Alabama Newspaper Editor Calls for KKK to "Ride Again" to "Clean Out DC"

By Molly Olmstead, Slate

19 February 19

he editor of a small-town Alabama newspaper called for the Ku Klux Klan to “ride again” and lynch “Democrats [who] are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama” in a recent editorial, the Montgomery Advertiser reported Monday.

In the editorial published on Feb. 14, Goodloe Sutton, who inherited the Democrat-Reporter in Linden, Alabama, from his father and who has worked for the paper since the 1960s, complained of the “socialist-communist ideology [that] sounds good to the ignorant, the uneducated, and the simple-minded people.”

When asked by the Advertiser if he was really calling for the revival of the Klan, he responded, “If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out D.C., we’d all been better off.” He later added: “We’ll get the hemp ropes out, loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them. … It’s not calling for the lynchings of Americans. These are socialist-communists we’re talking about.”

When asked about his opinions on the KKK, he rejected the assertion that it was a violent hate group. “A violent organization? Well, they didn’t kill but a few people,” he said. “The Klan wasn’t violent until they needed to be.”

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

“The Klan wasn’t violent until they needed to be.”

Like that Black church bombing in the 60’s?(AL) Like the 3 Civil Rights activist that went missing in 1964? Found weeks later in an earthen damn!(MS) Or, how about when a man was chained to a pick up truck and dragged to his death? (TX) Countless more acts of terrorism by the Klan gets brushed off by the South all the time!

Truly a man after the heart of the Trump creature. When you have a president who is morally bankrupt and all the spoutings are based on profound lies and malicious hate, this is the sort of shit that crawls out from under the rock where it lay buried.

Wow. This "administration " is allowing all kinds of things to crawl out from under the rocks where they have been hiding. This appears to be one more manifestation of same, but is no less loathsome for that. He has "unmasked" himself, which is the best possible outcome for this sordid part of history.

Noticed yesterday that people were calling this racist as the information was given as "The KKK should clean out Washington." I opined that it was just as likely political but was shouted down. I figured he was talking about politicians not the citizens of DC. Still nuts, but they kept telling me racism was not a mental problem. Alabama is one of the poorest states in the country and gets much more money from the Feds than they contribute to the government. But the south continues to hate the federal government.
