Michigan Hotel Offering Free Stay for Women Who Travel to State to Get Abortion

Michigan hotel is opening its doors to any women traveling to the state to get an abortion.

Shelley O'Brien, manager of The Yale Hotel in Yale, Mich., said she would offer free stays to women coming to Michigan for the procedure due to new restrictive measures in other states, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"Dear sisters that live in Alabama, Ohio, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, or any of the other states that follow with similar laws restricting access, We cannot do anything about the way you are being treated in your home-state," a Facebook post from the hotel reads.

"But, if you can make it to Michigan, we will support you with several nights lodging, and transportation to and from your appointment.”

Several states mentioned in the hotel’s Facebook post approved controversial “heartbeat” abortion bills this year while Alabama passed the most stringent restriction with a near-total ban on the procedure.

O’Brien noted the small town north of Detroit is largely conservative, but was unfazed by a possible dip in business due to her public announcement.

"I have had one person call to say that he thought it was wrong," O'Brien said. "He didn’t have Facebook, but he heard about it and he wanted to let me know that he thought what we are doing is wrong. And I’ve been called a baby killer. And it’s like, 'No, I’m not killing babies in the basement. I am just giving someone a place to stay or maybe a ride.' "

She added that although Michigan has not passed nearly as strict abortion restrictions as the other states the post listed, she saw this as her opportunity to help.

“This is important. This is my line,” O’Brien told the newspaper. “There’s no coming back from this. You start taking away the right for women to control their own bodies, and we’re done for as a civilization. I can’t stop what’s happening, but I have the resources to maybe help someone in that position, and especially knowing that women are coming from other states already."

Michigan's Republican-controlled legislature last month passed a bill along party lines that bans a second-trimester abortion procedure commonly referred to as dilation and evacuation.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) has vowed to veto the bill.
