Davidson writes: "American nuns are sending two leaders of their main organization to Rome - on a mission, not a pilgrimage."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Kudos to those nuns. What they are doing is so much better than what their superiors want them to do.

Benedict XVI, formerly known as the Nazi Ratzinger, wants discipline.

Many years a good friend and a priest, a true lover of the church and a man faithful to Christ, declared that Catholic Church was disintegrating, rotting from the inside. I have to agree.

Too many self serving, women hating, pedophile protecting, cardinals and bishops are in power. This will pass. Hopefully soon. luvdoc
putrid leadership.

I hope these representatives of LCWR are prepared to be threatened with excommunication.

This could be a Galileo-like moment.

i left that church more than 50 years ago. for this very reason that they suppress denigrate and demean the saints while they are alive and they sign pacts with devils like mussolini franco salizar duvalier rick santorim

Martin Luther was chastised by his church. Sometimes you have to do what you know is right, regardless of what the human leadership says. But, opposing the leadership can be very lonely.

I feel for these women but I still suggest they leave this church run by EVIL men. If they wish to remain Nuns join the Episcopal Church they would not face the evil that these men do. As for the bishops I suggest that they purchase their Millstones as Christ suggested.

Nuns on the run. Back in the 60's we thought we overcame mascagni and that women in general had gained in status. But hate towards women in general seems to be resurfacing. Ancient attitudes seems to always be there just beneath the surface. Mankind appears to be stuck on a primative merry go round - True compassion is the essence of most religions and is then corrupted by power, a typical human response unfortunately.
+5 # rblee 2012-06-04 11:12
Religion IS the corruption of the human impulse to compassion by the will to power. The real power, as manifested in their ability--and choice in the matter--to bring new life into being and nurture it, lies with women. It's only a matter of time before the patriarchy gets its comeuppance. The Catholic edifice is crumbling around the edges. A very good sign!

If the nuns started their own church, I'd join...

80% of Atheists are male, 20% are female. Religion will change once churches empty out. Come on ladies what is keeping you ?

Oh, my. One group of religious folks beating up on another group of religious folks for being - dare I say it? - too humane, too concerned about people's lives away from the ethereal realms of doctrine.

Yawn. I empathize with the nuns, but expecting the hierarchy of their church to wake up and discover that it's 2012 AD is asking a lot. It's a male-dominated religion with rules that only make sense if you accept the notion that every Pope is infallible and everything that follows.

You sign on board for that, well, good luck to you.
+8 # RLF 2012-06-04 06:21
I think, actually, you could say it is a closeted gay male dominated religion. Their fear and anger are often unleashed on women.

"The Vatican is stating the obvious, and writers like Amy, who have no understanding whatsoever of the finer points of Catholic theology (or Church politics) are in no position to criticize or contradict the bishops. Feminism has ruined many lives in the past 50 years and damaged many great institutions, but the significance of this is lost on the arrogant careerists who benefit from this monstrous ideology." This quote from a post in the New Yorker ...

I feel appalled and disgusted by the brain-washed who choose to ignore the mortal sins of the Catholic church's hierarchy. What does it take to make people understand its penchant for grooming children as sex objects for pedophile priests and who invade, dictate to, and control the personal, God-given lives of its members? I find this cult to be absolutely impious.

Don't you love the smoke and mirrors of superstition? What a waste of humanity!

That photo of the Cardinal tells it all. When was the last time he had to relate to real people who suffer, look for compassion and understanding? Self-absorbed in his pontifical garb, pretending there is still power in his position and respect if not fear from the underlings. So many of us former Catholic school kids and devout parishioners have had it with this whole charade. The Emperor has no clothes (tiaras, sashes, black and red and purple coverings). A dwindling old boys' club hanging onto symbols without substance, lashing out at threats to their privilege. Making nice now with like-minded zealots from the evangelical right who used to ridicule us "Micks" an call us idolators. A Church that stood beside the poor and the workers that now persecutes the few nuns and priests that still do. A church that boasted of a rich theological and contemplative tradition now empty of spiritual credibility except for a few, mostly nuns like Joan Chittester and Miriam McGillis. The spiritual vacuum is being filled by Buddhists like Thich Nhat Hanh and Pema Chodron and other authentic voices. The photo is of someone who just doesn't get it and wouldn't have much to offer if he did. Hence the pose. The real sign of trouble? The Irish are leaving, too.

