Ted Koppel: "The attacks of September 11, 2001, succeeded far beyond anything Osama bin Laden could possibly have envisioned."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

I am still puzzled by the huge number of people who seems certain the bin Laden master minded the 9/11 attacks. Where is proof? All I see is obfuscation, cover up, and false information. Where are the facts? This appears to me to be nothing more than a myth that has been perpetrated on the World to vindicate the actions of the great nation as it attempts to gain and maintain control of petroleum resources. I notice SHELL OIL has an add embedded in Mr. Koppel's commentary.....
+14 # Guest 2010-09-11 12:47
Why did'nt Mr Koppel say this out loud when he had the platform to do it I and so many here and in Europe could see it like a train coming down on us with no brakes on Ted Koppel was in a position where he could have used the platform of TV to try to diffuse to insanity of going to war with Iraq and if he had been listening to his conscience and not to the war advocates and not gone along with the idea "all that oil will pay for it " mumbo jumbo he could have made a difference.
+6 # Guest 2010-09-11 15:21
Mr. Koppel is correct as far as he went and so are you. He did not mention oil and arms sales and he did not mention Israel. He has been an ardent supporter of Israel and used his platform to plant the very notions he now decries as being destructive. It was a collusion of interests that found a perfect opportunity in the 9/11 attacks to make fortunes and carry out schemes decades in the making. We really know very little about Bin Laden and what part he played and if he had envisioned how quickly and stupidly we would self-destruct. The worst part is becoming so much less free in every respect using security as an excuse. Worse yet, nine years down the road and we are continue scaring ourselves into tighter measures with increasing costs.

Too bad Mr. Koppel did not mention his part in the mess.
+14 # Texas Aggie 2010-09-11 13:18
Mr. Koppel left out quite a bit. Terrorists aren't out to conquer our country. They wouldn't know what to do with it if we gave it to them. What they want to do is destroy our society, and in this we have assisted them wholeheartedly. We have the Patriot Act. We have illegal wire tapping. We have the FBI doing illegal searches. We have admonitions to watch what we say. We have jerks deliberately and needlessly antagonizing Moslems so that al Qaeda gets all the recruits it needs. We have a divided populace that reacts with irrational fear whenever there is an event. Our country is playing into exactly what bin Laden said, "he is going to give us a free hand to spend ourselves into bankruptcy." How dumb can one nation be?
+9 # Guest 2010-09-11 14:39
We are spending ourselves into bankruptcy, from the Bailouts to the halfass "war" in iraq.

I mean come on, the most expensive and arguably most powerful military in the world vs. WWII equipment and Soviet Surplus, it should've been slightly more one-sided than my foot vs. cockroaches! The very fact that it's an Endless Stalemate WAS for profit of Corporations, but the worst profiteering is in rebuilding what the terrorists keep blowing up--and RE-rebuilding when they blow THAT up! If you cut your own power cables and blow up your own driveway, how many times would you expect someone else to pay for it to be fixed?

America keeps paying our enemies, rather than just stomping them!
+5 # Guest 2010-09-11 15:50
What war? What enemies? Koppel's point was well made in that we respect. We are fighting an imaginary enemy. The real has not been engaged because the propaganda machine keeps them in power.
+6 # Guest 2010-09-11 15:44
Yes, and we still have people detained with out possibility of freedom who have never been charged with anything, who were tortured and because those responsible for crimes against humanity have more power, justice cannot be done. As long as we resist bringing the guilty to account, our decline will continue and accelerate.
+7 # Guest 2010-09-11 13:50
That's the American Way - blame the messenger for the message. Get real people, it ain't Ted's fault. Look in the friggin' mirror.
+4 # Guest 2010-09-11 14:04
Ted Koppell or should it be Ted Kopout was part of the media machine that fueled the fire in the first place. Ted why if Bin Laden is, as you state, the mastermind of the 911 attacks, is this not listed in the FBI's Most wanted list under Bin Laden. Perhaps you know something that the FBI is unaware of.

