Robert Parry: "When I watched the last US combat battalions leave Iraq on Wednesday night, I couldn't help but recall the scene when the last Soviet troops departed Afghanistan on February 15, 1989. In both cases, the two governments soft-pedaled the hard truth about the strategic defeats that the withdrawals represented."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Every time I think of Paul Wolfowitz I picture him saying "It's hard to conceive that it would take more forces to provide stability in post-Saddam Iraq than it would take to conduct the war itself and to secure the surrender of Saddam's security forces and his army."

It couldn't have been more wrong to the tune of billions of dollars, thousands of American deaths and unknown Iraqi deaths and destruction.

And now we are going to listen to him as if he knows what he is talking about?

Iraq, before Saddam and after Saddam is about Sunni's and Shi'a and their inability to co-exist. Our 7 year interruption won't change that.

Thanks to Robert Parry for bringing up reality instead of wishful thinking.

To many who witnessed the carnage, the atrocities, the lies, the bankrupt of a nation, the "withdrawal" in called "cut & run!"

Iraq and Afghanistan will follow the example of Korea, Vietnam, the bay of pigs, etc.,.

The US military is a spent force. Yet, it has 40 four star generals and thousands of colonels who are getting paid and pensioned to keep our young men and women dying.

There must be a better way.

The mind-set that has been planted in NGOs by the dispersal of neocons, including many who should have faced indictments and war crimes trials, augurs future evils. Obama wimped out and opened the way for neocons to regroup and exert control. Parry's realism is not shared by the Administration.

The truth is hard to sell. Marketing is one thing; truth is another. You can't hope to make money on truth. To pretend that truth-telling (and, for that matter, the provision of healthcare, education, or financial counseling) are best served by private profit-making enterprises is to ignore the increasing failure of Americans to adapt to many kinds of reality -- failures that are costing us dearly, and that will inevitably lead to our collapse. Is the public to be served, as well as exploited? Or only exploited?

Obama is a huge disappointment. If the President doesn't take responsibility for making the government actually work, nobody will. Nobody else has the necessary authority.

I feel so very weary and heartsick of presidents and other politicians who intentionally choose the wrong path, after their platforms have been clearly misrepresented, who then habitually pump up the electorate for failure in disguise. What the hell is going on?!
