Sure, Write Off the Occupiers

By Harry Payne

5 November 11

RALEIGH -- A guy a few feet behind me said "My daddy says they're just a bunch of n-----s showing their a---s." That was 1969 as a crowd hurried down a flight of stairs to see a civil rights demonstration in front of New Hanover High School. That day had been a long time coming.

This week as "Occupy Wall Street" events swelled in number, I have heard so many less coarse, but equally dismissive efforts to insult the messengers to obscure the message. That is an old saw. Just like, outside agitators and communists were behind the civil rights movement, flower children, dopers and draft dodgers opposed the Vietnam War and the women's movement was just a bra burning tantrum by those who really wanted to be men.

Occupy Raleigh Update

By Ann Berry

1 November 11

Activity here has been going on for a month. I’m too old and infirm to stand/sit out in cold weather, but I’ve been dropping in to keep up and show support. OR has had at least two changes of site, one involuntary from the state Capitol grounds to the surrounding sidewalk, and two incidents involving several arrests at the hands of state Capitol Police; the last was last Thursday, for supposedly blocking the public sidewalk with tables, chairs, coolers etc. There has been no violence, but OR’s welcome on state property has been at best cold.

Tonight (Tuesday 11/01) the Raleigh City Council is to hear a petition for continuing use of some city-controlled and central site where shelter and food can be provided. You should be able to learn the outcome tomorrow, at the OccupyRaleigh Facebook page.