This article is just a continuation of the MSM corporate whitewash of American aggression in the name of the war on terror. Disgusting!
+5 # Guest 2010-09-11 14:07
Correct. Far Beyond what Bin Laden was capable of, even! That's because he (and 'The Team') played 'patsy'. The scapegoats ...were simply that. It was not his (their) design or creation. He just supplied the stupids to do the job. (If they were even on board the aircraft!)

There is no way that motley crew planned this. As the truth burned with them, we'll never know what their roles were, if any!

Oh, ya . All the evidence was conveniently carted away immediately, too, (just to be sure no thermite/other traces were found)
+5 # Guest 2010-09-11 15:56
I agree. I really doubt that most of the hijackers knew what the plan was and were recruited for their gullibility and blind obedience. We will never know how many were involved or what they were told.
+6 # Guest 2010-09-11 14:21
I remembered reading right after Bush suggested to bin Laden to allow the oil pipe line, that a statement was declared to bin Laden, if not allowed we will bury you. After that we had our Reichstag, blamed Laden, and Muslims. The Taliban had been supposed friends of Bush Sr. and was on the CIA payroll. Then all of a sudden the al Quada came out of no where. The relatives of bin Laden are long time friends, and were on vacation with the Bush family on the day of the attack, and on the only plane allowed to fly the skies out of the country. Just like the lies about Iraq, the truth will come out in the future that it was not Muslims, or Laden. I feel bin Laden was killed a long time ago, and some poor look-a-like will be presented to make the CIA look good. I may be one of the few that firmly believes this.
+4 # Guest 2010-09-11 15:13
I believe that someone with power is letting the terrorist leader(s) live, whether out of historical "friendship" or some kind of twisted "Professional Courtesy" between rich people--or they might just be BRIBING their way out! American troops are deeply underpaid, and it works on our southern border, so why not on enemy soil?
There was also some B movie I watched a long time ago with Americans ESCORTING the terrorist leader out of a country, so that the conventional forces wouldn't find him, as a punishment to that country! Byzantine, but I can't unilaterally DENY it, as our Government has OPENLY prevented the prosecution of a secure border and pulled back at several junctures when hitting a little harder would've if not wiped OUT the enemy, at least forced their surrender, or wiped out their leadership, or otherwise struck a crippling blow.
That's what makes our wars halfass, and lesser countries no longer fear our punishment! We have our foot on their neck, but don't step down!
+6 # Guest 2010-09-11 16:08
Bin Laden could be anywhere. The cave story was another convenient cover story with no evidence like so much of the narrative which as been accepted as fact. Obama inherited a false history impossible to rewrite or correct. What would Americans do if they realized how much they had lost for a grand fiction. How long can we exist separated from reality?
+5 # Guest 2010-09-11 17:05
Americans are already mad as hell, maybe that would be the One More Feather that pushed Americans into ACTION, rather than debate?
However, revolution isn't as glorious as in all the movies...Even the poorest Americans still have a Comfort Level well above...well, MOST the population of lesser countries, and as long as we have something to lose, we will continue trying to fix it from WITHIN the System!
+6 # Guest 2010-09-11 16:25
We have been swimming in a sea of lies so long we have forgotten what it is like to walk on solid land. Koppel played his part and now he's dealing only with a small part of this tragic tale....the lack of legitimacy for military actions against innocent people which continue as propaganda machines churn out more false justifications. Colin Powell, Ted Koppel...who will be next to spin another partial admission of just the part which cannot be denied years after the fact. Condi, where's your piece blaming everyone but yourself for the mess you made? George?
+3 # Guest 2010-09-11 20:43
You are not alone. For reasons too numerous to mention, the official version of 9/11 is increasingly becoming realized as a fraud. Under NO circumstance could their version be reenacted under controlled conditions producing the same results as were seen. And for those who doubt, at great cost of course, duplicate structures and a duplicate scenario could be played out in one of our deserts. You can bet the farm that the outcome would prove the official version to be a lie, which is why such tests will never likely be done. Ironically, the truth would be worth every penny.
+1 # Guest 2010-09-11 16:10
1. Many of the "hijacker" patsies have been interviewed after 9/11 and, rather than being "radical moslems" were known to eat pork, wear jewelry and gamble.
2. There was no organized "al Qaeda" until after we invaded Iraq - it's a term the CIA made up.
3. The CIA has ALWAYS known where their bin Laden operative is.
4. Bush's "pet goat" reading class: "Drone" "must" "hit "steel"
5. Explosions reported before plane hit tower.
6. All 3 towers identified as controlled demolitions (explosives set well in advance) on first day (9/11/01), then edited to fit official story.
7. The hole at Shanksville was an abandoned mineshaft, with no identifiable aircraft wreckage around it (wreckage was found miles away).
8. The 'hole' at the Pentagon is on the 2nd floor; the hole on the ground floor was wide enough for a missile.

