US Arrests Religious Leaders, Activists at Border Protest

By Marty Graham, Reuters

11 December 18

neeling in front of riot police, 32 religious leaders and activists were arrested at the U.S. border fence in San Diego on Monday during a protest to support the Central American migrant caravan.

More than 400 demonstrators, many leaders of churches, mosques, synagogues and indigenous communities, sought a halt to detention and deportation of migrants and for the United States to welcome the caravan that arrived in Tijuana, Mexico in November.

Singing and praying, religious leaders moved forward in lines of four to six, some wearing T-shirts reading, Love Knows No Borders. They were handcuffed and led away by federal agents upon entering a restricted area in front of the fence.

As a Quaker who believes in our shared humanity...Were calling on the U.S. to respect the rights of migrants, said Joyce Ajlouny, general secretary of the American Friends Service Committee, which has run a week of actions to back migrants.

U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Theron Francisco said 31 people were arrested by Federal Protective Services for trespassing and one was arrested by Border Patrol for assaulting an agent.

The arrests marked the second confrontation with U.S. authorities since the caravan reached Tijuana. U.S. Border Patrol agents fired tear gas at migrants on Nov. 25 after they said they had stones thrown at them.

Thousands of migrants are living in crowded shelters and encampments in Tijuana after traveling from Central America to escape poverty and violence. They may have to wait weeks or months to claim asylum at the U.S. border.

Data released on Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) showed asylum claims at the U.S.-Mexico border rose 67 percent in the 2018 fiscal year from a year earlier.

U.S. immigration officials say these claims, most of which are accepted, exploit a legal loophole allowing migrants to enter the United States while they await a court hearing on their asylum case.

As the majority of these claims will not be successful when they are adjudicated by an immigration court, we need Congress to act to address these vulnerabilities, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said in a statement.

Protest leaders said President Donald Trump had portrayed the caravan as a security threat to advance his anti-immigrant agenda and further restrict migrants ability to seek asylum.

A U.S. judge in November blocked Trumps proclamation to bar migrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally from seeking asylum.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

My, my my. What a shameless attack without any reality at all.

rev -- I put in lots of reality, including Biden's astonishing ultimatum to US media to always call the charges against his actions in Ukraine a "disproven conspiracy theory." But it is not a theory. Biden, his family members, and associates were paid millions of dollars by Ukrainian oligarchs. That's real.

Here's a start list to investigate:

Trump
Biden
Graham
McConnell
Cruz
Grassley
Kavanaugh

And you know? The Earth will end before these people are ever thoroughly investigated.

And in this situation we are presently enduring, finding one Republican senator who who vote for impeachment would be so very hard. To find 4 or 5 or even more would be impossible. Mostly because Power is more important than truth, light and the Old American, supposed to be, way.

P.S. Unlike RR, Hasan provides documentation of his position, not just documentation but actual videos of Graham's switcheroo.

You are becoming a really relentless troll. I live in the state that Senator Graham is nominally supposed to represent--and that would be ALL of the citizens here, not just the few. I cannot wait to be rid of him. He must have been compromised to have taken such a turn about this despot. Either the "administration " has something on him, or they have promised him big-time--yuge, in fact. Maybe he has been told he would be given a seat on the supreme court (yes, the lower case is intentional now)?

The behavior of Graham and some other shameless Trump apologists is enough to make me wonder -- How many of these people have secret off-shore bank accounts -- accounts that are being funded by millions (billions?) in money that Russian oligarchs have plundered from their country's industries (primarily oil and gas). It has long been suspected that Trump has been running a money laundry for such people. A pro-Trump cabal of Senators bribed by Russian billionaires isn't all that far-fetched, IMHO.

opinion -- "He must have been compromised to have taken such a turn about this despot"

It is not so hard to understand. Graham is just pissed at democrats and the way they have treated Trump. You saw his anger in the Kavanaugh hearing. He thinks democrats have crossed a line of fairness and truth. On this point, I agree with Graham -- though I am reluctant to admit it openly.

On all other thins Graham is repugnant. Maybe not as bad as his predecessor, Strom Thurmond.

Your state does not have much of a record of sending decent people to congress. You guys need to organize down there and get rid of the Dixiecrats and Reagan Republicans.

I think the only reason that RSN tolerates this right wing troll is that it makes it look like liberals are magnanimous and open minded and want to "hear all sides". This is partly true. Liberals want to appear as the most fair minded and last to censor. But RSN is not a "liberal"instit ution. It is "owned" by its dues paying progressive readership. You can be sure that RR doesn't support RSN financially. His role as a troll is to drive wedges among Dem voters to ensure a Trump re-election.

Get over it folks, there is no virtue in allowing your ideological enemies to poison the well, define the terrain of discussion, and derail the project of radical social change. Most of the posts in this thread (obviously including mine) are responses to RR. So he wins again. We did not have a serious discussion on an important article in a critical source (Intercept) by a reputable journalist (Mehdi Hassan) because of RR's flame throwing. It does not make us look more noble to allow this prick to use RSN as his soapbox. We pay, he spews, damage is done

HP -- would it be correct to say you are a Biden supporter? I'm a Sanders supporter and I'm open about it. How about you? I don't believe you've ever stated where you stand.

HP -- Why don't you respond to my simple question. I think we have a right to know what position you are working from. That's really just a fair baseline in any discussion.

HP -- it is becoming likely that you are afraid to respond to my honest question. You are hiding something. Maybe you should tell us what your problem is.

You can't be an honest participant in a discussion if you hide things.

Quoting Rodion Raskolnikov:
Why did Hasan not write this about Graham a few years back

Quoting revhen 2020-01-27 10:58:
My, my my. What a shameless attack without any reality at all.

- repukes don't feel shame!

it's been drummed out of them by generations of white, racist preachers!

Rodion, and what is more shameless... everyone here will vote for Biden when he's nominated. He's on video bragging about what he did to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Trump has been impeached for just talking about it.

It's also convenient that the Senate trial coincides with the final stumping for the Iowa Caucus, and all the progressives' darlings are stuck in the hearing. But hey, Orange Man bad...

-2 # Rodion Raskolnikov 2020-01-28 15:28
I used to be worried about Biden but I don't think he can get the nomination now. But Bloomberg can. His adverts that run almost back to back on TV are really good. They make him seem like the "reasonable" alternative to the whack-jobs like Trump and Sanders. Bloomberg is going to give every one healthcare, a good paying job, and all the rest. But he never mentions how. He'll just do it.

-1 # Dennis 2020-01-29 15:52
Rodion,

I think you're right about Bloomberg if they can get to a contested DNC Convention. Bloomberg will bribe his way onto the ticket.

Still, I think between the stupor-delegate s and the proportional delegates model, Biden will have it wrapped up after Super Tuesday. It's sad to think that people will rally around Biden or Bloomberg, but it is what it is...

Great video montage -- first rate! One more Graham quote that gives me some hope:
"If we nominate Trump we will get destroyed ...
and we will deserve it." Lindsey Graham,
Republican Senator, 05/03/2016.

I'm hoping that if Republican senators fail to vote to remove Trump from office, their party will be FINISHED. For in that case, the old GOP will have morphed completely into the Cult of Trump. The party of Honest Abe Lincoln will have become the cult of a con-artist. Sensible people should abandon this cult by the millions.

Don't forget folks that many Trump supporters are opting for their money and their race (white). In reality they are making a moral decision putting their assets above their principles. This is a very dangerous path to trod and may end with the downfall of our democratic republic. Trump represents disunion and moral decay. It is not a hopeful future we have before us.

All of this is why I call him Flimsy Graham.
