The first paragraph: "In recent weeks, conservative media have been consumed by 'Obama Derangement Syndrome,' accusing President Obama of being insane, of colluding with Russian spies, of trying to create a civil war and implement one world government, among other things, while also claiming that his administration is trying to control everything under the sun, including the Internet and, inexplicably, your toilet."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

There's more than enough derangement to go around. Both sides are acting like Obama's administration is any different from Bush's.
It's all theater to make the audience think it matters which party's in the white house, when they're both controlled by the vampire capitalists of the corporate oligarchy.

Citizens remain hopeful, therefore do not see what has happened to the country, those in public office, and most especially anyone running for president. I say "running" tongue in cheek. NOBODY gets put up for president without the support and approval of those breathtakingly powerful and wealthy goups and corporations.

Those in the media and government who continue to belch hate and acid criticism are doing so to keep the populace squabbling, upset, and divided, therefore not seeing the truth: there IS no difference in the two parties except in style.

The death of Robert Byrd was significant, and should be. He marks the end of an era. He navigated the penumbra of the transition between growing government corruption and globalization, and the mud we are left with.

Better stick together folks. There are few representing us any longer.

We already live in a monarchy or oligarchy. This country was founded, and Constitution written, when the whole country had only 5 million people. So what that we have internet communications today; these "representative s" only can read so much mail. We hope they pass good laws (benevolent dictators). Some say that the "Declaration of Independence" wasn't law, only the Constituiton, but it was legal enough to constitute a legal country declaring a legal war, and therefore, unless the Revolution was illegal and we are not a country, it should be legal.

Good points miss_ion. I have discussed this aspect of the U.S. numerous times. We are not the country of 200 years ago and therefore changes in governing were inevitable, not to mention the non-participati on of over 300 million people in that government. Voting is not enough, but is corrupt at best.

althought both U.S. parties are owned buy big capitalism their is a distinction between neo-libs and neo-cons. Currently, we will move forward or backwards. Obama could facilitate bottom-up revolution but only we, revolutionary thinkers, can provide for working ppl the neccassary analysis to move forward in the face of the current economic crisis confusion and political propaganda. Obama, the pragamist, is trying to empower Congress to pass reform legislation which is why the U.S. system makes change a series of compromises while real change comes from below out of economic necessity. Only the people can battle the forces of capitalism through organized, collective resistence.

+7 # Guest 2010-07-05 11:52
Your key word here is "organized". It is almost impossible to get citizens organized in any meaningful way, thanks to the divisiveness encouraged by the government and their media lackies, not to mention government agents infiltrating groups, computers, phone conversations, you name it. You saw what happened in Toronto, I suppose.

If there were some agreement within large groups, we would have a greater chance. Civil war is not the answer. We would kill each other while those in power sit cozily at home.

As far as neo-liberal and neo-conservativ e, Obama is both. If he were to go too far in making "change" his chain would get yanked big time.

It goes beyond the illusion of inclusion to which you refer. Hispanics and Haitians are 'illegal aliens' as opposed to the settler and pioneers who occupied this land. U r taught to fear the black street mugger while Bernie Madoff steals your grandparents retirement income. Iraq was a military threat but we have bases all over the world. Pres. Obama is against the U.S. but it was Reagan who began the deregulations that led to the recession, Bush Sr. who continued the process and Bush Jr. who put Bin Laden's kin on a plane out of the country. Your job went overseas under Republican Presidents, followed by your children to protect corporate interests and generate income for the military industrial complex. If Bush had been able to privatize soc security, what would your retirement look like now? Haliburton, Xe, BP and AIG makes billions while conservatives opposed extending unemployment funds. But you are safe from the non-white other, and happy. Aren't you?

I say these guys are all taking drugs !! It is the only explanation that makes any sense. Now you see that is exactly the kind of undocumented statement that Beck and co. love to put on the air waves about other people. If we say it often enough maybe everybody will believe it, and then Beck and co. will have go on the defensive to fight rumors that everyone has taken for the truth. Although, the way these guys are behaving, it could be true.

These downright lies are like crying "FIRE" in a theater. They are not free speech. They are liar warfare. What has happened to accountability. It used to be that if someone said something outrageous the press called them on it. Today the press repeats the lies until our uninformed public believes it. Truth is less and less important. Perception is becoming all that matters. Our founding fathers believed an educated electorate was required for a democracy to work. Our democracy is certainly going down the tube, but it isn't because of people like President Obama. It's because of the unethical, lying, right-wing entertainment industry which passes itself off as media.

+6 # Guest 2010-07-05 10:34
Dick, And our founding fathers believed that "white, propertied men" were the only ones fit to receive what would be necessary to "Constitute" an "educated electorate". Beck, Limbaugh and all the rest of the right wing flame throwers are incendiary "entertainers" who have found a fertile ground of knuckle dragging neanderthals out there who love getting pissed because they're told they're being dissed. But honestly, enough about the "Founders wisdom". They were merely trying to erect their own unique brand of "Corporate fiefdom" but made the "mistake" of using (and printing)a set of lofty and ambitious goals that immigrants for generations took to mean something more than empty rhetoric.