--Need I continue? There are hundreds more observable discrepancies, all well documented.

Sorry, but saying it was ALL an inside job, trivializes it and the pain felt by family and friends of the victims. I hold Truthers and Birthers as pretty much the same Level: That of the kooks who think our moon landing was faked!
I believe it WAS allowed to happen to stir up American bloodlust for revenge, the same way Roosevelt ALLOWED Pearl Harbor to happen, and even clustered up the planes to make a more convenient target!
They just didn't count on the new "multiculturali sm", "Tolerance" and/or Apathy watering down the public's response so much.
And look at the "sacrifice" difference: Drafting and rationing in WWII, while the most "sacrificing" Americans did during Desert Storm is buying patriotic merchandise, rather than the cheaper solid-color ones!
And yes, Al-Queda is a name for all the terrorist organizations, much as we refer to "The Mob", rather than the Italian, Chinese, Russian, Mexican, etc. mafias separately! It's a convenience, nothing more!

Ted Koppel supports Israel in everfy way he can. Israel want the US to stay in Iraq and Afhanistan as long as possible. Israel want the US to attack or threaten to attack Iran. Koppel will go along with all of this.
+7 # Guest 2010-09-11 17:34
Mr. Koppel.. You say in your article "The Bush administration convinced itself (that) ....the minds that conspired to turn passenger jets into ...missiles, etc." I AM SHOCKED AT YOUR NAIVETE, MR. KOPPEL. Paul O'Neil's (former Secy of the Treasury) early revelations clearly show that the Bush-Cheney group from the get go after they took office were talking about a war in Iraq (very first cabinet meeting) to seize their oil. Contrary to your belated conversion to reality, that group insidiously welcomed 9/11 as the opportunity to not only get their hands on the world's oil supply but to use the fear they could gin up in the American people to deconstruct our constitution, humble the opposition party, and launch the country into a perpetual wars as a means to establish an authoritarian state.
+4 # Guest 2010-09-11 18:07
Ted did a show one night on the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) which any truly informed person knows is the real reason we are in Iraq and Afghanistan; it was never about Saddam or Osama Bin Laden. Ted never connected for his viewers, the PNAC to the reasons we were going to war though......... perhaps he was told not to. Perhaps it was all the money the network paid him every year that caused him to stand idly by while the nation was lied to. I have the same sentiments for Rather and Brokaw and all the rest of the paid stooges who betrayed their country.
+5 # RICHARDKANEpa 2010-09-11 18:41
I would like to thank Ted Koppel for his insight. However almost all Americans think that the US is the only one opposing al Qaeda, except for the countries that add troops to supplement US forces in Afghanistan. Google, France declares war against al Qaeda. So far France had won its skirmish despite threats of a massive attack on France. Dr. Fadl” or “Sayyid al-Sharif has systematically challenged al Qaeda’s ideas. On the anniversary of the Madrid backpack bombing Spanish clerics condemned bin Laden as a heretic.

Let’s honor what others have done and stop believing that Islam is the enemy and Ted Koppel has proved is for bin Laden helping him in his dream of a totally religiously divided world.

This editorial is a message in a bottle.

Koppel (who is a member of the CFR) is telling us that certain factions of our ruling elites are not happy with the movement toward fascism that this country is exhibiting as a result of certain other elites' actions.

