Liberal Groups Move to Sue After Scott Walker Signs Bills Limiting Power of Incoming Democrat

By Daniel Strauss, Politico

wo liberal groups announced that they will take legal action in response to Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker's decision to sign legislation limiting the powers of Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers.

The One Wisconsin Institute, supported by the National Redistricting Foundation, said Friday afternoon that lawsuits would be coming after Walker signed the bills.

“This is a shameful attack on our democracy by politicians who will do anything to hold onto power,” former Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement from the National Redistricting Foundation. “After losing an election, Republicans in the state legislature are using their gerrymandered majorities and their defeated governor to ignore the will of the people. Their actions are grossly partisan, deeply undemocratic, and an attack on voting rights. They must not stand.”

Democrats have protested furiously since Republican state legislators started considering the legislation, which will restrict early voting periods in Wisconsin as well as limiting Evers' appointment power and shielding certain GOP policies from change.

Evers sounded a less combative note in his own statement.

"Today, Governor Walker chose to ignore and override the will of the people of Wisconsin," Evers said. "This will no doubt be his legacy. The people demanded a change on November 6th, and they asked us to solve problems, not pick petty, political fights."

However, Evers' political operation did also send out a fundraising email shortly after Walker signed the legislation.

"Now that the legislation is signed, we’ve got to make sure Tony has the resources to fight back," the email reads.