Yep, that's why, since Obama took office, you have more gun rights, better health care payment rights, more protection from outrageous bank fees, more job creation, and are paying less in taxes. Damn incompetents!

I'm not even vaguely impressed. His compromises have been so pathetic that the results have little significance to day to day life. Too many still carry guns; health care is and will remain a nightmare and luck, not competence, bares greater influence; old fees nixed...and new ones dealt in requiring future legislation to correct these; and more jobs? When did Obama bring back the industrial and manufacturing base of this country?; and paying less taxes? Who cares. I'm paying less taxes because I'm broke. I don't give a rip if my tax rate is lower. It simply doesn't matter any more.
Now tell me again what Obama has done for me. I still say nothing.

For an instructive comparison try pulling up some of the more vicious criticism of Lincoln and FDR. All you have to do is change the name to Obama. The reactionary defenders of the status quo are all cut from the same cloth and all use the same arguments and the same ad hominem attacks. Terms such as socialist, Nazi, communist, one-worlder, dictator, Hitler, and progressive are used interchangeably and repeatedly. In terms of change, there are always a thousand reactionaries appointed to guard the pass and they have all been schooled by the same reactionary voices of the past. John Calhoun, Father Coughlin, the John Birch Society, the Dixiecrats, the proponents of the "Southern Strategy"...the ir political and philosophical descendants are the voices on the extreme right (rapidly becoming the center) of the Republican party. The few moderates left standing are quietly hiding their faces in shame over what their once admirable party has become.

The conservative broadcast media--especial ly Beck and Limbaugh--were the cheerleaders for the most disastrous administration and the most disastrous economic and foreign policies in the history of our country, at least for the middle class. If you are a member of the wealthiest 2%, you did very well as you were the beneficiary of the shift of wealth out of the middle and into your already bulging pockets. Has everyone forgotten just how wrong these guys were? Why are they still deemed credible by anyone?

All of these ultra right wing blowhards are political organizers for the republican party. Most of them trace their careers to Roger Ailes, now president of Fox News but always the media strategist for the republicans. This is how the republicans mobilize their base. THis is how the republicans shape issues in their favor. This is 24-hour campaigning. Moderaates like Obama really don't have a chance. They will take him down in 2012. His only change would be to become the real progressive that some people thought they voted for -- fire all the Wall Street bankers in his administration. Clean the Bushites out of the Pentagon and end the GWOT. If Obama did this, the right-wing blowhard would howl like gut-shot dogs. But who cares about them. People would see a return to "normalcy" following the dark night of Regan-Bush-Clin ton-Bush republican rule. Yes, Clinton was the best president the republican had. They browbeat him into following their agenda, just as they are doing to Obama.

This is brainwashing on a massive scale, political scandalmongerin g using the TV and internet to whip up the passions of voters who are easily swayed by entertainers who pander to their bigotry and fear. The only people who benefit from this rhetoric are those positioned to take advantage of the turmoil. And those whose lives and families are being put into jeopardy are the ones who buy into and act on this nonsense.

No, folks. The heyday of the US is over and gone, and the culprits responsible are those who benefit and those who suffer the most for their rank stupidity.

Now, can we stop trying to "understand" what's behind all of this? Accept the fact that whenever these sore losers are out of absolute control over our government and our lives they will have a temper tantrum that any two-year-old would be proud of until they get their way.

We just need to ask ourselves one thing: Would we rather listen to the temper tantrums of the right-wing, or would we rather give in again and have, yet another version of george bush jr. in the White House and newt theGrinch in control of the House of Representatives ? That question is the only thing that matters.

I'd rather listen to them whine. IN FACT, IT'S MUSIC TO MY EARS!

Quietly, Michelle Obama has been trying to put grocery stores that carry vegetables into the south. Everywhere you see a red state, there are no grocery stores. In the past in America, much of that area suffered from pulagra, which is niacin deficiency. They could have other deficiencies too: a B-12 deficiency has the same results. What results? Dementia, mental retardation, depression, violent behavior; all in younger adults. Beck, Limbaugh, etc. are doing it for the money, but all those malnourished people won't know better. But who has kept the veges off the table in favor of corn corn corn? It isn't the first time: back to the Incas people's bones showed marrow problems indicative of this kind of anemia. Yes, there could be civil war, caused by the equivalent of these zombies yelling "brains!" It would be funny, but they are all armed, dangerous, and really could pull a Hitler on the rest of the country.

