Trump Says Supporters Might 'Demand' That He Serve More Than Two Terms as President

By Felicia Sonmez, The Washington Post

16 June 19

resident Trump on Sunday floated the possibility of staying in office longer than two terms, suggesting in a morning tweet that his supporters might “demand that I stay longer.”

The president has previously joked about serving more than two terms, including at an event in April, when he told a crowd that he might remain in the Oval Office “at least for 10 or 14 years.”

The 22nd Amendment of the Constitution limits the presidency to two terms.

In tweets Sunday morning, Trump also voiced dissatisfaction with recent news coverage of his administration, calling both The Washington Post and the New York Times “the Enemy of the People.”

He added: “The good news is that at the end of 6 years, after America has been made GREAT again and I leave the beautiful White House (do you think the people would demand that I stay longer? KEEP AMERICA GREAT), both of these horrible papers will quickly go out of business & be forever gone!”

Last year, Trump also joked about doing away with term limits in a speech to Republican donors at his Mar-a-Lago estate in which he praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for doing so in China.

“He’s now president for life. President for life. No, he’s great,” Trump said, according to CNN. “And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot some day.”

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Why does the Wapo waste its time on a story like this. There are plenty of Obama faithful who want him back for a third term. Trump floats a lot of statements that he does not mean. Unlike most politicians, he does not control his mouth. That's why some of his supporters like him. You'd think the Wapo would understand that. No, maybe we would not think the Wapo would understand anything.

why does anybody waste time on anything Trump says or tweets since he doesn't mean any of it - after somebody tells him that he can't mean it - when he then claims he never said it. Trump, unlike other politicians, does this pretty much every day because he is totally out of his mind, ignorant, amoral, and stupid. Most other politicians are only some of those things - Trump is unique in that he checks all the boxes.

agreed -- better to ignore the mofo and get on with real business.

You don't realize that Trump not only scorns the law, not only feels he is better than the law, not only is above the law, in his mind he IS the law. Latest example: The Hatch act doesn't apply to Kellyann so he ignores it. Even the Republicans may grumble a little but let him get away with it. Even if some Obama faithful want him for a third term, he, a student and teacher of Constitutional law, would not accept. Trump pretends it's all a joke. But it's not.

Comeon RR, why do you always find a way to defend Trump? Perhaps some Obama fans wished he had a third term but it didn't come from him.
Trump is clearly saying HE wants to be President for Life. Over and over again, he expresses disdain for the Constitution and admiration for dictatorial leaders. Are you blind?

I agree. It’s nuts to give him so much attention

I hope Trump does everything he can possibly do to overturn the Constitution and declare himself dictator for life. It is exactly what we need to start the civil war and dissolution of this country into several weak sovereign nations. I want this civil war now to give life on earth a chance at survival. Otherwise, we're all dead, ALL, all life on earth.

It will be interesting to hear what his supporters say when he doesn't finish his first term.

If America still has a soul after Trump, it will assure that his subsequent "terms" are served in a prison facility.

That's what Pelosi wants. He can have as many terms as he wants.

Dogwhistle, eh? Or perhaps Hyenawhistle is more appropriate; they’d feast & futter on the corpse of the Constitution….

They are not in a position to demand anything. 2 terms is the law. They are in the minority. They will not be able to force a change in the law.

Who or what body in this country would take definitive action if they staged a little coup, or if T-Rump claimed executive privilege, or if there was a sudden landslide in his favor in the election? Our entire voting system is full of holes to the extent that neither any international watchdog agency nor Jimmy Carter, who has worked with all of them, is willing to attempt to monitor an election in this country--not because they are afraid of what they would find, but because they would mot be able to separate truth from fraud.

Who knew that an EGO could be President? Isn't it supposed to be about brains and ability?

Leaving aside the point in the article above that Chinese President Xi Jinping is smart and Trump is not, what is this stuff about the nut Republican base "might demand" Trump stay more than two terms? Doesn't the Constitution say specifically you can't do that? Why, yes it does. And what does Trump's sock puppet in the Justice Department say about that? Did the Post reporter ask?

Looks like 40% of this country is just as benighted as the man-baby. Any wonder I don't like this country anymore for what it is becoming?

Not without a ratified constitutional amendment, he won't. Unless it's at gunpoint under martial law.

This stuff keeps Trump in the news. Why doesn’t liberal media take him at his word with headlines,“Trum p to be US dictator?” Or “President to use “dirt” in election provided by foreign countries “. Etc.

The cumulative effect of Donald's outrageous outbursts, prevarication, narcissism, provocations, self-contradict ions, delusions, etc. is to lead one to believe that he is actually clinically insane.

Trump is the antithesis of good; he is evil. He would sacrifice America for the sake of his monstrous ego. He must go or the nation is doomed.