Clearly and beutifully stated, and even with a visual aid - that obscene photo of the Cardinal!

How ANY woman could align herself with the "church" and think she would be treated as Jesus would treat her, amazes me. The entire institution has been corrupt from the day it was begun. "popes" have been fornicators for Millennia, if not with their bretheren, then, with countless women who serviced them on a regular basis as evidence by their dozens of illegitimate offspring. The Borgias were a particularly nasty bunch if any credence can be given to their infamous Heritage. Buying and selling the "Favors" of the "church" goes on and on. ANY sin can be forgiven if enough is donated to them. Jesus said, "Sell what you have and follow me. It is better to give than to receive, Love one another, as I have loved you, Do unto others as you would have done unto you", etc., concepts that are anathema to the "church". Why bother with a "pope"? THIS one hardly fits the description of "Christ's Vicar on Earth". He needs to go back and read his New Testament and learn how a REAL Christian is SUPPOSED to behave. These good women should rePudiate the "church" and begin their own Religious Order to fulfill their desire to help their Communities rather than trying to adhere to the tired OLD Dogma of tired old men!

All the political subjects are ideological and attacks on mostly women and gays (etc) but the Catholic Church is part of the 1% and to me the 1% is diverting our attention from what they are REALLY aiming to do to the World (in our case, to our Democracy)

Who is funding the GOP/TP? Koch and unknown huge super-packs of unknown people. Voter supressive tactics are now law in 36 states. The DOJ waited too long so I don't know if the Dems will have their vote counted.

The GOP/TP want to take all "entitlements" (which we paid into BTW) away and lower taxes on top 1% -- but there are other sinister tactics afoot.

Geitner said "oh well" when J.P. Morgan made a $3B mistake (of our money) and -- you all know the problems we face if we are ruled by GOP/TP.

While I think the attack on the Nuns is as phoney as a woman doesn't know "if she should have an abortion" and so has to "get permission from non-docs" -- etc. WE MUST WORRY ABOUT THE REAL PROBLEMS -- i.e. the GOP/TP.

If you are in a voter-challenge d state - please write you DOJ or the US DOJ and do it now to assure that the Dems CAN GET REGISTERED by "special means" before 11/2012.

We have the goods on these creeps and now must force the "police" (DOJ, President, etc) allow each and every American an avenue to vote.

Don't give up - -start yelling at your and other state Senators/Reps (Dems, of course) --

ONLY women can save the Church; the men are pigs. Only women can save Catholicism, the men caved to the power temptation long ago. Only women can save Christianity; a majority of men cannot relate to Jesus. Only women can save America; most U.S. men care more about machismo than peace, liberty, justice, compassion, community, sustainability. Women are going to have to take control in order to survive, & SOON.

Watching the Church stumble into the eighteenth Century has been tragicomedy. A bunch of duffus men running around in skirts chasing little boys. Too disconnected to do any real social work because the hierarchy are pack of Facist fools.
Now they are going after the nuns Hey Mittens Romney is a Mormon not your Catholic President.
Hey the big problem is going to feed the too many people is the basis for human extinction.
Compassion starts when each child gets enough to eat.
The men in-charge there are doing perverted thinking.

The Roman Church will not be happy until they find themselves in the midst of another Reformation. Screw the whole bunch of them.
+14 # Robyn 2012-06-03 21:24
I applause those nuns although I doubt that the Pope will listen to what they have to say though. This is why religion spoils everything. These women are more concerned with helping the poor and dispossessed not condemning gays.

Isn't there a nearly 1000 year old prophesy that this pope is the second to last pope ever? The last pope is to be called, Peter of Rome.

After that happens, all hell breaks loose.

Sounds like everything is on schedule.

I find it tremendously sad that intelligent and capable woman waste their energy and virtue on this decrepit and morally bankrupt organization. The photo of the Cardinal says it all. I accept that most people cannot conduct their lives without the belief in some sort of deity,,but in the wide range of religions to be chosen from, do you have to embrace this one?
