we need to know? Let's remember that Hitler couldn't have come to power without big money behind him and he promosed them he would destroy the labor unions. He did just that and everyone ended up being part of the National Labor Front. Just what you see being done today with the funding of Murduck, Kroch, and other fascists. Beck, like Hitler, is simply their puppet!

+7 # Buckles 2011-02-28 11:53
The real problem with the Airwaves, that we suppose to own, all these protests should be directed to the FCC, they sit on thier duffs while dingbat Beck advocates targeting US Citizens.

+6 # Lee Black 2011-02-28 12:00
Since Beck revels in attention the best reaction would be to ignore him. The more he is the attention of MSNBC, Jon Stewart, etc. the more he feels empowered.

The problem with this is, if all the sunny side people ignored him he would still get the rapt attention of those on the dark side. They would listen to his lies and see them as truth.

So is it best to ignore him as an ignorant gnat or to draw attention to his lies?

+3 # Robyn 2011-02-28 20:35
What makes me so amazed is that he is taking an article written in 1966, a time of great social upheaval and is using it to attack a 78 year old woman. Beck is insane, and as for Australia's worst export Rupert Murdoch, he is a thoroughly corrupt individual.

+4 # stanleyhowardschwart 2011-02-28 21:05
Glenn Beck has proven himself a ranting, ignorant, although brilliant commentator. He knows what he is doing for the reactionary people of the USA and probably for "Corporate America" who back him and encourage his demagog advocacy of bigotry, misinformation, distortion, and worse. Because we are a nation with freedom of speech, he has a place on the air, but I quit listening and watching him years ago when I discovered how baseless his allegations are. He has enough viewers to retain his sponsors, but those who do promote his programs with their advertising lose customers with intellect and education.

Maybe if we all IGNORE this dangerous lunatic, he'll just simply fade away into the sunset.
