Willie Nelson Speaks Out on Immigrant Family Separations at Border

By Joseph Hudak, Rolling Stone

15 June 18

"Christians everywhere should be up in arms," says the country music legend of stripping children from their parents

illie Nelson has issued a statement on the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. The country-music icon and Texas native ripped the Department of Justice's policy under President Trump, calling it "outrageous."

"What's going on at our southern border is outrageous. Christians everywhere should be up in arms. What happened to 'Bring us your tired and weak and we will make them strong?' This is still the promise land," Nelson says, citing lyrics from songwriter David Lynn Jones' "Living in the Promiseland," which Nelson cut for his 1986 album The Promiseland.

Nelson, who grew up about five hours from the Mexican border in Abbott, Texas, has never been shy about championing social causes. In 2013, he expressed his support for gay marriage, telling Texas Monthly, "It's ridiculous to me that this is something we're having a conversation about in this day and age." An outspoken proponent for environmental awareness and the legalization of marjiuana, he launched his own "green fuel" company BioWillie in 2007, and in 2015 started his Willie's Reserve cannabis company.

The issue of immigrant children crossing the Mexico-Texas border is not a new concern of Nelson's. In 2014, he talked to Rolling Stone about the issue. "I've been watching, and the only thing we can do is take care of those kids, whatever it takes. They're scared. They're being mistreated. And it's not a good way to start off your life. But it's a good opportunity for us to show a little bit of humanitarianism and take care of those kids. I know a lot of people want to send them back. I guess the closer you are to the situation, the more extreme emotions you have about it, but it seems to me the old golden rule, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,' or 'treat other people like you want to be treated' … Treat those kids like they were your kids."

In May, the Trump administration instituted a zero-tolerance policy that called for all immigrants crossing the border illegally to be prosecuted. Because minors cannot be held in criminal custody, close to 500 children have been separated from their parents since the policy was enacted. On Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the separation of children from their parents while addressing law enforcement officers in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Tonight, the organization Families Belong Together will hold a series of rallies to protest the policy in cities around the U.S., including Nelson's part-time home of Austin, Texas. your social media marketing partner

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

I keep thinking I've seen already the ultimate in sadism and crimes against humanity locally by Trump. But, this policy of wrecking childrens' lives for Sessions requires some seriously violent insurgencies by We the people against our congress killers / representative / senators, and time to attack people creating and enforcing these administration' s atrocities, including ICE and Border Patrol, all existentially threatening inhumane warlocks, and enemies of the people now, and in fact all life on earth.

Thi report says that 500 children have been taken (stolen, kidnapped, confiscated) while many other reports are saying 10,000. Our idiot-n-chief says it is the Democrats law that we confiscate children when it is republican/Trum p policy. What kind of people are we. Do we really think this isn't cruel and unusual punishment. Or how about all of Trump's spewing about MS-13 gangs. Don't they realize that warehousing and tasering thousands of children will create gangs? Let's hope we don't turn into a full fledged Nazi Germany.

Nazi Germany? Those pikers? What a bunch of amateurs they were. We're so far beyond them!

Amen, Willie. Anyone claiming to be a Christian or for that matter, an adherent of any religion, who can condone this horrible administration' s actions. is an abomination deserving of no credibility from anyone. Sessions is a complete fool as well as a racist sucking up to Trump in hopes he doesn't get fired. Sanders is even dumber than her father and most likely will be gone shortly. We have never had a administration spokesperson who is so willing to obviously lie in public and making derisive comments to and about the reporters who call her out. The end of this train wreck of an administration cannot come too soon.

But.. but.. Sarah Sanders and Jeff Sessions, whom we are assured are Good Christians, have quoted us scripture justifying the practice.
+21 # Texas Aggie 2018-06-15 14:32
Actually Sarah didn't quote scripture because she doesn't know any. She just assured us that somewhere in the Bible there were passages that mandated doing what they were doing. The scripture that the warped elf quoted is the same one that was used to justify slavery. Are you surprised?

These self-righteous people (?) like the Bible so much let's throw it back at them. Matthew 25:31-46

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

I'm a devout Unitarian Universalist--n ot entirely Christian or any other, but I do admire the caring aspects of all faiths and I started collecting social justice verses out of the Christian Bible when I was a Methodist teenager, which VASTLY outnumber the nauseating ones like Elisha siccing a bear on little children who made fun of him.

So I say "AMEN!" to you, Rofo, for sending around that excellent verse. There are so many more in the Bible, plus all the humane wisdom in the Qu'ran, Upanishads, Tao te Ching, etc. and the loving deeds religions have inspired. The Bible verse I try to live by is Jewish, Micah 6:8. It reads (in the New International translation): "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Can you imagine Drumpf or any of his minions doing ANY of those?

Willie has the right perspective:

Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You

This simple rule is the key to a good and uncomplicated life.

"In May, the Trump administration instituted a zero-tolerance policy that called for all immigrants crossing the border illegally to be prosecuted."

As Sasha Pyle mentioned above, most of these people are NOT entering illegally. They are requesting asylum which makes them totally and completely legal under both international and US law. That the drumpfbots don't believe in following the law is irrelevant. These people are entirely legal, and the goons and thugs kidnapping their children need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and if any kid dies, they need to face federal murder charges which carry the death penalty.

This has to be stopped and by spontaneous direct action by the public. How to storm the facilities without the kids getting hurt?

And you don't have to be a Christian. This is a violation of the most basic humane axiom: preserve the children. And by implication, it threatens the survival of the human race, because the children are its future. Crimes against humanity? Crimes against species survival, along with climate-trashin g and nukes. Throw the bastards out!!

Did you say "tasering children"??!! Tell me you didn't.

If this doesn't stop, we need to get ALL THE CONGRESSPEOPLE who are not just going along with this goon of a "president" but all those who haven't been yelling their heads off in opposition to him in a room and impeach them all immediately and start over.

I just changed my voicemail message to say: Good day- Heil Hitler! Are your children safe at home or in a concentration camp on the border? Please leave a message.