I also believe America's halycon days are over. Why did the Soviet Union collapse? It wasn't because Reagan walked around the Berlin wall 7 times and caused it to fall (or is that another myth?), but because they put so much money into armaments and war that they eventually destroyed their domestic economy.
Sound familiar?
Of course, China is doing the same, but it is benefiting from some American trade policies so it and other countries are doing our manufacturing for us, and costing us jobs. We don't seem to understand that our own policies are undermining our strengths. There is no reason that America can't also manufacture laptops and washing machines and snowblowers. It's just cheaper to buy them from China and other countries.
Anyway, I think our heyday is over. I would think that might not be all bad, but who wants China as THE superpower in the world?

ABSOLUTELY i agree!!! when the media is no longer free but is run by the corporations (sam zell, rupert murdoch, et al) the country is held hostage. it does NOT matter how ridiculous the claim, the more it's repeated, the more legitimacy it attains. wouldn't it be nice if there was a rational outlet that had as much airtime as fox and its clones?! repeat a lie often enough and it becomes embedded truth.

During Nixon, right-wing was smaller, but Nixon promoted the idea of a "silent majority" and unfair left-wing media. Even then, the media was getting richer moving right. Jimmy Carter hit baby boomers with the "wage-price freeze" when we were leaving college, and minimum wage became our salaries, and we didn't trust gov't. Then Reagon deregulated and caused inflation, and right-wing hype. The left-wing reporters started to be:shot...And along came right-wing radio. A majority considered those "black helicopters" a joke from the X-files, and Fox News didn't have a stranglehold. Now, they are huge, and the "balanced" media is also right-wing, never reporting that Iraq was illegal until years later, reporting on a few tea-party protestors and not thousands of progressives. This is a lot different.

These idiots talk about all the freedoms Obama is taking away?? They just don't get it do they? If ANYONE would have said anything even remotely close to these things about Bush that these idiots have said about Obama, you can bet there would have been new laws, phone taps, trumped up charges etc, etc. They would have been labeled "unpatriotic" (which again goes to the 14 points of fascism). For God's sake, Bush enacted the Patriot Act which if you read it, is the farthest thing from freedom this country has ever seen!!!
It is a sad fact that the biggest shift of wealth in the history of this country happened during the Bush years. This will NEVER be shifted back to any type of equality again. These people spew garbage

We can't expect broadcast media (that includes TV, cable, newspapers and radio)to clarify the situation as they are part of the corporate power wed to the rightist state. This is the 1930s in replay, with America in the role of Germany, on the verge of brown-shirt takeover. Quick, before it is too late! Get a B-12 shot and eat some niacin. You need some balanced facts about the news. There are people out there giving you opinions, and others giving you facts. Fact: Obama has a birth certificate from Hawaii, and yes, they did have birth certificates indicating U.S. birth. Fact: the Constitution states that the Executive Branch (President and Cabinet) may do everything he has done and more. Fact: his "backers" have a lot less money than the tea party, which has it money from health insurance businesses and oil companies. Fact: Americans are those born in the U.S. or naturalized citizens; Americans may live in rural areas or cities. Obama would not start a civil war: would you? Fact: Obama goes to a Christian church, but has a name he inherited. Fact: the letter "c" if followed by an "e" makes the "s" sound, which is why the country Kenya is spelled with a "k".

Man, that's some weapons-grade fact-free crazy right there. The president was born in Hawaii, a fact verified by the (Republican) governor of the state, its Director of Health, and its Registrar of Vital Statistics. The president has never said he was born in Kenya; that's a flat lie. He's not a Muslim and never was. He has written movingly of his conversion to Christianity (from being areligious, as he was brought up by his agnostic mother) in 1988.

They are simple enraged because they no longer control everything. And like Southerners after starting then losing the Civil War, bitterly remorseful because they know when they did control things, they blew it over and over again. Couldn't do anything right--maybe we should henceforth call them the Wrong. And what a coincidence--it starts with a big W! These freaks are beyond paranoid. Yes, they are also dangerous parasites. Regarding the First Amendment, isn't this the equivalent of yelling "fire!" in a crowded area. When does this kind of speech become sedition?

The USA as we knew it of Chevy's, Apple Pie and Hot Dogs does not exist. The issue is we have dumbed the population. laziness is prevalent. Video Games is the norm. A form of brain candy that neither educates or informs the masses but only detracts them into an unreal life of illusion. War is the only export we produce we can not even make the ammo needed and buy from other countries like Taiwan ect...... We buy junk from China and others to save 20-50 dollars and eliminate many jobs of americans to the multi-nationals pleasure. Our colleges are full of asians from everywhere but the USA and the Good needed professions are taken by Foreigners for Doctors, Engineers and Computer technology. Yes we have sold our selves out and have become the Laziest, most obese non-educated 1st world country who will not be satisfied till we are a 3rd world nation like the f*cked up Philippines run by a religious entity from the 16th century. Till we can focus on hard work and education we lose!