+4 # Guest 2010-09-11 20:52
All Ted Koppel’s article is is some damage control while repeating the very same lies:
*The US blundered into the 9/11 snare.
*The Bush crew later decided to attack Iraq through fear that their (non-existent) WMDs would reach (non-existent) Al Qa’eda and thence hit America.
*Thousands of US soldiers would occupy Iraq for years “to protect Iraq from Iran”.
*The US colonial war in Afghanistan is motivated by fear of Pakistan’s nukes.
*Bin Laden launched “his 9/11 operation”
*Bin Laden (not the Pentagon and the PNAC and Israel) is “our enemy”.
Ted Koppel hasn’t changed - he is just trying (and managing!) to widen his audience. For actual truth, I would suggest instead reproducing John Pilger’s article “Flying the flag, faking the news”, Page 22.
+4 # Guest 2010-09-11 23:37
Had Bush's response been designed to be retaliatory against the aggressors responsible for 9-11, I doubt anyone would have objected to it. But we all know there was a playbook created by the neocons well before the event even happened, and that the real grail is and always has been oil. The real shame is watching helplessly as the Obama administration plays out the original game, while paying lip service to all peace efforts. Eventually, those who have been duped will polarize on one side or another, and each faction will take on a life of its own, fueled by yellow journalism, over spin, and hate email. Our only defense is to strengthen our powers of critical thinking, but with our focus shifting away from funding higher education, one wonders where our children are going to get this training.
+5 # Guest 2010-09-12 04:40
A tragedy, think about it, is that too few would even know what the phrase "powers of critical thinking" actually mean. I swear, the students I'm dealing with these days are amazing. Over half the last class in rhetorical analysis failed the course! I didn't even realize that the subject was thought of as difficult!
+4 # Guest 2010-09-12 08:57
Well said Mr. Koppel. The most effective attack possibly in modern history...
+3 # Guest 2010-09-12 18:22
Runyan (and other "truthers"):
"endlessly repeated" is not the same as "well documented."

As for Koppel's claim that "the political climate of the moment overcame whatever flaccid opposition there was to invading Iraq" -- they were the largest worldwide anti-war protests in history. Was he too busy helping his colleagues speculate about Saddam's fictional WMDs to notice?
+2 # Guest 2010-09-12 23:40
How quickly I have forgotten Texan 4 Peace. We are losing our history as we speak when what is happening right now can be so "disappeared" from the media and thus from the public. The political "climate of the moment" was not revealed by Koppel or the media, rather, a fiction of the political climate was perpetrated in order to justify actions the government was hell bent on taking whether we liked it or not. To this day, Koppel is NOT revealing that the enemy isn't just who we were told was the enemy, but the tellers themselves. Corporate media lies on behalf of it's sponsors. It does not act on our best interests but on those who are paying the freight. The media's job is to properly package and deliver the "official version"...NOT to question the prevailing wisdom, which is exactly what the classical journalism is supposed to do. Ted Koppel is a shill.
+2 # Guest 2010-09-13 09:05
It's an old trick, isn't it, often used by the canny? To direct attention towards that which is less deserving, so as to take the heat off the worst offenders. IMO, Wall Street, among others on home soil, is far more dangerous and threatening than Bin Laden, and equally unregulated. It isn't sure that Bin Laden is still alive, anyway, many don't think so. Whether he is, or not, has little significance. His name will be used to frighten and control people in the West, whether he is dead or alive.
+1 # Guest 2010-09-13 14:28
Koppel is no different from our government; not a word about why we were attacked: our neglect of the Palestinians, and our military presence in Arab nations run by aristocracies beholden to no one but themselves, people who control the oil wealth with no regard for the needs or political desires of their own constituencies. It's time to support world-wide revolution.
+1 # Guest 2010-09-14 00:08
If only bin Laden, a known CIA asset from the 1970's, had been the only leader involved in the attacks of 9/11/2001! This is the cover story we were given.

See YouTube the real truth about the 9/11/2001 attacks. See all of the news films of eye and ear-witnesses to those events.

Then, if you can still say that bin Laden and his al-Quieda were the only people involved in putting missiles on the undersides of fuselages, flew one large jet aircraft that had NO windows on it's body, anywhere, and a blue and white circular logo near it's nose (C5A?) then you must really know something huge that we, the American people were never told.

How about the hole in the Pentagon's side in the first photographs that show NO airplane parts, NO bodies, a hole too small to fit the fuselage and wings of a Boeing 757 jet liner into?

Al-Quieda in control of a US military transport jet?
