GOP Redraws Wisconsin Electoral Map

epublicans scored a redistricting win Friday, with Wisconsin lawmakers unveiling a draft congressional map that boosts three House GOP incumbents including House Budget chief Paul Ryan.

The proposal, released Friday afternoon by GOP leaders in the state Assembly and Senate, makes modest changes to the state's eight districts but provides support to GOP Reps. Ryan, Sean Duffy and Tom Petri - crafting for each a new seat that is slightly more GOP friendly.

Republicans hold full control over both state legislative chambers and the governor's mansion, so Democrats hold little power in the redrawing of the state's congressional boundaries. The GOP-led state Legislature intends to vote on passing the maps by July 19 - ahead of an August recall election that could cost Republicans control of the state Senate.

Democrats are planning to aggressively target Ryan and Duffy.

Kenosha County Supervisor Rob Zerban, a progressive favorite, has announced plans to challenge Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and the author of the controversial Republican plan to rewrite Medicare legislation. Duffy, a former reality TV star who is widely regarded as one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country, faces a challenge from Democrat Pat Kreitlow, a former state senator and onetime TV news anchor.

In shoring up the three Republicans, the GOP plan also provides a friendlier district for Democratic Rep. Ron Kind.

In a statement, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate ripped Republicans for the new map, saying: "This is nothing but a pure, unprecedented partisan power grab. From now on, anytime any Republican claims they are fulfilling their constitutional duty when they defend this map, or they are trying to better represent Wisconsin, it's either A) a bald faced lie or B) stunning ignorance."

Republicans were dealt early setbacks in redistricting, with new maps in Illinois and California costing the GOP as many as 10 seats between the two states.

But, in June, Michigan Republicans released a draft map that would cost Democrats one seat, and North Carolina Republicans last week unveiled a blueprint last week that could imperil up to four House Democrats. your social media marketing partner

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Gerrymandering is a simple enough process. Those who draw the lines put as many Democrats together in a district that they would be almost be sure to win anyway. That means that it takes away Democrats from nearby districts making them more competitive for Republicans.

Tom DeLay was a master at this process of disenfranchisem ent. His carving up of Texas, funded with illegal corporate campaign contributions, was approved by the courts save for one district that aimed to decrease Hispanic representation.

Districts are supposed to incorporate like communities, as geographically contiguous as possible.

Another tactic is to put incumbent Democrats, who have an advantage over challengers in funding for reelection, together in the same district with other Republicans. This is almost certain to happen with Dennis Kucinich, whom Koch-Governor Kasich of Ohio and the Republican party is determined to remove from office.

I live in CA. We're as big as Southern Sudan. I want to leave the USA and become and independent nation. The GOP and southern religious leaders who can't keep their bible out of my constitution are no welcomed in this new country.

I want Vermont (with Bernie Sanders) included in my country and a few others but not Ryan Paul, Walker, Perry (the killer), and you get the gist. No anti gay, anti abortion leaders who quote THEIR bible (instead of the constitution) nor do I want anyone connected with the Koch brothers (such as Scalia/Thomas)

Independence day 8/02/2011 --- Govnor Brown -- get us out of USA and get our own banks (kick BofA out of CA - for sure)

I'm not drunk but maybe gone mad for seeing so much corruption in my USA as if it were a 3rd world nation (or going there)

Vote 2012 -- register now and get mail-in ballots if in a state with a GOP/TP gov or congress.

Or Perhaps the Politicians know they Wield Religious Fervor in Words only as their is no God? Religion of white man and others has always been dominance and Submission Game.

Is America really a democracy anymore? In Canada we have an impartial Elections Canada that redraw electorial districts. WE even vote the old way ..... by marking an X on the ballot and with every vote hand counted. When the polls close we have a result within the hour. Bush could never cheat like he did in 2000 and 2004 in Canada.

God Bless Canada for this and many more Humane Treatment of your Residents, helping them, appreciating them

Hawke 17, I know your question is rhetorical. America has become a plutocracy, a kleptocracy, a corporatocracy, a dollarocracy. The word "democracy" is only used to exploit, deceive, and placate the suckers. Political power, and even the "news," go to the highest bidder, and we know who has the bidding dough.....

Why does this corruption carry no penalty when an elected official clearly does not follow the Rule of Law, This is not 1930 when the Italian Mafia controlled these events or are these elected officials part of the Koch Mafia?

We jailed the Italian Mafia (and still do) - so what is good for the goose is good for the gander and prosecute & jail the Koch family controlled Mafia.

How about freeing the Mafia and hiring some to do kneecap jobs on the GOP?
